So I finally decided to upgrade my WLAN today.
Previously I had an ASUS PCE-N15 300 Mbps Wifi Card in my PC with a DLink DIR-645, which wasn't bad at all to be honest.
However, because I moved back in home, now I had to use the same router with a 2 floors height-difference, where the limits became apparent. Signal was shite, so was bandwidth.
Then I bought a Fritz! Wifi Repeater and was pretty satisfied with the signal coverage.
However, what I didn't know was repeaters further cut down the bandwidth as a sacrifice for better range.
Anyways, you didn't notice anything coming from and going to the internet...
BUT!... but the local performance with my Synology was CRAP! We are talking about less than 1 Mbyte/s transfer rates when copying files from Samba to my PC.
On bigger BRips with high bitrate you noticed pausing, stutters and freezes over Plex and co.
Now I got rid of that Wifi Repeater entirely, installed the new ASUS PCE-AC68 WLAN card:

Installed the new router:
https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC87U/
Bandwidth is now a solid and ultra-stable 30+ Mbyte/s file transfer rate (Samba) from and to my Synology (OVER WIFI! 2 FLOORS!).
Copying 900Mb file over Samba:
The signal strength icon in Windows is not even 100%, it's only 1/3 bars, but still I'm more than satisfied, because now everything it's actually usable.
Uplink is >700Mbps now, despite the still overall weak signal:
Any 5G devices on the same floor as the router (and in proximity) would propably have ~ 2334 Mbps over Wifi. Brutal! xD
I will mess about with the antennas orientation of the router now that I have some first performance metrics and see if I can further improve the signal.
I'm so happy right now.

I got the ASUS RT-AC87U too, but connected my pc using cable.
And I use a ASUS RP-AC52 extender/repeater (for that phone wifi experience when outside).
Love 'em <3
I hate you.

all these expensive wireless cards are completely pointless. It's more cost effective to set up an access point in repeater mode. Better stability and you never have to worry about drivers other than the ones for your ethernet port. Repeaters don't necessarily cut down on bandwidth just because it's a repeater, that'd be an option or a lame ass repeater.

New age routers have serveral modes. You can buy a router and set it to access point, repeater etc, they sell actual access points where you can set it to repeater mode instead.
And why would you need a long cable? The benefit of a repeater is you put it wherever you need it.
I've got these set up as a router and the other as a repeater, don't need a long ass cable for it as it's sitting right next to the devices that need to use it.
