Whoa there! Laughing

Well shit, horizontal fov is 200º:
wikipedia wrote:
The approximate field of view of an individual human eye (measured from the fixation point, i.e., the point at which one's gaze is directed) is 60° superior (up), 60° nasal (towards the nose), 70-75° inferior (down), and 100-110° temporal (away from the nose and towards the temple).[6][7][8] For both eyes the combined visual field is 130-135° vertical and 200° horizontal.[9][10] When viewed at large angles, the iris and pupil appear to be rotated toward the viewer. As a result the pupil may still be visible at angles greater than 90°.[11][12][13]

About 12–15° temporal and 1.5° below the horizontal is the optic nerve or blind spot which is roughly 7.5° high and 5.5° wide.
Surprised

So 120° less (horizontal) than what would be considered optimal.

Meh, probably gonna order it anyways just to demo it and possibly keep it if i feel its no big deal. When i had the DK2 this was the biggest issue i had with it to be honest, I really had hoped for a wider FOV than before.. Would not surprise me at all if CV2 comes sooner than expected though.

I do think it's really cheap of Oculus to keep their customers in the dark about this, that makes me suspicious and it makes it harder to take them seriously. This is not good marketing.

I'm not if it was to do with ipd but I also remember blurring when looking off center (DK2) so it was like you had to move your head more than you would have wanted for clarity..

There have been a lot of changes between dk2 and cv1 so hopefully that's ironed out with the new lenses. My guess these custom screens are still flat as well, I would presume curved would be more desirable I.e keeping distance between lens and screen uniform.. Bah looking forward to my vive.

So basically inferior screens, less FOV - but costs more money?

Nice. Welcome to the New World.

Inferior screens? Compared to exactly what? The screens are far superior to what we had in DK2, the FOV is not.

The screens could be 8000x2800 - it means precisely fuck all if the FOV means you're looking through a slit.

Well yes, i think we kind of agree there, but the issue here is the FOV and not the resolution.

Hardware isn't ready though: add 40 degrees to the fov and double the resolution then try run that at 90 fps x2 Laughing

That's why no resolution hike, just look at star citizen at 1080p

yeah, i get that the resolution is what it is, but would have preferred a wider FOV.

Now I'm seriously thinking about canceling my preorder for the rift. The whole fov shit has put me off. I seriously suspect the demo units somehow had a bigger fov than the retail units, because no reviewers and people who tried the demo units have complained about the fov.

There seems to be no mayor upgrade to the dk2. I don't know wtf they where thinking keeping the fov almost the same as the dk2. I'll keep my dk2 until the cv2 or vive2 launches.

Out for all the reviews I have read, none picked up on the FOV being narrow.

Hopefully we'll get some solid figures soon. Mmm

Or maybe just maybe, there is nothing wrong with the fov. Maybe moste of those who complain are looking at numbers and have not actually tested the cv1 like the reviewers have.

I'm not even sure how FOV would be calculated for something which is stereo and with manual control over how wide you want it to be (IPD).

I did read a few posts yesterday from people who tried CV1 and had the DK2 for many months and it seems to them this was not noticeable or that it was better.

EDIT. Found this posted now..:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4chxes/my_experience_with_cv1_after_a_full_day_i_love_it/

FOV: This is the most confusing issue when I see people complaining that the FOV is significantly smaller than the DK2’s. That is definitely not the case in real usage. I would say that, having just tried the DK2 again recently, the FOV in the CV1 is slightly better than that of the DK2. I can’t compare to the Vive yet, obviously.

Oculus dude explains FOV:

One thing i absolutely do not like: fabric, both on inside and on the outside. That's idiotic. Is Vive like that too?

Would you buy one second hand and feel comfortable wearing that?

It will get very dirty, both inside and outside.. Fabric also has a tendency to bleach, get stains, tearing etc.. i bet after 1 year it will look quite disgusting and might be hard to sell for a decent price.

They don't expect you to keep them for very long - Apple (and to be fair, most makers of high-end expensive consumable products) do this deliberately so the new shiny thing doesn't stay new and shiny - thus forcing a purchase of a new shiny, and making the old one less attractive to sell on.

Typical marketeers at work again. I bet the manufacturing process for the fabric costs more than simple rubber molding too.

What does apple make that is made in fabric? If its exchangeable and more comfortable than rubber, then it's ok.. But yes the price is most probably a huge rip-off..

Oculus calls it transformo-fabric and they invented it specifically for the Rift. They are very proud of it. Reaction

I guess most of their research went into making the Rift look fancy.

I'm speaking generally. You don't think Apple make their phones all shiny and glossy and smooth for functionality? The slightest mark on an iPhone shows up really badly, the metal backing scratches with the slightest touch and somehow the glass on the front is more fragile than the most delicate of chandeliers.

Compare that to the very first iPhone, it was quite sturdy, made of durable plastic, with a tough glass screen - I know as I still have one (never used obviously)

Now, all flagship phones are made of the most delicate materials you can imagine, all to make it look blingy, with much lower appeal to sell on at the end of a contract.

To my mind, a good phone would have a good hard, slightly textured backing to ensure it didn't slip, a tough glass screen with edge protection, and some sort of rubber in there somewhere to help absorb bangs and drops.

But you'll never find that in a Galaxy S7 or an iPhone 7.

Yeah i guess it depends on font size. Elite seems much better, e.g:

"I played elite in my cv1 for a few hours last night. Text legibility is one of the biggest differences over the dk2."

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4ceab2/cv1_day_1_random_thoughts/

I've read about 12-15 impressions from people by now and so far everyone has been very positive and have said it's a really huge upgrade from DK2. I was quite happy with the DK2, what was lacking was how cumbersome everything was (interface wise), which seems fixed now.

From your reddit link:
Quote:
I'm running close to the minimum specs (gtx 970, overclocked 2500k, 8gb ram) and the performance has been great in all the apps I've tried so far, even Elite: Dangerous which didn't run all that great on the DK2 when I last played (which was a while ago).

This was the only thing I was worried about, makes me feel better. Same specs as mine other than have 16g ram. Was worried 970 + OC 2500k would be borderline crappy.
