Firstly, thank you so much for all the great feedback we’ve received following the unveiling of our Battlezone reboot for virtual reality devices.
Having to keep quiet about something we’re crazy excited for has been a challenge, so to finally showcase it at E3 and see so many people just as excited for the game was really gratifying.
As our teaser trailer revealed, our VR version of Battlezone is very much a reboot of Atari’s 1980 arcade classic, a game we’re very fond of at Rebellion. However, we also know that a number of you are fans of the 1998 and 1999 Battlezone games released by Activision that re-imagined the franchise as a groundbreaking hybrid of FPS and RTS gameplay. Naturally when we made our announcement last week some of you asked, “But what about the newer Battlezone games? What are you doing with them?”
Well, we’ve read your comments, articles, emails and posts and we’ve seen your love for these games – so we wanted to make another brief announcement:
We’re very pleased to reveal that we’re also working on a remaster of the 1998 Battlezone for PC.
It’s still early days but when we’re ready to show you more you’ll be the first to know. All we can say for now is that whichever vision of Battlezone you love, you’ve not been forgotten!
I loved the '98 version, it was such a great action/RTS hybrid.
But what would be more amazing (for me at least, and sorry for the little off topic, but this just came to me as soon as I saw Battlezone) is that Activision had another sweet little classic gem from that time called Interstate '76... Now if only that would get a remaster too...
Great, it's only on PC. They seem to just very minimally worked on this to run on modern os and put it on steam. A couple of the guys that worked on the actual game in 98 run a forum and are keeping the game up to date, running on win 7 and widescreen. Basically Rebellion seems to have talked with those guys to make a full release so they can resell it on steam. When they announced that they're doing a release i was scared they're gonna gimp and retard the game so consoles and pads can run it. This game uses more than 50 keys on the keyboard, so the retard-isation would have been severe if they'd have tried to force the game on pads like so many others before them. Thank fuck its only on PC and the same game as in 98.

Completely agree with you, this is just perfect. The thought of having a reboo with auto-everything and made for the 4-button-powered d-pad was horrifying..
("what's the point, with those dated visuals and clumsy gameplay" ~ average poster on the Steam forums probably)
There are two Battlezone games coming in. Both of them from same studio - Gearbox. 1.st one is simplistic graphics and gameplay possibly for VR and second is Battlezone 98 Redux which is not remake, but REMASTER. As you can see, it should be the very same game with pimped up graphics and possibly unitcount raised.
Unfortunately none of these games are bringing full Battlezone sequel with modern gfx and unseen storyline. I really appreciate both of these games and just hoping with upcoming support they will be able to make decent sequel as we wish for almost last 20 years.
Played the original to death when it was only available on the arcade machines back then. Blast of a game, that required lightning reactions to get that top score, that of which I no longer have, unfortunately.
Still, was great going down the pub just to see if anyone had beat your score
Battlezone is a classic game through and through, and though I'm skeptical of Rebellion's upcoming revamp, I have hope. Rebellion says that this is going to be a PlayStation VR exclusive first, then it will hit PC after that. The story itself will be randomly generated across "dozens" of locales. If you complete the game multiple times, more weapons will unlock.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
