I tried the Rift DK2 a while ago and the technical aspects mostly resolution and such are what bothers me most atm it's just not there yet i really expected more after all the hype i mean yes it's immersive and so on but i can count the pixels and all and it looks blurry
It looks much worse then the monitor i game on, found this image on another board:

That's pretty much how it looked to me. I don't see myself shelling out 700 bucks (euroland ) for this.

Never tried any of these, but damn... is the pixel grid really as noticeable as the image suggests? Looks like my old CRT TV from the 80s that we had when I was a kid... will the commercial version have better definition than the DK2? Or is that it?

It would be so cool to have this at release. But i will now wait for 1-2 years too. Maybe then the prices are more human and we will see, how successful VR really became.

It's better, people say its not noticeable on the CV1. It has new screens built specifically for it, the old screens were manufactured for some mobile phone i believe, they used the same.

For all the negativity surrounding the CV1 launch, poor display is not going to be an issue - it would be suicide to release something that was not a clear improvement over the DK2 at that price. Of course, noone has apparently used one yet, which is... disconcerting.

not sure what you mean with "noone has used one", there has been plenty of demos and previews of CV1..

" and there was absolutely no screen door that I could see. I really tried to focus on individual pixels and found it to be quite difficult."

Sorry, but that link 'http://uploadvr.com/hands-on-with-the-oculus-rift-cv1/' has no screenshots to compare with, so it was a pointless article. The previous one 'http://attackofthefanboy.com/e3/e3-2015-the-oculus-rift-cv-is-amazing-but-the-resolution-could-be-a-problem-hands-on-preview/' again has no useful screenshots. In fact I cannot find a single verified screenshot of the inside of the OC, which makes me curious if there is an embargo of some kind.

never said it had screenshots though, i quoted the person who tested it. you claim noone has tested it, which isnt true.

i dont think there's an embargo, its just rather difficult to photograph the inside of the headset and get a good image. it took quite a while for useful images of the screen door effect to come out for DK2, and there was no embargo.

its also not out yet, maybe when demoed people prefer to play and test it than to photograph the inside of it.

Yep it's really hard making screens which show how you would actually perceive it,
the image above pretty much shows how it looked to me on the DK2, the preview i posted seems to agree that not much has changed since then unfortunately not that many previews with the consumer version exist some say it still has problems some say all is peachy like the other one posted above dunno what to believe tbh.

.."significantly diminished from past iterations." - from the preview you posted, so its not true its the same as before.

I had the DK2 and while the screendoor effect was noticeable i can't say i was too bothered with it unless i decided to look for it (as in not caring about the game and instead start looking at faults).

"significantly diminished" and "absolutely no screen door that I could see" sounds pretty good. Im mostly upset with the price and what it will mean in terms of support..

While they only slightly improved the resolution from dk2 to cv1, the bigger improvement apparently is a higher pixel fill rate. Meaning less blank space between individual pixels, which makes it look less like a pattern.

I have mine pre-ordered for april and if I don't like it, I can probably sell it after a week or two without any loss as long as there still is a pre-order queue.

There are MANY pictures detailing the screendoor effect of the DK2, like the one posted by tet, so it's quite easy to do so for the CV1. It seems very much that OC are unwilling to do so, and are not allowing those who tested it to do so.

People who offer opinions on something usually do so with a certain amount of bias - those who want it to work will generally say it's fine, those who want to find fault will inevitably find some - even if they exist or not.

And when I say 'someone has used it' I mean outside of a heavily controlled environment, with who knows what disclaimers to sign.

Given the resolution and FOV of these things, we are either going to see pixels or the image is blurry. What alternative is there?
VR needs a much higher resolution than a 2D display covering a low FOV.

dk2 was stock mobile phone screen without any diffusers, low pixel fill area
cv1 has custom panels with high pixel fill
vive is somewhere between dk2 and oculus cv1, but certainly way beyond being an issue
dk1 and dk2 screendoor effect was a huge buzzkill for me and i don't even notice it in vive anymore

But you have to mention that depth perception truly works. Yes, with the DK1/2, not sure which I tested, I could see the subpixel structure which caused really bad color issues. Yet, everything looked naturally three dimensional. Even though I only saw a pathetically cheap demo on a linux machine (think counter-strike level of fidelity Razz).
There is no comparing this to 3D televisions or movies.

Apparently more current versions hide subpixel structure, but then they must be blurry... should be pretty neat anyway.

VR is amazing. However I will wait, so I don't have to deal with this resolution. Smile

I hate 3d.

But the damn 3d and depth perception were incredible with dk1 and dk2. Just magic. I wanted to move my hand and touch sunflowers in tuscany demo on dk1. I wanted to touch the seat in cinema on dk1... it felt super real. Size of thing, distance, 3d. everything. like life besides blur and screen door.
And dk2 added leaning to that. I was sticking my head out of the windows in live for speed. pure magic. but the screen was even worse than dk1 for me. Felt weird. Black levels were perfect tho and blur was totally gone.

I remember when dk1 came in december 2013. My dad and I were god damn blown away. He was just walking around in doom3 with god mode and looking monsters in the face Very Happy
Somehow part of that magic was gone with dk2 but it was still great

Scared you might spend it on something useful before that? Troll Face

Very Happy

Scared that something is going to go wrong with the payment and my order will get cancelled. or that my CC I used when I placed the order will get lost and I have to get a new CC and I will have to cancel that card for security reasons.

I got a million reasons to pay now Smile So I dont have to worry.

Then in Feb 29 Im gonna buy the Vive (on my own company that is.. gonna use it for... well research..yes of course... Cool Face )
