Is that far in the game or in the beginning?
Also I don't quite understand some mechanics. Why my party members sometimes change positions the moment the battle begins? Is there a specific stats/perk thing that makes them retreat behind or the game does it randomly to force you be more tactical in battles?

Played through what was available in early access a year ago and had a ton of fun.
Looks like not as much has been added since then as people had hoped but I am looking forward to playing it again one of these days.

Definitely another kickstarter project that turned out well.

When I played that happened randomly when you were surprised by enemies (chance of that happening, higher when there's less light I think?)

Played this for a hour yesterday.
It seems to be a pretty good, nice and well thought little game for what it is.

[pussymode]Those rogue (lite) games are rarely my cup of tea though. I can't stand it when you are always on the edge of losing group members, having low items or low money. Sad[/pussymode]

I just witnessed something really stupid. I fed my characters food from the inventory to recover some health, then a few seconds later I got a message saying my people were hungry from adventuring and they all lost HP.

Yeah, don't use food unless you're near the final room of the dungeon, at some point you will get a prompt if you want to feed your party or not, which will heal 5% of their health and will slightly punch down their stress levels a bit.

Always buy food in multiples of 4 (unless someone in the party has stress eater or stress faster, in which case you may be able to +1 or -1) as required.

I budget 8 food for a short dungeon (no camping) so I've got 2 breaks if required.

I budget 12 for a medium dungeon (1 camp takes 8 food) so I've got 1 nom nom if required (and I bring some herbs to hopefully get more food out of a cart/corpse by cleaning it).

I budget 20 for long (2 camps worth) and 1 nom nom, and I'm almost guaranteed to run across more during, so it's cheaper just to buy 2 or 3 herbs and get the rest of the food in the level.

Those figures are a little on the safe side, but better have it and not need it then need it and not have it. It could very well save a character's life as well if things don't go your way.

Also note that backtracking tends to have that food prompt pop up more often, so try not to backtrack unless absolutely necessary.

Liking this a lot though I just know I'm going to absolutely screw myself over on my first playthrough because of some mechanic I don't know about. Playing this blind is truly horrifying Crying or Very sad

I play the game "blind" too. It's a lot of fun.

Talking of character classes, I really like the Man o' War with his riposte skill. The Hellion is also neat.

One of my characters has a green slime/blob icon on their town portrait, does anyone know what it means? I thought it meant they were diseased but none of their negative quirks say anything about it.

Does the game have story and character interaction or is it more about the dungeon crawling?

1 and 2 are still amazing.

Mostly dungeon crawling, almost the entire story is given to you in the intro movie. The only character interaction is when your people talk in the dungeons but it's mostly randomized quips based on their stats (for example someone with the negative perk "Egotistical" might talk about how they're the only competent member of the group, which will in turn have a negative effect on the stress levels of other group members.)

in fact any disease will appear as that icon. You get diseases exploring around. And you can treat them at the hospital (sanatorium) or with camping skills.

The Vestal seems useless as a healer. Party heal for 1-2 damage feels like a waste of a turn when she could be using a stun instead, and the single target heal is also weak. The Occultist's heal usually does more, I've even seen it crit for over 20 hp. The risk of bleeding is worth it if you have bandages.

The game has its own Nexus site btw, lots of nice little mods on there like new classes or new appearances for existing classes. Here's one I'm using:

Vestal is the best healer in the game, bar none. Her heals are more or less consistent, whereas the Occultists more often than not has too big a range on his - anywhere from zero (which is unacceptable later on) to double digits.

My top Vestal does a party heal for 8-9 (sometimes up to 12), and has crit on her single heal all the way up to 30ish. She has a Legendary +33% and Magical +15% heal skills trinkets on her. When you get up to the rank 5 dungeons, an occultist will NOT suffice as a healer. You use a Vestal or you die a horrible death, period.

The occultist is great to pair with classes who have self-heal. Vestal is a must for a boss run with a standard party.

Disabled healing spells when out of combat seems kinda ridiculous.. I mean all these healers suddenly forget their spells or what? Laughing It's a lazy trick to make the game "harder". I hate tricks like that.

Says the build number in the top left of the title screen here. There's also svn_revision.txt in your DD root folder.
