The fact is, you don't really need a good script to make a good, or at least well received superhero flick. Deadpool is the perfect example of that. You do need an idea and understanding of the character you're trying to portray. iMO, that's why Marvel movies do so well too, despite the fact that most of them are simple and unoriginal - they do capture the spirit of marvel's setting.

I'd love to see movies like "Dark Knight" - ones that can stand on their own as movies, not just superhero movies. But whether the general public wants the same and praises it above simple flicks dominating box office right now - that's debatable.

I disagree about Deadpool. Writing comedy is the hardest of them all, and the fact that Deadpool was good says a lot about the writing team. I think you mean that the plot was not complex, but that was not the point of Deadpool anyway. On the other hand, of course the public praises films like The Dark Knight. Knight is #4 of Top 250 on imdb. In order to get there, and remain for so long, it requires more than just the comic book fanboys that rate any shit related to comics 10/10. That is the brilliance of the Nolan trilogy, even non-comic book fans can enjoy them for the great films that they are.

Yeah, I suppose you're right about DK. I agree, these are among the few comic book movies enjoyed by a broader audience. I disagree about DP, though, I didn't really find it to be a good comedy, or a movie overall - it was decent, but that's all. I've had a few laughs, but i felt bored half way through the movie and it seemed like the jokes were funny almost as often as they were forced and cheap. Aside from the r-rated stuff and deadpooly, adult jokes, it didn't really make a better impression on me than any random MCU flick.

Fatman vs. Pecs of Steel : The dawn of Christ - 6/10

I expected nothing and was really entertained. Of course the movie cannot be taken seriously and certainly must fail in comparison to Nolans Batman. The film pushes the judeo-christian mythology to the point where it turns to Freud for its genesis. With a little distance and a healthy cup of irony, this movie is, in some aspects, better than the marvel movies combined. I would not even compare them though.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

It's funny, this movie could have easily been better than the marvel movies that DC is so desperately chasing.
However they're rushing so much to blow their justice league load that they couldn't tell a story properly if their life depended on it and this movie is so messily stitched together that it hurts it, bad. Wonder who's to blame, writers, editor, director, all of them? Also, the way they try to lay ground for anyone other than the big three was really clumsy (dat folder with the icons, dafuq? Laughing)

Another issue that I could see some people having is that this is really not batman and really not superman, I'd say that these are elseworld versions at best, but it's not that much of a big deal to me personally. Performances were a mixed bag, but most were pretty weak/average at best:
- Lex luther was just chewing scenery left and right, some people were comparing him to the joker and I kind of agree
- Cavill was painfully dull and forgettable, which kind of makes him the worst actor in here for me
- Gadot was passable (keeping the accent was a mistake IMO and all the BS about the smirk scene, pls... but at least with that she tried to do something with the character, which is more than can be said for superboringmen)
- Hulk--er, I mean Doomsday was a poor choice of villain for this one
- Affleck's batman and bruce wayne are easily the best part about this, can't wait for more of them along with alfred without goyer(I'm guessing terrio and affleck reworked at least some of his bits?) and snyder's taint all over it.

Gotta admit snyder does have an eye for the visual shots, but this desperately needed more than that.

 Spoiler:

6/10 for me, but taking into account "superman" and "batman" in here I can definitely understand the 5's or 4's out there.

China does not like the movie.

Fanboys on opening day rated it 8.1/10 but general audiences over the weekend rated it 6.7/10. In the end it is expected to underperform and make $50-80 million bellow initial expectations.

Well, there's no fear of not breaking even in this film.. it's just not going to make the money they expected an "event" picture to make.

Also Zimmer announced he won't score another superhero movie from now and on. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/batman_vs_superman/hans-zimmer-officially-retires-from-the-superhero-genre-a132806

http://www.latino-review.com/news/breaking-zack-snyder-has-exited-justice-league

Quote:
BREAKING: Zack Snyder Has Exited 'JUSTICE LEAGUE,' Replaced By George Miller

In an unbelievable turn of events, Warner Bros has just issued a press release announcing that Zack Snyder has exited JUSTICE LEAGUE mere days before the film is set to go before cameras. The rumor mill has been ablaze since Monday with murmurs that the studio was feeling immense pressure to alter their plans for an expanded DC Cinematic Universe due to the poor reception given to BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. With terrible reviews, a mediocre response from fans, and a front-loaded worldwide release that yielded a haul that fell well short of their internal projections, many have hinted at a sense of panic over at the Warner movie lot.

Here's a snippet of the press release, followed by some analysis on how it coincides with- and contradicts- the rumors that have been going around:

"JUSTICE LEAGUE" TO MOVE FORWARD WITH GEORGE MILLER AS DIRECTOR

(April 1, 2016 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Pictures is thrilled to announce that George Miller ("Mad Max: Fury Road") will be directing "Justice League." Following the phenomenal success of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which soared past the $500 million mark in just five days, we are well aware of the insatiable appetite of DC fans.

While Zack Snyder was attached to direct "Justice League," the visionary filmmaker has been battling fatigue due to a production schedule that has kept him on the road, away from his children, since 2013's "Man of Steel." Miller had been brought onto the production team for "Justice League" to help bring Snyder's considerable vision to life, and now it's been amicably decided upon that Miller is in a better position to bring the film to fruition. This will allow the production stay within its scheduled timeline, while providing Snyder with ample time to recharge his creative batteries.

"We are immensely excited to have George Miller taking the reins of 'Justice League,'" said Warner Bros. Pictures president Kevin Tsujihara. "Zack has been an invaluable resource to us, and we fully expect him stay on as part of our DC production team," Tsujihara added.

"It's an honor to be given this tremendous opportunity," Miller said. "It's rare that you get a second chance at this sort of thing, and I'll try my very best not to bugger it up."

There's more to the press release, but those are the pertinent parts. There's so much to digest here.

For starters, we've heard that the studio has been breathing down Snyder's neck ever since test screenings for BATMAN V SUPERMAN yielded less than optimistic responses. The prevailing thought has been that they gave Snyder lots of creative freedom, and were sorely disappointed with the director's choice to make a more for-fans-only type of film. The studio had hoped for something with a more broad, mainstream appeal. While they turned their attention towards SUICIDE SQUAD, scheduling a series of extensive reshoots reported on yesterday by Birth Movies Death, the studio is also said to have turned up the heat on Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE.

For weeks, there have been quiet rumblings that they've been breathing down Snyder's neck, and that the director was relieved to get a break from pre-production so he can go do press for BATMAN V SUPERMAN and get some time away from the suits. However, when he returned to the office on Monday for more meetings about JUSTICE LEAGUE, he was essentially ambushed by concerned executives. While the film had a strong weekend at the box office, it suffered a historic Friday to Sunday drop, very poor reviews, and middling reactions from fans.

This was not the response they'd hoped for, and they let him know this in no uncertain terms.

Over the course of the last few days the situation has only gotten worse, and it would appear that everything came to a head when the studio suggested a three month delay to allow George Miller to take a pass at the JUSTICE LEAGUE script. This wasn't the first time the studio stepped in and halted one of Snyder's productions- having infamously done this to BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE- and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. Snyder was livid, and he walked away from the production.

We've even heard that this was WB's plan, since it's easier for them to spin a story based around him leaving rather than them firing him days before a production. This is why they're going with the whole fatigue angle, which actually has somewhat of a precedent in this industry thanks to incidents like Dave Chappelle walking away from millions of dollars and a beloved TV series because he was "too exhausted and overwhelmed."

As it stands, the current plan seems to be to delay production of JUSTICE LEAGUE, give Miller all of April, May, and June to prepare, film from July to December, and still have the film ready for its November 2017 release. This is where the infrastructure created by Snyder comes in handy, as the production already has many of the tools, sets, and other shortcuts, thanks to the mechanisms created for BATMAN V SUPERMAN.

You may recall that Miller was set to direct JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL several years back, before that production was scrapped for several reasons. Eyebrows were raised last month when it was revealed that Miller was added a producer for this new JUSTICE LEAGUE. He's known as a hands-on filmmaker, who often writes and directs his own films. The idea that he'd be "just another producer" on JUSTICE LEAGUE seemed far-fetched, and now we have a clearer picture of exactly why he was brought on board.

Between this, and the rumors of SUICIDE SQUAD's overhaul, it would appear that Warner Bros is doing everything it can to get its DC franchise on track.

Still, this is a stunning turn of events. We here at Latino-Review Media will be following the story closely. Stay tuned for updates!

http://deadline.com/2016/04/batman-v-superman-box-office-second-weekend-gods-not-dead-2-1201729796/

-70% drop in the box office the second weekend, one of the largest for a comic book movie. WB justified it as "that's only because it opened so big so the fall would also be big" but the movie has no competition in the theaters, so no, what's going on is that the poor reviews and word of mouth are having an effect.

Quote:
Well, the poor reviews and mixed word of mouth are finally taking their toll on the second weekend ticket sales for Warner Bros.’ Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. This morning, BvS woke up from a hangover to learn that it’s on its way to a -70% weekend drop of $50.7M. That fall-off is one of the steepest for a superhero film, topping the -69% posted by 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. All this despite the fact that Bruce and Clark have the Friday-Sunday period all to themselves, without any new wide threats from the other majors, not to mention the added benefit of 30% K-12 schools off, and 9% of colleges on break, per ComScore. The second Friday till for BvS of $15.3M, down 81%, looks like a collapse compared to last Friday’s $81.55M which included $27.7M in previews. Even if you strip the previews out ($53.85M), BvS’ Friday-to-Friday decline is still big at -72%.

Now, these fanboy and -girl films can be heavily frontloaded. A Warner Bros. source was quick to point out the 72% drop weathered by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.1M opening, $47.4M second weekend) as well as the 69% to 70% crashes experienced by The Twilight Saga pics New Moon and both Breaking Dawns. The major difference with Deathly Hallows 2 is that it faced competition from Captain America ($65M) in its second sesh, whereas BvS doesn’t have any big rivals this weekend. Unfortunately, BvS’ drop isn’t a case of ‘the bigger it opens, the bigger it falls’: There’s been too many of the $100M-plus superhero openers to show that second weekends can sustain a -50% to -60% slide. Whether BvS hits $1 billion worldwide is still TBD, and we’ll have a better indication after international reports roll in.

edit if reshoots are indeed taking place for Suicide Squad after it had finished shooting based on either fan reaction to its trailers or complaints that BvS is humorless, you bet that even if Snyder is not shitcanned from JL1 because it has to start shooting soon that WB will step in various ways to do what they feel must be done to save it from him (while in the process also possibly making it worse lol Razz ).

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/warner-bros-mulls-releasing-films-881265

WB is said to want to release fewer films after the BvS disaster.

BvS was thought as the movie that would bring WB on the top after they lost money on Jupiter Ascending, Pan and Heart of the Sea but it's now clear BvS won't make anywhere near what they thought they would be making as critics and audiences have panned the film. (Breaking even point is $800M (if not more) and the movie is unclear if it will clear $1B).

So their decision is that from now and on they will be very careful on what they greenlit and they will be giving less films a chance; instead they will concentrate on the franchises that can potentially make them lots of money: DC Comics, Lego and Harry Potter.

WB officially responds that no such thing is happening but inside sources speak otherwise. Afterall WB's response to BvS is that it's doing amazing on the Box Office Laughing

http://variety.com/2016/film/opinion/batman-v-superman-warner-bros-superhero-suit-1201749164/

- Doesn't look like it will hit $1B.
- The big problem is WB/DC have no Kevin Feige, someone with extensive comic book knowledge who is a good producer and it's his vision that the company follows.
- The closest to Feige they have is Geoff Johns but he is doing 10 other jobs (including writing the upcoming solo Batman film) so he doesn't have time to be the Feige of DC.
- Thus Snyder has been making most creative decisions.
- Producers Jon Berg and Jeff Bewkes will take a more hands on approach now after the BvS disaster. But they too are not the Feige they should be looking for.
- Justice League should be more suited to Snyder's talents. Sources say it's a straightforward film full of action and effects so Snyder should be able to deliver some mindless pew pew.

Bloomberg: BvS to make less money than MoS

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-08/-batman-v-superman-seen-earning-less-profit-than-superman-alone

Quote:
“Batman v Superman,” one of the most expensive films ever made, is on pace to produce a $278 million profit for Warner Bros. once home video, TV and merchandise proceeds are tallied, according to SNL Kagan analyst Wade Holden. That’s less than the estimated $300 million the studio earned from “Man Of Steel.”

I have found all of Snyder's movies good "enough" (I haven't seen the Legend of the Guardians one and BvS) although I think I liked MoS the least (I rated it 5.5/10).

But BvS looked *super* retarded from the first trailer.

Because Watchman was a fantastic and mature comic which Synder basically filmed frame to frame and only the scenes where he made changes were slightly worse.
