10 cloverfield lane: Absolutely great! My kind of movie ^_^ The only thing I hated about it was that I have to wait and see if there will be more Sad

I absolutely love cloverfield too, but that had the wonky camera thing, the clumsy actors and some questionable decisions. This one on the other hand does everything it touched perfectly. Perfect runtime, suspense, character outline..

Avalon (2001) - 6.5/10

(Note: I had watched half of it before.)

The Japanese writer, director and composer of Ghost in the Shell decide to team up and make a live action movie with a premise about VR, shot in Poland (at least partly for budgetary reasons) with a Polish cast and a half Japanese, half Polish crew (the supervisors appear to be Japanese, the actual filming crew were Polish). Certainly an unusual production.

The film is probably the closest to "live action anime" you can get (Speed Racer comes second). Despite the B movie budget the cinematography (by a Polish DP) manages to look straight from Oshii's anime works and impresses. Art direction and visual effects are also surprisingly strong.

The script, translated from Japanese to Polish and from Polish to the English subtitles I used is as ambiguous and open ended as it can get. The dialogues are few, the actors are not the best and the movie moves slow.. it can test your patience.

Ultimately, you feel an amount of detachment from the movie (not unlike how a seasoned Avalon player would feel about the real world...) and that's not good, but the movie remains interesting enough to finish it and think about it..

Zootopia web-dl? Where? Surprised

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Yeah I mentioned it's the same composer, just not his name. Not everything was memorable but his Aria was great and a couple of other tracks too.

Assault Girls - 3/10

Mamoru Oshii decides to revisit the idea behind Avalon in this 2009 pseudo-sequel. I didn't even know it was connected to Avalon when I started watching this. The connection is revealed in the 5 minute (or so) dreadful narration that opens the movie.

And here begins the trouble:
- The movie lasts only about an hour and has barely any plot. Kazunori Itō did not return as screenwriter and Oshii wrote the script.
- It was filmed with a Japanese cast and crew with considerably lower budget than Avalon; something like $1M vs $8M.
- That didn't stop them from putting several CGI sequences of poor quality in it.
- Cinematography and production values (costumes aside which are great) are of "youtube" productions quality.
- The cast is Japanese but speak the vast majority of their lines in English. Most if not all of them you can tell they don't know any English at all - they just learned their lines phonetically and deliver them in cringe inducing ways..

On the very few positives: Kenji Kawai returns as composer and delivers the goods. With his powerful music the trademark meditative montages of Oshii's almost work (but not quite).

Ah, indeed, you did. Must have missed it. I agree, not every track stands out, but there's a couple I often return to.

Ninja Scroll - 5.5/10

Handdrawn anime is the best anime but the plot of this one is incomprehensible and some of the fights finished too quick and unimpressively.

Loved every minute of it, and this is coming from someone who was mighty unimpressed with everything Tarantino did since Pulp Fiction.

Look Who's Back (Er ist wieder da) (2015)

8/10

It was a great satirical film, however, English subtitles sucked (Er.Ist.Wieder.Da.2015.720p.BluRay.x264-iLLUSiON release)...Afaik it was acquired by Netflix, April 9th release.

Hateful Eight 8.5/10. I wasn't expecting it to be very good since i've read so many negative comments about it, but it really liked it, one of his better movies for sure.

Not boring, but they squeezed so much into that to prepare for next movies it was chaotic. Screenplay was shitty but at least CGI was entertaining.

The highlight for me were Batman melee fights. Would love to see a movie about him.

The Doomsderp CGI was abysmal.

Private Resort (1985) - 7/10

Titties, ass, and spandex in spades! Basically an homage to Porkies, with more cheesy lines and wooden acting than you knew you could take! Sure it was a formulaic 80's summer comedy........but that didn't stop me from loving every second of it.......(the titties helped a lot in that regard though! Very Happy )

Ahh, Ninja Scroll. I liked it pretty much at the time I watched it ~8 years ago. Can't remember which is which - the movie and the series - but i remember it being nicely choreographed and properly brutal Wink

10 Cloverfield Lane. I really liked Cloverfield, this one, not so much. The thriller part is just not that interesting and it was very predictable (i read absolutely nothing about the movie to get the best experience, yet i was never surprised). 6.5/10

Gonna watch War of the Worlds now i think (4th time or something), much better..

I liked Cloverfield too. I imagined that this one had a connection with Cloverfield but watched it without any other info. The 3/4 of the movie were quite decent from a human behaviour/psychology point of view but the final act was just ridiculous. My score is 5/10.
