I've got my build planned out and ready to go - but there is absolutely 0 stock of 6700k's in the US. Whenever any reputable online retailer gets a shipment they're more or less sold out in under 20 minutes. Sad

Not going to entertain the idea of buying from overseas (premium price / tax / customs / shipping, ugh).

I absolutely REFUSE to settle for the 6600K (try as SpykeZ might to convince me otherwise ) Hopefully Intel gets their fucking shit together come October.

You can't call a store or online retailer and make a reservation? Maybe with a down-payment?

I actually managed to snag one this morning off of Newegg. I had to actually buy it in a "bundle" with the 850 Evo I was also getting, else it wouldn't add to my cart.

Anyway, the payment's charged (so I'm going to ASSUME I got one). Very Happy

There's a rumor that the upcoming Intel i7 6950X CPU will retail for 1500$

It is their flagship model I believe and 10 cores with hyper-threading so it was very likely it would be more than the previous 999$ for the top-end model but this is still a pretty large increase though I guess that since there's no real competition and it's primarily for enthusiasts it might probably still sell.

Well if you want you can easily max out any computing device. With renderings, scientific stuff...
Or render (several) videos and stream a game at no performance loss?
Just as I can easily max out a Titan Black's 12 GiB VRAM with a neural network... making it a better card than the 980 TI for that purpose.

Surely this thing is not targeted at normal people

Rebuilding Android from source takes 6+ hours without parallelizing, I would gladly run it with "make -s -j 20" to get it under half an hour. Even if I need just the kernel, getting it in several minutes would be super cool.

In other words, a very tiny fraction of specialised customers. Seems to me they'd be better off with Workstation hardware instead of "enthusiast"-level hardware. How many are prepared to shell out $1000 for a CPU to compile an android kernel faster?

Can't complain about the cost of upgrading to Win10. It's free unless you need an Enterprise version for some reason.

I agree that the users should decide, not MS. Trying to bully people into upgrading to Windows 10 is NOT a good way to get customers.

At the same time I think it's quite sensible wanting to get as many people as possible on Win10, it will create a more heterogeneous platform for MS to support and build on.

Still, let people decide without threats.

What a bunch of bullshit
So why will the updates work properly on my haswell, for instance, but on a skylake suddenly there's this risk of affecting "reliability and compatibility"?

Are specific CPU features on those older generations disabled/changed on the newer ones so much so that microsoft would need to patch them up? Confused

* Intel Skylake freeze when doing certain calculations - Intel is pushing out an update for UEFI-bioses.

Well done Intel. First you bungled up with the TSX instruction on Haswell and Broadwell (and forced to completely disable the instruction), now your Skylake CPU crash/freeze when running certain calculations... like those in Prime95, only one of the most used system stability tools. Laughing

http://www.techtimes.com/articles/123766/20160113/skylake-bug-could-crash-your-cpu-heres-how-to-check-if-your-pc-has-it.htm

Quote:
Intel recently announced that although a number of high-end Skylake CPUs have a tendency to freeze under "complex workload conditions," a fix is now in tow.

Following initial reports targeting only Core i7-6700K desktop CPUs that used Hyper-Threading, Intel explained that more CPUs are vulnerable to the lock-up.

Several forums and IT communities reported the bug during the last period, and tech savvy users replicated the error using Prime95. The software, which is highly popular within the performance and overclocking community, calculates prime numbers by doing highly complex and processing-intensive calculations.

...

The CPU manufacturing company further added that it's working closely with third-parties to deliver a fix through a BIOS upgrade.

...

Oh well, we've had the FDIV-bug (P4), TLB-bug (first gen. Phenoms) and other serious CPU bugs ruin our days before (we tend not to instantly realise that it's a bug in the CPU but instead spend hours, days and weeks trying to figure out why our pc is crashing intermittently.

Guys/Gals.. question..

I gather this is the place to ask as I have the Skylake 6820HK that is fully overclockable (currently @ 4Ghz up from its turbo clock of 3.6Ghz) but I want to input the max voltage recommended to get 4.2Ghz but in the BIOS the Core Voltage setting is only available as an input of whole #s so how do I input 1.215V? 1215? 01215? Something else? I've asked around: nada.. no one ever answers.. don't get it.

Also, as noticed in my sig, I have an MSI laptop and use Intels Extreme Tuning Utility sometimes but the only profiles for overclocking are submitted by Alienware laptops with that processor. Can I use their submitted profiles for my MSI? I want to say YES as I have WatchDog enabled on my system so if something facks up I should be fine. Comments?

My experience with an ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING BIOS UPDATE 1105.Copy/Paste from another place.
--------------
However, i've had a very bad experience with such update. After 2 restarts it refused to load my OS. After some touchings i've reached the OS, but when loading the desktop it stayed as "Preparing Desktop...".. After a few minutes it just loaded a blank background with "This is a pirate license LOL". No icons. The BIOS Updated KILED THE OS.

Later, i've formatted to W7. When i've reached W7, something happened that never happened before the BIOS Update...The mouse's Scrollwheel and thumb buttons DIDN'T WORKED and was LAGGY.. I tought it was a bad format, so i re-formatted. STILL THERE.. I almost gave up, i've installed the MB's CD Drivers....Aaaand the mouse worked as it should..BUT THAT'S AWFULLY WEIRD!!!!!!!

BEWARE OF BIOS UPDATES!!!!...I tought they fixed stuff BUT THEY DON'T MUCH!!!, AND EVEN KILLS!!!
-------------
I've updated to 1105 because i've heard it'd fix some Skylake bug but ....DANGEROUS UPDATE!!!

http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_roadmap_shows_skylake_x_and_kaby_lake_x_as_successors_to_broadwell_e.html

Quote:

This week we posted our Broadwell-E review, now a new roadmap surfaces. In Q2 of 2017 Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X are mentioned as successor Broadwell-E. That is, it's noted in a roadmap from Intel that has appeared online.

The X-line part seems to be the new name for Intel's HEDT- or High-End Desktop family. The roadmap is published by the Taiwanese site Bench Life, which regularly publishes Intel roadmaps which are often correct. It is striking that both Skylake-X and X-Kaby Lake follow in the third quarter Broadwell-E. The site suggests that Skylake-X as Broadwell-E processors with 10, 8 and 6 cores and a TDP of 140W. Kaby Lake-X would have to serve the mainstream desktop market with quad cores with unlocked multiplier, and TDP of 95W.

Bench Life also publishes a slide of Skylake-W. This is the workstation platform, codenamed Basin Falls. The Skylake-W processors support Socket R LGA 2011 and have a TDP of 140W. They can handle four-channel DDR4 2667MHz memory and the processor are combined with the Kaby Lake-pch to include support for up to twenty PCI-E 3.0 lanes.

Kaby Lake is the successor Skylake and third-generation 14nm processors.

EDIT:
http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52336/intels-next-gen-skylake-processor-arrive-lga-3647-socket/index.html

Exclusive: Intel's next-gen Skylake-E processor will slot into new a LGA 3647 socket, up from LGA 2011 (NASDAQ:INTC)

Computex 2016 - During our first day at Computex, we've spotted some seriously cool hardware, but one of our world exclusives is that Intel will be releasing their next-gen Skylake-E processors onto a new motherboard, with more pins than ever before.

Right now the HEDT processors slot into an LGA 2011 motherboard, but the next-gen chips will be slotting into LGA 3647 socket. This is an interesting tidbit, as it means there'll be new motherboards next year when Skylake-E launches, with 1636 more pins. The socket itself is absolutely huge, especially when compared to the already large LGA 2011 socket, and positively massive compared to the current LGA 1151 in the mainstream market.

How many pins can you stick on a CPU anyway?

Or wait for 8 core Zen? Well at least thats what I'm going to do. Its not a safe bet but I just want something different than the usual intel core upgrade. And if its shait, I can still upgrade with intel.

I'm getting a Skylake i3 Nuc though for video streaming and emulators.
