Yep. Everyone with a somewhat good job should be able to afford things like that, even after a few months of saving.

The only question is, if those people really need that device.

probably not. because there won't be enough content in the next years. but you either have it or you don't. i rather have it.

Would need more than 1-2 months of savings, even in ideal conditions. And even after doing that it would be to play what, 5-10 proper games that would make proper use of it? Maybe 15-20 by the end of the year?

It's still too soon, I believe.

well if i understand it right, it'd be the difference between watching or playing something on a 20-30 inch screen, or simulating it on a 60" or greater screen? if the illusion is real enough, then it should be the same difference between using an actual 20 inch and an actual 60 inch? and you couldnt argue the experience is the same between the two sizes, surely..

As I understand the resolution isn't high enough to be the same as the real thing but it will get better in the future.

Just wait. Most of the price is based on 'muh research'. I wouldn't expect the price to be this high later. What do you get in the package now? Some crappy earbuds, some free games, a HMD with some smartphone display and some IR strobes on it so the two IR cameras you track your movements. Oh, and the controller which also has an IR strobe on them.

A said, that price they're asking for is mostly just for the "research". Just wait.

Other than the "Wow, it looks like a room!" it feel gimmicky and pointless to me for the cinema thing. Just my viewpoint. I loved the Rift itself, just not the "2d screen rendered in 3d off in front of you" use of it. I'll play the shit of out 3d games in it when I get my oculus FINALLY shipped. But have no desire for the looking at a virtual room and a virtual screen one.

It's nothing like flatscreen 3D, which IS pretty pointless due to fixed viewpoint and the need for glasses, poor brightness etc. And I can say that cos I've tried 3D.

So all you VR naysayers, STFU until you've donned the goggles eh?

I'm not talking about VR in general, Like I said I have the Dk1 and I LOVED it for what it was for its actual VR 3d games part. Was talking specifically about me using it to watch 2d stuff on a simulated 2d screen in it. I couldn't even make it thru 5 minutes of a movie on it before I went "I'm just going to take it off and watch it on my screen".

Tried it on the DK2 also, but it wasn't the resolution, it was the concept of putting on a headset to watch a movie on a fake movie screen that's 'flat' anyway that didn't appeal to me.
Not bashing the idea of it. Just its one of the options I can say for fairly certain I won't use my rift for.
If you enjoy more power to you just not my thing. I personally just really wasn't feeling the concept appeal of it. I GET the why of the appeal, just not something that appeals to me.

I'm getting the rift (and probably vive..damn my desire, so much money to spend) to be able to be transported to visually realistic places and do things I can't in real life in imaginary places I also can't find in real life. Sitting in a movie theater I can do already dont need to strap a VR helmet on it to do it.

I guess to me its like using the holodeck to pretend you are in a room watching TV eating cold pizza, seems counter intuitive.

A $20 pair of Google cardboard glasses and my Samsung Note 4 already gave me a very enjoyable "movie theater" experience and I can only imagine the Vive being even better in this regard since cardboard doesn't allow for adjusting the lenses.

And what the appeal is?

- being able to watch a movie on a giant screen while in bed
- 3D movies without needing a 3D monitor
- immersion + privacy
- the possibility of 360° movies

We are so used to looking through movies through a window that the idea of being IN a movie and being able to look where you want doesn't enter the minds of enough people.

But I'm not a big movie person Razz I've seen 2 movies I was vaguely interested in in the theaters in the last 8 years, and only because others wanted me to go. I was going to pirate them and watch them on the TV.

I get the concept and the appeal like I said. Just even a 360 degree 3d movie seems less appealing to me than just gaming. At that point it a 2 hour long 3d game cutscene you can't control anything but the camera rotation in to me Smile
I'm not saying its a horrible idea at all, just not a thing Id have any interest in using my rift/vive for personally.

http://www.pcgamer.com/by-2025-robots-will-touch-you-in-vr-and-other-bold-predictions/

Quote:
But good news: there will be 8 million Vives, Oculus Rifts, or PlayStation VR headsets sold this year, and "starting in 2016, VR headsets will be in the consumer market permanently. They're not going to go away." VR developer and Schell Games CEO Jesse Schell made this and many more bold prophecies about the future of VR in a talk titled "40 Predictions for VR/AR through 2025" at GDC 2016 today. It was a packed session: many of the attendees likely caught Schell's terrific DICE 2010 talk in which he shared equally bold thoughts about the future of gaming and Facebook on the way to painting a picture of extrinsic reward systems connected to everyday tasks.

A timeline of some of Schell's most interesting predictions:
By the end of 2017, the media will blame at least one mass shooting on a VR game.
An asymmetric party game will be a top ten VR game by the end of 2017.
By the end of 2017 news stories about 'VR addiction' will be frequent.
Madden will have a VR edition by 2018 ("Because why wouldn't they?" Schell says).
VR documentaries will be the first to win awards.
By the end of 2020 at least one VR MMO will have 1M subscribers. (Free-to-play doesn't work well in VR—It interrupts your experience, it's presence-breaking, Schell says).
    By 2025, VR/AR boardgames will be a $100M business.
By 2025 there will be no more corded VR systems.

I completely agree, but I like the idea when we get to the 4k per eye displays one day that I can mimic a full size theatre with acceptable resolution and that way watch movies on a movie theater sized screen from the comfort of my home.

Ok, hurry and release all these VR devices !
So reviews and comparison can be made.

This has to stop, people must realise they will NOT be able to experience proper VR on their consoles nor their fucking smartphones !
At least not in the near future.
