Release Date: 19 July 2016
Quote:
This is the story of Setsuna; a young woman of incredible inner strength and the sacrifice she must make to save the people of her land.

The Island had a custom.
To maintain peace, once a decade, a sacrifice was offered to a fiend on the island.

However, one year, the fiend grew violent before the next sacrifice was due.
Those living on the island were afraid and tried to calm the fiend by offering a sacrifice; Setsuna, chosen because of her powers of enchantment.

Setsuna must leave with her safeguards for the farthest land, where the ceremony of sacrifice will be held.

Key Features:
  • A great homage to JRPG masterpieces of yesteryear, using the latest technology to develop a truly memorable story and player experience and bring the authentic JRPG style to current hardware.
  • A new battle system inspired by the timeless JRPG classic, Chrono Trigger.
  • An emotionally impactful and memorable story which immerses players in the narrative of Setsuna, whose story portrays heartrending sorrow.
  • Beautiful character designs and varied in-game locales evoke nostalgia for classic RPGs.

Led by director Atsushi Hashimoto, Tokyo RPG Factory aims to capture the narrative depth, impactful storytelling and masterful character development inspired by the golden era of Japanese role-playing games and bring them to current hardware and technology. With a battle system inspired by the classic hit Chrono Trigger, I am Setsuna brings back authentic RPG gameplay, beautiful art design and a sorrowful story to the new generation.

Gameplay:
Project Setsuna is a role-playing video game in which players take control of a party of characters, navigating environments from an angled top-down perspective. Locations such as towns and dungeons are reached by navigating the game's overworld. In towns, the party can talk with villagers to reveal plot elements, and find treasure chests containing useful items. Various items such as healing potions or "Mistone" items for escaping from battle are sold in shops in towns and across the world.

Gems/Character Customization:

In addition to weapons and armor, there are also items known as “Gems” that you can equip to learn new command techniques or obtain additional effects.

There are a variety of Gems, which can be attached or detached at any time. The number of Gems you can equip at the same time increases each time you level up.

Gems can be acquired through the shop. You can bring the various materials you get as battle spoils to the shop, and if you have the required amount of materials, you can exchange it for a Gem. The materials required for each Gem varies.

Types of Gems
•Wall – A Gem that teaches you magic that reduces damage received from the enemy. By pressing the button at the proper timing, its effect is raised, and if you use the “Setsuna System,” it extends to the entire party, as well.
•Provoke – Provokes the enemy so that you may take all their attacks. When used with the Setsuna System, it has an added effect of damage reduction.
•Firebit – The fire attribute attack power of the equipped character is increased.
•Stonebit – Petrifies the enemy at the time of an attack.
•Caloric – Posseses the ability to widen the range of various attacks, and unleashes single attacks as multiple attacks.
•Harvest – Recovers some HP when an enemy is defeated.
•Avenger – Reflects a small amount of received damage.

Active Time Battle

The Active Time Battle (ATB) system is a common characteristic of Square Enix-developed RPGs. Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna‘s battle system is based on Chrono Trigger‘s ATB 2.0 battle system. It is a choose your command-based battle system full of tension.

When your ATB gauge is filled, you can take action. Also, if several characters’ ATB gauges are filled, you can select their actions in the order you prefer.

Depending on where you’re located compared to the enemy, you can deal ranged damage, or damage enemies with the trails of a projectile weapon. By properly devising the timing of your actions, it’s possible to fight more advantageously

(The combat system is based on Chrono Trigger’s; Battles occur seamlessly when you get close to enemies on the field. When the red bar at the bottom fills up, you can take your turn. Your location on the field is also important in battle.

The Setsuna System:
When the Setsuna Gauge at the bottom fills up in battle, the Setsuna System can be activated by pressing a button in time with the activation of a skill. If you do it properly, your attacks will be super strong versions, with higher damage and lots more craziness going on. For example, you might regain HP with every attack.
The combat system is based on Chrono Trigger’s, and is currently being called ATB Ver. 2. Battles occur seamlessly when you get close to enemies on the field. When the red bar at the bottom fills up, you can take your turn. Your location on the field is also important in battle.

Setsuna Famitsu review
Quote:
score 8/8/8/8 [32/40]
-Embodiment of the concept of good ol' RPG. Graphics have deep flavor, sad story, piano BGM help bring atmosphere
-Battles are steadily interesting
-They don't really feel anything originally new
-Stone customization & Strategic element in Setsuna system are good
-Too much loading in towns, a bit troublesome
-Takes about 20-25 hours to clear

It's giving me SaGa vibes.

YES PLEASE.

Most JRPGs need to go back to the way they were in the late 90s.

Hopefully the actual translation isn't as bad as the "translated" name of the game.

That looks incredible! I love the CT-style battles and even the environment interactions with the snow, seeing the snow deform during battle is such a little thing with an enormous impact on atmosphere. The music is lovely, the combat is FF/CT turn-based gloriousness, and I cannot wait until this is out Very Happy

I Am Setsuna Hands-On Shows Off Its Unique Turn-Based Combat
Quote:
I am Setsuna may have been born from love of Chrono Trigger and classic turn-based RPGs, but the PAX East build showed that the game was willing to branch out into complex new areas to keep its combat interesting with varied tactics and battle abilities.

Combat could have been a very standard affair, but Tokyo RPG Factory set out to make it a complex affair for players who wanted to get the most out of their characters. Judging from this build, I am Setsuna’s focus on storytelling, sadness, and character depth does not appear to have come at any cost to the technicalities of combat.

Here is a review of the japanese version: http://www.jrpgreview.com/setsuna.html
seems like it's not a very long game 20-25 at best which is ok i guess since it's it's similar to Chrono Trigger which wasn't a very long game either (but had fantastic replay value).
Unfortunately it seems a bit rushed as well according to his review could have been a classic if SE gave them more time (and Money).

Good chance to broaden your horizon chap a lot of JRPGs are truly fantastic (ok maybe i am a tiny bit biased cause it's my favorite genre but still Very Happy ) don't know about this game since i have not played it so far but i wouldn't count out a whole genre just cause i dislike 1 or 2 games in it.

RPG Site - 90
While much of its charm comes from its attention to traditional design minus the frustrating elements, those with the patience to explore the opposite spectrum of big budget, hollow excursions may find satisfaction in this wonderfully mature experiment in the modern era.

Quote:
CGMagazine - 90
I can’t think of another game that manages to evoke the themes it presents to players so well. In every way imaginable, from the plot, to the scenery, to the music, and even to the combat system, I am Setsuna wants players to question their mortality, the time they have left, and the decisions they can make in that time.

Quote:
The Daily Dot - 90
While not as challenging as some of the JRPGs of the past (no Emerald Weapon here, sorry), I Am Setsuna makes it clear that someone is listening to all of those grumbly veteran gamers who miss the adventures that made them fans for life. They long for a story to care about, and that's what this game provides.

Quote:
Playstation Universe - 80
I Am Setsuna brings to light all the memorable aspects of what made classic games classics. With the good outweighing the bad, I Am Setsuna embodies old concepts and creates a challenge worth undertaking, even if the pilgrimage to the end is as difficult for the player as it is for Setsuna.

Quote:
Stevivor - 75
I Am Setsuna is the good kind of nostalgic. It utilises the best elements of the past to its benefit, rather than to excuse an otherwise lacklustre game. And yet, while playing to the nostalgia it also makes sure to do something different to set it apart. The more sombre tone of the story means you’re not going to be adding a chivalrous frog knight to your party here, but the package you get it doesn’t suffer as a result.

Quote:
Game Informer - 75
I Am Setsuna has lots of nods to Chrono Trigger, from its general combat framework to specific references to skills like X-Strike and Luminaire. However, it doesn’t capture why most players connected to that seminal title. Even though the combat is entertaining, I Am Setsuna’s characters are dull, the environments are repetitive, and the story is predictable.

Quote:
Hardcore Gamer - 50
Who would have thought a game with a snowy setting such as this would look so dull? There’s some good to be discovered in I Am Setsuna, but it’s overshadowed by its sheer unoriginality and repetitiveness.

I'd find asking a toilet about the game as useful as those review sites/scores. Has anyone tried the game yet care to give a review? (even better if your a chronotrigger fan).

Still seven hours until unlock so unless someone here works as a reviewer or the game is already available elsewhere such as say GOG I don't think anyone here has been able to play it yet.
