Man, it really is dumb design to lock content off until later when you're already 'finished' with an area . How I hate it when games do that!

@riptide77

it depends on what card you've got..

NVidia: performance is either the same as in DX11 mode or a bit lower
AMD: performance is considerably lower

Dx12 Gimpworks Edition , same as the game itself Laughing

It's strange though - there is a definite improvement under DX12 for me (I used the Soviet Installation area to test). I mean, I suppose I am not that surprised by AMD doing badly with an Nvidia title, but those 980Ti-s doing so badly, when i am clearly getting different results is just odd.

The benchmark is kinda useless as well if you only take the summary results. If I look at those numbers from when I ran it, it shows no real gains and even slightly lower performance (couple of frames), which really doesn't show what I get from actual gameplay.

@MinderMast

Interesting.. When I tested actual gameplay my results were practically the same computerbase got in their performance review.

Perhaps they are testing in some places that already have the GPUs working at full, in which case DX12 is not going to magically make things better. Although I am still surprised by the negative trend. I got at least a few frames from it even in "good" areas. Main benefit in this case is still frametime consistency, which you can't really show with average FPS numbers.

In any case here's a couple of screens from the installation area near comms tower, if anyone wants to compare. First one under DX11, the second one - DX12:

i think we (and the tech sites etc) still havent figure out in which case exactly dx12 brings improvements atm. the pics published by crystal dynamics showed an improvement of ~14 fps too (so round about that kinda applies to your case too)

Worst cases (or best cases for DX12, I suppose) are not that tricky. You find a situation with bad GPU utilization and lower framerates. Many games have that these days. That is a typical scenario where you have DX11 (or sub-optimal use of it) stalling the whole thing and is one of those issues DX12 is supposed to fix. I am pretty sure that is how those "up to lots of %" get plastered all over the promo shots touting benefits of DX12. It might not represent what you get most of the time, but it's technically true all the same.

It's possible they have a really powerful CPU, so they just "brute force" past those bottlenecks hiding the effect DX12 has. However, I find it hard to believe that any reputable tech site is unaware of the issues DX12 or other low-level APIs are trying to deal with and can't come up with a proper way to test it.
Then again, with enough of them using standard benchmarks and AVG FPS results to test CPUs and then claim there is no difference between SB and Skylake, it may very well be the case Very Happy

With that said, ROTTR is different, since there is clearly something wrong here. You wouldn't expect results like that no matter how you test it. Definitely not like what you see with AMD GPUs.

DX12 performs better for me, too. It's about equal in GPU limited situations, and about 20% faster in CPU limited.

But if you have a dx11 card you wont get any benefit, right? or?

Rise of the Tomb Raider will receive Cold Darkness Awakened, its final slice of extra content, on the 29th March.

That date applies to the Xbox and PC versions of the game - you'll be able to pick up the pack either via the Xbox Marketplace, Steam or Windows 10 stores.

Season Pass holders will get it for free. Its standalone price has yet to be announced.

Cold Darkness Awakened adds a new wave-based combat mode to the game where, as Lara Croft, you must fight off groups of infected enemies.

[03-29-2016] PC Patch notes for patch 1.0.647.2 (Patch #6)
We have just released the sixth PC patch for Rise of the Tomb Raider, build 1.0.647.2. This patch adds updates related to the new Cold Darkness Awakened game content, as well as a variety of other fixes. For details please see below.

This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client. If you are using the game on the Windows Store, the update will be available later in the day, and will be downloaded by the Windows Store automatically.

Cold Darkness Awakened

Decommissioned during the Cold War, a dormant weapons research base has been breached, unleashing a mysterious affliction into the Siberian wilderness that transforms men into blood-thirsty, mindless killers. Lara must overcome increasingly dangerous waves of these infected adversaries while scavenging their equipment and crafting additional gear on the fly, in kill or be killed survival-combat. Fight for your life against new enemies and complete new challenges, while discovering a way to stop or perhaps even reverse this impending catastrophe. Includes the Ushanka outfit which reduces Lara’s damage from melee attacks, the devastating Voidhammer shotgun, and the Cold Darkness Awakened Card Pack which includes over 15 new Expedition Cards.

Cold Darkness Awakened will be available to Season Pass holders as well as for individual purchase at 9:00am PDT.

Bug Fixes

Gameplay / Progression fixes
Fixed an issue in the Byzantine Bath House that occasionally prevented Lara from interacting with the crank on the raft.
Fixed an issue in the Byzantine Bath House where the raft physics could become erratic and break the puzzle.
Fixed several issues with the basecamp after completing Baba Yaga that could prevent players from accessing outfits or fast travel until the checkpoint was reloaded.
Added chance to loot Deer Antlers from resource chests in Endurance.

Minor Gameplay fixes
Prevented achievement progress for ‘Season of the Witch’ and ‘Complete History of Witchcraft’ from being obtained in Replay Mode.
Prevented Survival Caches obtained in Replay Mode from counting towards ‘The Witch Bottles’ achievement.
Added a default Gold Star for Baba Yaga in Score Attack mode after completing it.
Disabled ability to select the ‘Cocktail Party’ challenge in the Witch’s Cave in Baba Yaga.
Fixed appearance of the Wraithskin and Valiant Explorer outfits in some core campaign cinematics.
Prevented Lanterns in the Ropeworks from counting twice in Score Attack mode.
Added cosmetic improvements to the final cinematic in Baba Yaga.
Additional miscellaneous fixes to Baba Yaga and Endurance mode traversal.

Some improvements to stereoscopic 3D rendering.
A variety of other smaller optimizations, bug-fixes, and tweaks.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone, if you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build 638.8, that can be used to switch back to the previous version.

We will keep monitoring for feedback and will release further patches as it seems required. We always welcome your feedback!

Just finished it with about 76%. Too lazy to collect all the crap around the map.

The game felt like I was playing the previous one. Too much the same too little new. Story was silly and naive even the game had potential to do much much better.

Too much of a pew-pew and too little of puzzle solving and avoiding traps etc..

18h for a free game is not bad though. Thanks to NVIDIA and ASUS. Devil Troll

Square Enix teases “exciting” Tomb Raider news before E3 2016
Quote:
Square Enix has announced that it’ll be revealing some Tomb Raider news soon. In a new blog post titled ‘The Road to E3, the publisher shed some light on some of the games it’ll be bringing to E3 2016.

This is the first part of many such updates that will be released from now and until E3 opens on June 14. The next one will feature “exiting Tomb Raider news,” according to Square.
