The JAP version of this masterpiece was released today.
Rogue_Galaxy_JAP_PS2DVD-GANT
And of course have I played it and WOW, what a game.
This game really puts every other rpg developer to shame, and it proves once again how superior Level-5 is when it comes to rpg's. I just played for a couple of minutes, but I played enough (played untill I got owned by two giant stone dudes :/) to get the feel of the game and the battle system, and I'm totally sold. The battle system might be the best battle system I have EVER experienced! It's pure action based, and I mean PURE, you can even jump around in battles. It's fast, it's gorgeous and it's incredible entertaining.
It has awesome looking fmv's. The graphics are incredible, towns are great, the character art is amazing, to put it simple, everything is amazing.
I hope the US date isn't too far off because I just cant wait for this game to come out. I know the european date is december 2006, and US dates are normally much earlier, so maybe summer 2006?

hmm i m tempted to get the jap version but then i always end up finishing the games without understanding a word, which spoils a damn lot.
anyway its great that it has such a battle system, i was getting tired of the old school nippon rpg battle system. from now on its all about action for me.

Well, in my opinion, no.
You miss so much if you dont understand a single word. The reason why I died for example was because I didn't understand what the tutorial windows told me, I couldn't even hurt the two stone dudes. And the menu and skills etc are really hard to understand if you dont know japanese.
Monsters appear randomly btw, they aren't visible on the screen.

If it's out in a year no-ones going to give a shit about it. What a mistake by the developers.

true.dat, the ps3 is expected to arrive in the us in a year, atleast for the first few months all ps2 releases will be overshadowed. btw who ever said the ps3 wont feature a hdd?

according to this article it will but its unclear whether it ll be built-in or optional.

Since you seem to know so much about this genre, what kind of superior console-rpg's? As far as I know there are no other console-rpg's being released in 2006 on the xbox360 or the ps3 that is even remotley close to this one, so please share some light.

To which game is the fighting system comparable? Dark Cloud 2 or Kingdom Hearts? I really hope its like Kingdom Hearts. Dark Cloud 2 felt incredibly slow, but Rogue Galaxy having the same developer, it could be like that one. So what is the real-time system like?

Summer 2006 if you're really lucky.

Man, if the battles weren't random this would be awesome, but I feel that the RPG genre has developed beyond that now.
People need to be able to see what lies ahead and be able to prepare, not think "oh shit, I hope I don't have another random encounter before this boss, I saved all my healing potions for him" or "I can survive another attack by a plant fiend, but if I randomly encounter a uber plantzor i'm screwed, oh there we go, i'm fucked, how fun". So they keep reloading until they get the enemy configuration they want. Thats not the way a game should be played.

I love random battles and truly hate visible enemies. Seeing huge creatures running around in a town for example would just look ridiculus.
I can see why some gamers would want visible enemies, but for other reasons than what you just wrote, and here's why.
If you are a console-rpg gamer AnimalMother, you know how to play, and therefor the problems you described wont be a problem. I have NEVER experienced what you just wrote, not 1 single time. Rpg's are all about leveling up to handle new areas, and to hunt for money to stack up on herbs and various items, this is common sense for ANY console-rpg, so if you come unprepared it's your own fault. It has been like this since the first console-rpg, so as I said, it's just common sense for any console-rpg gamer.
Although, if you are new to the genre, then I guess peple would play the way you just described, rush in unprepared. But anyone with the slightest experience will not.

i ve been a console-rpg gamer for a long time, have played everything available on psx and loved every second.
but with time i really grew tired of the random battle concept, and with more time even of the whole round-based fighting as well.
i really cant stand random battles anymore, last time i played ff7 and ff8 i was surprised at how deeply annoyed i felt. i felt like the game was keeping me from playing it, and i didnt feel like that back in the times when these games actually came out.
well rogue galaxy seems to be a really great game, action-based system and the random battles here arent too bad either, no new battle screen appears, you keep fighting on the field and you can easily run away - thats not bad i d say.
anyway, if youre new to the genre you can be annoyed by the system easily, but also if you ve been there for too long. i seriously cant see myself playing through dragon quest 8 anymore, no matter how much i wanted to. i guess i just grew out of rpgs and its good in a way, they use up too much time.

i also hate random battles hated it in every FF game that i got... thank god they did later on few items that will remove the random battles like in FFX when you had to buy this item i forgot its name and that totaly removed the random battles... good thing that FF XII wont have random battles(got the demo) i also gave up on dragon quest 8 the random battles got silly for me...
i hope rougue galaxy comes out soon the way pallebrun tells about it makes me drool..
I teleported home one night
With Ron and Sid and Meg.
Ron stole Meggie's heart away
And i got Sidneys leg.

And where do you place Radiata Stories, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest VIII?

Haha, are you serious?
I mean, you cant be serious with what you just wrote?!?!
The final fantasy series died completley after part9. Part 10 and 10-2 sucked beyond compare. And their latest title, Romancing Saga, was quite shitty too.
Square-Enix died as the top rpg developer many years ago. Many rpg developer own them these days. I used to be their biggest fan, but I took my "fanboyism" aside and saw how shitty they had become.
I'm sure you will open your eyes some day too and see what I saw.
Edit: Dragon Quest8 was not developed by SquareEnix, it was developed by Level5.
Radiata stores was a good game, but neither that was developed by SquareEnix, it was developed by Tri-Ace, the makers of star-ocean.

radiata stories and ffx were mediocre, king hearts wasnt bad and dragon quest 8 is developed by level 5, company that made rogue galaxy as well.
