Spears at least in the earlier installments had great reach while not being as slow as the greatsword weapons but the thrusting attacks left you open and it took a while to recover after attacking with them so I expect it'll be similar here.
Not the greatest overall damage either but if you get in several quicker attacks it does make up for it plus there's probably a way to enhance weapons in this game too.

You could also use spears whilst blocking in Dark Souls 1. Not sure about second one.
well i personally more often than not use games as kind of escape from real life and its social interactions, so more often then not I just enjoy my lonetime without being bothered by some pseudosocial feature ....
But the online part is most fun thing in the Souls games.
