Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger’s long-in-the-works TV series about a ’70s New York City record label exec has been picked up by HBO. As Collider reports, the network has officially placed an order for the project and announced its cast.
The as-yet-untitled show — which has been in development since 2011 — will focus on the “drug and sex-fueled music business as punk and disco were breaking out”, according to a press release (via Rolling Stone). Scorsese is set to direct the pilot episode and, alongside Jagger, will serve as one of the show’s executive producers. Terrence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) has been tapped as showrunner.
Actor Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire, Third Watch) joins the cast as American Century Records president Richie Finestra, who must make a “life-changing decision” amidst the chaos of the ever-evolving ’70s music scene. His wife Devon, a former actress and model, will be played by Olivia Wilde (Her, Tron: Legacy). Ray Romano has also signed on as Zak Yankovich, American Century’s Head of Promotions.
This new HBO series is just one of many music-related projects from Scorsese. Previously, the renowned director released a George Harrison documentary and helmed Michael Jackson’s 1987 music video for “Bad”. He’s currently at work on a Ramones biopic.

Vinyl, from Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter, launches its 10-episode season on Sunday, February 14 at 9 PM with a two-hour premiere directed by Scorsese.
It's good, the potential is there. Production values are movie-like, the pacing is great, it's believable since it perfectly recreates the atmosphere of that time (the music )
The acting is solid too as per HBO tradition. (Well, maybe except for the guy who does Robert Plant xD)
its definitely not one of the better hbo shows, atleast from episode 1.
the writing is actually not good at all and simply covered up by high production values and 70s atmosphere. atleast its something that has potential.
There is a major behind-the-scenes shakeup at HBO’s 1970s rock n roll drama Vinyl as the series heads into its second season. Co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Terence Winter has been let go over creative differences. Feature writer Scott Z. Burns (The Borne Ultimatum) has been named executive producer/showrunner and Max Borenstein (Godzilla) executive producer on the project

There are flaws (some episodes are lacking in the pacing department, and there are occasional miscasts when it comes to portraying some of the rockstars), but I still enjoy the mood, all the main characters and their endeavors. Bobby Cannavale is especially great here
+1 at what Zeel said, that sounds like an ominous move. I imagine the second season will be dumbed down to cater to a larger audience, the one that isn't even interested in the first place
