My Asus 970 Strix is buzzing under load, for now I got used to it but today....
I decided to check out how loud fans are at higher speeds and I found something pretty bad, some kind of vibration when fans are spinning, its present even on lowest speeds but rest of pc fans are kind of hiding it but from around 40% of fans speed it becomes very clear, most hearable around 40-60% of speed, after that fans become loud enough to mask it a little bit.
Below two recordings, unfortunately my crap phone didnt have loud dictaphone so you need to turn your volume up as much as possible:
1. http://picosong.com/8xJS/ I start messing with it around 10 seconds or so, its most audible when I raise fans speed around 35 sec
2. http://picosong.com/8xJK/ taken from a little bigger distance, around 45 seconds most audible after around 1 min 15 sec I was doing more faster switching between fan at very low speeds and above 40%.
I dont want to mess with the card too much it sits very firmly in my motherboard and is secured to case with two screws, I dont see any cables touching the fans inside the card and cables around card arent either in much of a contact(still removing them didnt change anything). I also tried stopping fans with finger but only result is that stopping fan further from back connectors makes the sound a little more quiet but its not like that stopping one of the fans make the sound to go away. What can I do apart from possible RMA ?
ps. The card sagged a little bit in the slot but not too much, anyway rising it a little bit doesnt change sound...
Yes its under warranty, card has only 3 months but somehow I didnt do those fan tests earlier. Could you hear what I mean from those bad quality recordings?
I got a strix 970, when it arrived it made an awful sound... so checked it fully to find a cable inside the card touching the fan. Seated it properly and since then never had a problem.
Doesn't sound like what you are experiencing (sound mine produced was quite different)... but still make sure to check it. Maybe the fans are grinding against the casing due to miss alignment? (But that would also sound different, so ignore this I guess )
Anywho, use 'Advanced RMA' if it's not something simple like that. Contact support first, make them pay for the shipping.

I heard about this cable issue but didnt notice it in my 970. From youtube clips I know stuck cable sounds more "physical" and mine maybe like some fans imbalace? Heatsink not properly tight?
I would have to send the card to online shop I bought it on my own but that would be probably less than 5 euro.
Funny thing is I sent my previous card MSI 650 Ti boost for warranty and other shop I bought claims it has some signs of spilled liquid on it(of course nothing like that ever happened) and they sent it to MSI so I dont have high hopes and now Asus...
Vibration usually comes from the spindle the fans are on or one of ur blades is damged some way. Even a hairline crack in a blade from bad molding issues could cause terrible vibrations, make sure all ur blades are there lol and look for damaged ones, even a chip can do it.

You don't (unless they bar certain countries, haven't experienced that since I'm an entitled westerner ), you can just handle it with Asus directly if you choose. I haven't bothered with shops for quite some time. The good part with these things is that you don't have to pay and most manufacturers do 'Advanced RMA' sending you the new part before you have to send the old one back so: no downtime.
And most of the shops have idiots working for them... at least that is my experience. Less and less do I find people whom are somewhat qualified in the field that sell these products (crappy pay most likely the reason).
I talked with shop I bought it from earlier about gpu buzzing under load issue and they said for warranty I should send the card directly to them.
That is not that big of a problem, few days more without the card is not such a big deal if I have something to use as a backup and 650ti was sent back to MSI few days ago so I need to wait and see how it will turn out.
Until then I must try this card again in another pc, I know under load buzzing was there also but when I went to my friend with pc we didnt ramp up gpu fans.
Small update. My 970 was sent to warranty last week as apart from those fan and under load buzzing problems I started to get driver crashes in every game and benchmark that could be fixed in some part only by decreasing default clocks by like 100-200MHz.
Guys do you have any experience with Asus RMA especially gpu ?
ps. I have also sent my old MSI 650Ti boost on warranty, bad fans or something and occasional driver crashes in chrome and often when waking from sleep mode. I got all the money back which is good since I got the ammount I paid in late 2013.
It's been quite a few years so it wouldn't be representative of how it is now and it wasn't GPU's (not that it makes much of a difference). But... I always thought they were among the better RMA experiences.
Quite a simple and straightforward procedure, the only thing you need to look for is that they cover the sending costs. Some manufacturers will say the customer has to pay, but even then you can influence support to make them pay. That being said... Asus provided package labels back then.
Use support whenever you have questions or something isn't clear. RMA support is vastly different from the usual ones. They are faster and more qualitative than their day to day support.
Morpineus problem with my case is I first had to send it to online shop where I bought it and after like 2 days they have sent it to Asus. Right now I am week and a half since I sent the card but only I think 4 working days since Asus actually has it... Another problematic thing is that because I couldnt send it directly to Asus(after putting serial key on asus rma check I got info I need to send it not to Asus but to place I bought it) I now cant check anything directly with them but need to wait or ask for info shop where I bought it
So over 3 weeks passed since I have sent my card to warranty and shop I bought it from still didnt receive it, its really awesome check it out:
- I sent my card to shop on 11.02
- 16.02 they send it to distributor.
- 22.02 Asus receives it and starts "repair"
- 24.02 they finish that repair and probably sent it back to distributor.
Since then I dont know dates cause noone will give them to me, but I know distributor received it and sent it back to shop of course before that they waited probably few days with sending the card because cheap bastards collect more equipment and send it back in bigger packs but 2 days later after I got info they have sent it, shop still didnt receive it....
Do you see that shit ? Over 3 WEEKS after I sent it, and out of those 3 weeks the card has been in Asus service center for 2 DAYS !
And absolute BEST part of that whole warranty process is that when I asked guy in Asus support about what was the result of that repair he said that in this repair report or whatever you can call it he can see only "BIOS REFLASHED"
So I have sent the card with 3 problems, buzzing under load, malfunction in cooling/fans causing vibrating sound when fans spin and driver crashes and as far as I know only thing Asus did was REFLASHING the bios.
Asus guy claimed that sometimes not everything is included in those reports and service might actually do more than just reflashing the bios but still there is big chance that not only I am waiting a freaking MONTH but there is decent posibility I will get back a card that is still broken.
With a bit of luck it won't be returning to the shop before 11/3, and if that happens go to the shop and demand your money back or a new card, at least that's how it works here. If it exceeds 30 days the shop is fucked and is obliged to give you your money back or a new item with the same value as the old one.
My 4890 was also supposedly sent back to asus, exceeded 30 days and I was on the shop's ass right on the 30th

Unfortunately I dont think this works like that in Poland, from what info I gathered when dealing with this shop I am forced to send the card on warranty, at least first few times. After that I dont know maybe they will be other possibilites, or maybe this waiting will be rewarded with me getting actually working/repaired card.
Just an update about this topic, few days ago I received the card and everything was fixed !
Now back to reality, out of 3 problems I reported to them which again was electric buzzing under load, some vibrating noise from fans/cooling and constant driver crashes they fixed driver crashes so yeah flashing bios was everything they did.
Next week probably I will be sending it for warranty again and Asus dont really give a crap and wont allow me to send it directly to them I will probably be without a card for another month or so since it will be shop, distributor, Asus circle again. But this fucking time I will buy a replacement card(not Asus for sure) so I will be safe for warranty time.
Its also amazing that they still try to claim this electric buzzing from capacitors or whatever that is under any load is normal, YET on their website they advertise cards like 970 Strix saying:
"Choke concrete cores eliminate buzzing sound under full load while capacitors assure a 50,000-hour lifespan: equivalent to 2.5 times longer than traditional capacitors"
Well in this case: all depends in which country you are. He got the short stick with not having RMA available to him. Most of the times when you have to deal with shops... they are what creates the shit in the process.
Reason why I absolutely avoid them unless it's getting my money back and even that is a painful event.
my caps are solid here, not one noise from them, he probably bought a returned card initially that was abused to death with overclocking. That is my guess, or he was unlucky with one of the unfortunate bad cards off the production run, or he rekt it himself somehow and either does not know that he did or does not want to say

One thing is certain I didnt do anything to the card, its my first gpu that is so expensive so I extra careful while doing anything with it and im not unexperienced with stuff like inserting and taking out the card which is pretty much all I did with it. I dont know if it was brand new, it certainly looked like it but who knows.
Also I tried to complain a little bit on Asus facebook and they were supposed to take another look at my case but it didnt achieve anything, standard talk that I have to take normal route which is sendind the card to shop, then distributor and then Asus service center and other blablabla that every device is carefully checked in service center(wasnt my experience) and leaves service center only when passes all tests(maybe there is no test for shit buzzing and vibrating)
I dont believe it wont matter anymore. I will include link to that recording to my warranty description also I have found out now that cards are being repaired in Czech Republic so probably I will write two descriptions, Polish and English and will demand they will pass through everything I wrote.
Here is funny part for you guys, last time I wrote like 2 medium lenght sentences about each of 3 problems I was sending the card with and you know how it ended up when Asus received it ?
1. Electrical buzzing under any load was "coil whine". I think that its not exactly the same and is misleading for person that checks the card, buzzing and while is totally different sound.
2. Vibration like sound coming from cooling/fans when at speeds above around 40% was "fan noise". Again, not partly similar to my description and fucking misleading.
3. "Driver stopped responding..." crashes at benchmarks and games which were present less often only after lowering clocks under default levels was "generates error". This one was easy to detect and pretty much had to be found by any service person that isnt a monkey so not that important but still...
It was probably distributor that changed my problems descriptions, shop claims that they passed through everything I wrote but I dont believe them much. So you try to help them. make stuff easier for them but some retard along the way decides that he knows better and in result lowers your chances for full repair with making it harder for actual service center to actually fix stuff.
So yeah the card is on her way back from second warranty and this time Asus rejected it, saying there is nothing wrong with it and their "tests" didnt show up anything.
Now I have two choices, sell it loosing money and try making proper recordings with video and better sound quality(maybe even with card i 2 different PCs) and try warranty for third time.
I think vendors rarely replace cards because of coil whine, i had similar experience with msi card in EU. Which is bullshit, they all market their new cooling systems as 0db or low db, but they don't count coil whine, wtf am i going to do with 20db fan noise when the card itself buzzes like i there was a power station next to me.
Also i figured out that my card only buzzes when nvidia shitboost 2.0 kicks in and ofc you can't turn it off anywhere, only with custom firmware if your card even has one.
MisterBear I could live with coil whine and it would make it easier to sell but also I have something similiar to this happening when fans are operating and that is fucking more problematic than coil whine but yeah Asus service cant hear shit. Still waiting for card to return
