Like the "HD" consoles than ran many games at sub-720p?
Marketing will justify the 4K as "your movies are 4K and all games are automatically upscaled to 4K so it's a 4K machine".
MishkiN wrote: | Regardless of whether this is an April fool's joke or not, it's admittance that the "next gen" console was actually built with last gen components and it's dating badly. Embarrassing either way. |
VR is the cause. Otherwise the PS4 is still doing fine.
Stormwolf wrote: | One thing is for sure, i'm glad as fuck that i didn't buy a ps4 yet. Wonder how the regular edition will be priced after this. My bet is a small reduction and an outrageous price for the new one. |
The price is in the OP no need to bet.
Ampee wrote: | Well...They already adapted the audience in some way. Remember HD remaster? (Last of us, uncharted etc.)
Now You get a console which can remaster the games you already bought for your ps4. isn't that just 2017ish?
but yeah fuck you sony. I dont want to buy a new console every week. |
You might want to re-read the OP where I have written this won't happen. |
Im certain that the new ps4 will gladly upscale the original ps4 games to 4K resoultion. Just like what they did with the HD remasters. Mostly its just AR fix and higher res (okay there are a few exepctions.)

Reminds me of both the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3, both of which came with high end DVD/BR players at a time where they were brand new - exorbitantly expensive - technology. |
I always heard the players in Playstation were inferior to regular players. Probably just rumors though.

Exact opposite actually, the DVD and BR players were considered to be top-class at the time.

I have no idea about the PS2 DVD player but the PS3 BR, definitely. I remember discs with super demanding menus like in Terminator 2: Skynet Edition would make several BR players crap out and the safe buying advice was "just buy a PS3".

New info: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/sources-the-upgraded-playstation-4-is-codenamed-ne/1100-5437/
- Internal codename: NEO (I guess complimenting the "Morpheus" codename of PSVR)
- Specs:
Quote: | PS4 CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz
PS4K CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
PS4 GPU: AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz
PS4K GPU: Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz
PS4 RAM: 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s
PS4K RAM: 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s |
- Starting this October all new PS4 games *must* ship with support for NEO/PS4.5/PS4K.
- Expect better framerates and image quality. Also an additional 512MB is allocated to the games' available memory budget.
- 4K is not a requirement (no duh..), nor does Sony insist on what aspects of visuals developers should improve. They have only one condition: framerate at the very worst should be identical to the same game running on the PS4.
- PS4K exclusives are forbidden. All games must run on both machines. This includes PSVR titles.
- Sony *explicitly and repeatedly* forbid any developer to offer exclusive gameplay features and unlockables on the PS4K version. PS4K games will be available from the same store, have the same modes, the same online community and so on.

Looks like the New 3DS approach so it's more plausible... Still it's like upgrading a PC, which defeats the console purpose.

The worst part of this is that it will sell quite well. To the same dickheads that go "lolol omg must upgrade $2000 PC every year". And yet, I dare say that even at "just" €400 (I'm just going to assume they put it where the PS4 started), that's about as much as most PC gamers spend in 3 years too.
I'm all for Sony doing this, because it means we're not going to be stuck with crap as long as we were with the PS360, but it still annoys me.
Oh well...anyone want to buy a PS4?

The purpose of consoles, as i see it, is something that just works, no fiddling with drivers or .ini files, no wait for "now supports hardware X" and just overall far less manual work.
I think it's great.. Upgraded consoles will in the end mean overall better graphics for a lot of new PC games as well.

That's why I'm eager for it to happen. I hope it makes the 2nd hand PS4 prices drop like stones so I'd pick one up for a few exclusives (not sure which ones that would be but eh I'm sure there are a few).

Nowadays you leech games on steam and usually they work OOB, and most of them have less and less settings and usually auto scales automatically to your configuration.
That being said I agree it's still not as simple as consoles but it's definitely easier to pop a PC game than good old DOS era with emm386 and dos4gw

Sorry cyclone, but you're making this sound so much more complex than it has ever been
Windows 7 already installed drivers automatically. They're not the most up to date drivers though, so it's still recommended to install the latest Nvidia or AMD drivers by hand. Ini fiddling is still necessary as much as ever in many games, exactly because they don't expose enough graphic settings. "Automatic scaling" is not new, Crysis already did that back in 2007 too. Games have worked "OOB" for ages as well, aside from the ini fiddling. I'm not sure what you're on about

When was the ini fiddling necessary? I dont remember that time. The way I see it, the moment you start "fiddling" with anything on a PC you have already left console standards behind you. The standard where you blindly (or out of necessity) accept the developers choices. Same with the "constant upgrading". Noone forces you. Its YOU who thinks you dont want live by yesterdays standards anymore.
If you want a "console" for pc games, get a pc, play everything OOB and you're done. The "getting pc" thing is the only deciding difference I see here, because you can fuck that up royally.

I was talking about Windows 10 because we are in 2016 and it's the current Windows version. I do know it's been the case already with Windows 7.
That being said, I never much tweaked ini, but I always spend (spent ?) ages in menus to get the best FPS without sacrificing many details.
I also do know that games settings always scale by default on PC for ages, but I experienced many games were they would just put either LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH and sometimes would switch abusively to LOW while you could get better details and just lose 5 fps with some details set to HIGH and not everything on LOW.
These days, I did notice, maybe I was lucky or something, that usually every GFX setting was set quite well for my computer, and it wasn't just "everything LOW or everything HIGH".
Like some silly games that set everything to low except AA, while when you disable AA then you can actually set everything to high
That's what I meant, and nowadays MOST games (not only Crysis) scale up much better than in the past without spending ages in the settings.
That being said, I eventually fiddle with game settings because there is always some details/settings that you'd still set to ULTRA even if you lose a few FPS..
At least on console, you can't do that, so you aren't even tempted to do that
Although lately some console games like Doom or The Division allows you to disable a few effets like motion blur or chromatic aberration, but it doesn't impact FPS (most likely why they allowed this).

In other news, remember all the bullshit by some people here on the forum about Sony's impending financial doom? I said it then, the gaming division wasn't where the losses were and with them spinning off their shitty divisions they'd bounce right back.
Well: http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2016/04/ps4-sales-sony-full-year-profit/
They made a profit again. And how: last year a $1.16b loss, now $1.36b profit. $13.7b in gaming revenue ($785m operating income), of that PSN alone is good for $4.9b in revenue; for comparison, Nintendo as a whole "only" made $4.6b in revenue.
Camera sensors are down by a whole fucking billion from last year ($253m loss as opposed to $822m profit last year), as are smartphones ($544m loss), and still the gaming division makes up for all of it. If the sensors turn around again (they were hit by natural disaster last year and demand dropped, so it's likely that this will bounce back) the only losing part will still be the smartphones.
