The biggest problem I have is: I've read how to teach a puppy to pee outside, but it can hold for 1-3 hours maximum. I'll be working remotely often and my gf is studying so she'll be in home very often. In spite of that I can't guarantee that I won't leave him for more than 2-3 hours.
Do I teach him to pee outside and pee on peeing pads inside simultaneously and remove the peeing pads when he gets older ? Isn't that going to be confusing for him ?

I like the idea of crate training, because the dog is easier to control. But what about peeing? What if I leave him there for 2-3 hours and he pees inside the crate ?
When I had a dog and she was a puppy we just laid down some paper towels on the floor and she peed on that, when it was time to go outside with her she also did it outside. It shouldn't be too confusing for the dog.
Also I don't think dogs really pee inside their crate, I've had a dog for 13 years and she never did that, even when she was little. Of course your mileage may vary.
Be sure that before you take him outside, all the vaccine scheme is well respected, so that his immune system is up and running. I remember how we trained ours to go outside,it was the weekend, and we took him out every 3hrs or so. We have busy schedules as well, while at work we left him some absorbtive pads ( 60cm x 60cm ) where he can pee or poop.
