the tracking tech in hololens is no doubt amazing and technically groundbreaking, like kinect was, technically
but their visual presentation tech is just shit
tiny fov, additive only and wobbles around as you move your head
the way they're hyping it, it will be a colossal failure
but i hope hackers find actual good use for the tracking tech
@shole: you used it by yourself? everyone who could try it was stunned by what was delivered.
ofc the video from the presentation looks a bit different cause it could only be shown to everyone using that guy on stage with the special camera running around the hololense dude
yep ofc, its way to much to just fool around with it. but that looks like a "real" devkit to me what ms delivers, and not only a kinda prototype device like oculus had with the so called devkit (which was sold mostly not to devs)
This whole concept is flawed. Unless the FOV is hugely improved, this is of little use to anyone; I can't really think of any practical purpose unlike 'true' VR.
And how many developers are really prepared to drop 3k on something that they have no real idea on how it's going to sell. At least with OR it was cheaper and was more likely to be a success.

tbh i dont think gaming is the main target they are going for. will take time till talented developers are able and have ideas how to use this in the best way

i've used equivalent ar display tech
always when non-technical people come across technology that varies from the norm they get their minds blown
with any critical technical review it's clear where it stands in the promises vs. actual product scale, and hololens is way, way, way back
visually it looks like cheesy starwars style translucent holograms (also it's technically not holograms)
but worse, the way the low fov just suddenly cuts off is a huge bonerkiller
it completely destroys all belief that any of it is actually there
the hand tracking is limited to currently only one gesture; a really awkward pinch, like squeezing a nipple (so they added a controller, which is the right choice imo)
it's all self contained mobile hardware so there's very little you can actually render on it - nothing like shown in the stage demo, and i'm doubtful of minecraft as well
Someone needs to do the first steps, so lets just take it for that.
Why they didnt develop cooler apps to showcase it is completely beyond me though.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
3.000$ is a pretty hefty price for the dev kit. I would have expected a much lower price, to get more devs jump on the HoloLens train.
I doubt many interested people will buy it now. Probably only big companies that develop apps for their own company only - like car manufacturers.
They should just give free dev kits to selected people to start pushing it.
3000$. Thats basically a smartphone with low fov display on head. A bit pricey for something to have small box mimicing tv on wall in my living room with hot laptop on my head
