Oculus ffs! |
Exactly what I was thinking... cmon, atleast say something! Hell, even Nvidia tweeted about the release of Oculus in a week...so why cant they say something themself??? |
Maybe they are still thinking about the best way to tell people it's delayed!

Im just staying with Oculus because of the better lenses and less SDE also because the whole point of oculus (as a company) is VR, i know they will be 100% on it.
But i cant deny that the vive and its roomscale thing is pretty appealing. But at the same time devs and other people are saying the oculus can do it too and it works good. Wonder how this is gonna turn out.

I just can't support oculus fragmenting the market, its just been one anti-consumer thing after another.

Theres a leaker in reddit who shared this, interesting read btw, he broke the NDA:
Quote: |
Q: What's with the rumor of a dispute between oculus and valve / htc that caused Oculus to drop Vive support for their store?
A: Well there is that drop-down in the oculus software's devices tab with the ability to add additional headsets. The Rift is the only headset listed right now but it looks like they plan to add more. I don't know valve well enough to know theí
r reasons but the last thing I heard was that they would only support it through a Steam VR layer on top of the Oculus SDK which Oculus didn't like.
Q: That is how Valve supports the rift as well right? There is an Oculus SDK layer on top of SteamVR. But Oculus basically doesn't want to do the same and asked Valve to support the Vive through their SDK alone (something they knew they would never get)?
A: I don't know all the details and it's mostly hearsay from other studios we're collaborating with but it sounded like Valve wanted a full-on Steam layer on top of the Oculus SDK a bit like Ubisoft does it with Uplay on Steam but just when using the Vive and not on a game-by-game basis but Oculus wasn't too happy with that. There is also a bit of pressure by Valve to ditch the OVR SDK completely and use OpenVR for all PC builds but that would mean we wouldn't be able to use the Oculus Store and would have to miss out on visibility and profit.

Personally im into the visual quality but im pretty sure ill make a forceful purchase of the Vive further ahead.

Valve should be ahead here and hopefully able to sway future VR Devs with reach of the steam userbase. I really hope this rogue bs oculus store fails to segment VR from the rest of PC gaming (which is its sole intention).

No. Currently, the Oculus software and VR applications must be stored in C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus.
We plan to enable installing downloaded VR applications to another location in a future release. |

A bright future awaits the Rift, if even such a simple feature is not implemented yet.

Fair enough. I can clearly see the space between pixels (SDE) in the Gear VR but still, impressive IPD for a mobile phone. 4K screens will help with that I'm sure. Also, the free 360º roaming present in mobile devices (no attachment whatsoever) makes for different experiences, so it's obviously a win/win situation if you possess a top Samsung smartphone and a reliable computer.

Wait what, I HAVE to install to a specific drive and folder?!
I KNEW this whole thing was going to be Zucked up. I imagine none of this was imagined back in the kickstarter days, but as soon as Zuck got his hands on it, it was immediately about how much muney they can make, and how much they can lock people into it.
It's like how Apple would do iVR
(Wouldn't a simple Symbolic link solve the install folde issue?)

most likely it will, I don't think that there is any hidden logic behind this, most likely they are either lazy or trying to reach out to their facebook idiot customer

But just because some program had it like that 10 years ago, doesn't mean it has to be like that nowadays.
Such a feature belongs to good programming. Something those Facederps (or whoever is in charge of the dev team) don't know.

I'm not a programmer but im guessing it's built from the ground and up with certain priorities and this one is not especially high.. maybe it's something that fits further down or they'll have to redo stuff again. I bet its often like that when programming. but again, no real insight into it i will admit.

Also, here is a workaround:
You can create a special kind of folder "shortcut" on your C drive that points to a folder on your X drive (for example) and Windows will treat it exactly like a regular folder. These are called JUNCTIONS.
You use the Windows command prompt to create a junction.
In this example, we'll assume we are moving the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus" to instead be stored at "X:\My Storage\Oculus".
Move your existing folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus" to the location you actually want it stored at "X:\My Storage\Oculus".
Click Start > Run then type cmd into the box and hit enter to open the Windows command prompt.
Type the following line into the prompt, ADJUSTING THE FOLDER LOCATIONS AS NEEDED:
mklink /J "C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus" "X:\My Storage\Oculus"
That's it! From now on when ever anything tries to access a file inside of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus", Windows will automatically grab the file from "X:\My Storage\Oculus" instead. This means your HDD space on your C drive is safe! Woo hoo!
fuck ...
