It's cheaper than I expected. If they ever come out with the controllers for the Rift, I'd bet they end up making the price of both units pretty damn close to equal if not equal. And for my money, the Vive has a better feature set. I'll be placing a vive preorder next week. I'm hoping they'll announce the bundles before preordering goes live though. If they give a hefty discount on a new card to go with it like has been rumored, I'll get that instead.

This is a really good point... iso demos is the main reason I'm happy to get a Vive...

900€
Would never pay that, especially not for a first iteration of unproven tech (Unproven as in sales and products that go with it). I'm sure there are enough people who would though.

DOA? How so? At least for the euro pricing, that's pretty much right in line with the $799 US prince + VAT added in. Some places will be slightly more and some slightly less depending on the actual VAT there (and the exchange rate fluctuation). NZ is also pretty accurate when you convert $799USD to NZD, then add the .15% GST and the entry fees.
Basically, you pay $799 + whatever taxes your country or state charges. |
I obviously don't mean to say that VR headsets are dead in the water or the Vive in particular
but in terms of a sales perspective, it's a headset that only works with high end computers that need to purchased separately, We're talking about a $1000+ investment before you can even consider a VR headset for these crazy prices.
Think of the PS3's legendary launch price back in 2006, $599. but it was whole system, not a peripheral add-on to a more expensive system like a VR headset.
I dunno what's going on with Oculus, since they got bought out by Facebook, I thought they would price it wayy cheaper but I guess they're nervous about their ROI and since their main focus is on hardcore PC gaming applications at the moment. Facebook probably told them they'd have turn a decent profit or break-even on the product or we go social, who knows...

Yeah but even a $700-900 smartphone will stand on its own, while VR set needs a $800-1000 system in order to work at all (at least the vive and occulus will).

Spending 900 bucks for a sweaty peripheral to even more expensive pc and having barely any games support is different than spending 700 dollars for a standalone amartphone that does so many thinga.... And its like 200 upfront and rest of it in a 2year plan.
I had both dk1 and dk2 for months. Also used gearvr2.
None of those was close to being usable. Fov too low, optics only sharp in the middle, hot and sweaty, headaches... Still fantastic feeling of 3d and presence with them but this design is flawed so far and neither oculus or vive seems to have fixed my main gripes with those headsets.

Well, almost all of those but at a reasonable level
But the main thing is that with a phone you wont need a $800-1000 battery/charger for it to work at all.
Wouldn't never ever EVER spent $700 on one though

PSVR will be the entrance to VR for most people. With Sony funding behind the software it will also have the games with the higher production values among the others. But it will get outdated the fastest and the PS crowd is the least likely to upgrade to PSVR2 so..

The PSVR has DK2 resolution for starters...
But the main issue I see is you can only play official PS4 VR games, we are not going to see anything quality for a long time after PSVR is released.
On PC however we are going to get hacked games, VR ports, indie games and plenty of official releases.
Think of it this way, the PS4 launch had pretty bad games, if they can't get games ready for their console launch how are they going to do it for the VR launch?

PSVR looks worse but not much.
Hacked games and VR ports are not going to sell VR.
Indie games the PS4 gets plenty, the edge will be on PC though of course, and "official releases" the PS4 will have the edge because of Sony's funding.
But like I said, later releases from Oculus or HTC will make the PSVR look ancient and I don't think the console userbase will want to buy a PSVR2 so Sony will be stuck with the headset they release now (at least for quite some time).

I might have been interested, if it was around 400€. But 900 is just rediculous.
I wouldn't even know if my pc is able to run the games I want to play in VR. I've never tried the Occulus either, so I don't know if I might get motion sickness or am able to see through the screen door effect.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

For that much money I could get a pretty sweet bicycle frame.
Just wait it out until VR becomes the norm and this doesn't end up as a really expensive paper weight.
