Quote:
Total Annihilation is set in the far future in the midst of a galactic war, with battles taking place on the surface of planets and moons. The efforts of the player are centred around constructing a defensive base and an offensive force, and conquering opponents. The player also is concerned with gathering resources, reconnaissance and stealth, and evaluation of units and terrain. Battles take place against AI in a story-driven campaign, or against other players in a skirmish mode.

One of the best real time strategy games ever made... I believe everyone who is remotely interested in RTS games needs to check out total annihilation.
While there is the *spiritual successor* Supreme Commander, it's just not the same, and total annihilation has quite some advantages of it's own.

It has 2 addons that add a large amount of additional multiplayer maps as well as single player campaign maps and units.
In addition to that, you can download insane amounts of user created units and maps online.
When I last checked there were already over a thousand units or something that you could download and play with and I honestly have no idea how many maps are out there, but there's a lot!

It also featured an online campaign where you chose a faction and fight over planets, which was later copied by a bunch of other games like Commander and Conquer Tiberian Sun I believe.

I think what I liked most about TA was the fact that you could have HUGE battles with hundreds of units and that it allowed you to do all kinds of crazy strategies and tactics with air, ground and sea units (like in SupCom), all at once.

There's also that remake of it using the UT2003 engine or something.
I believe it's multiplayer only, but not sure, and I think I'll have to check it out.

This is indeed the best rts ever created. I agree if you're a fan of rts's and never played TA then you need to acquire it as fast as possible.
Spring is an open source engine and is multiplatform. Many Total Annihilation mods and the original Total Annihilation has been ported to it.

What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue to battle on ravaged planets, their hatred fueled by over four thousand years of total war. This is a fight to the death. For each side, the only acceptable outcome is the complete elimination of the other.

Copied it from google but i used to know it from the heart. That was one fucking great intro.

I liked the arm the best. Just the sound of the peewees fire. And the spider tank always seemed like a waste of unit until i learned the tactics behind it and never left without it in "advanced games".
Brings back so much great memories. The arm hammerhead (i think) and the core counterpart, so great
actually all units were so nice and unique back then (except fot the core basic tank, ugly as hell:p)

This retro section is awesome, all these games and all these memories (be it good or bad)

together with stacraft which i only played a year later or so its the best rts that ever was. You cant really improve on anything other than the graphics.

I remember thinking one of the sides was a bit overpowered (dont remember which one) and even if i would remember, it propably was bullshit cause i was 11 at the moment and didnt know so much about tactics as i do now

I remember the first time i saw this, i was at a LAN and i was going past a guy i knew. I was getting ready to pack up and go home but he booted up this game called Total Annihilation. The graphics blew me away, it was absolutely gorgeous and it forced me to bug him after the LAN to give me a copy Razz

I love TA but personally i think Starcraft is better and games like Dune 2 (that started the RTS thing) are higher in my personal book. But overall i agree, if you like RTS games Total Annihilation is a game you should have on your list of games to play.

I always thought this kicked this shit out of Starcraft personally.
I never understood why Starcraft got so much praise and TA just kinda didn't take off like Stracraft did.

I liked Starcraft, but I thought TA was leaps and bounds above as far as graphics and strategy.

This just released on GoG for $ 5.99 with all the expansion packs. You get one installer file and it installs all the Total Annihilation content and expansion, the soundtrack will play as well when you play the game as the original version did on older Windows.
It's insanely good value for the best RTS ever, with one of the most epic soundtracks as well.
Of course theres no DRM either so you can install it in as many places as you want. LAN anyone? Smile

It's not that bad. I thought the game mainly suffered from very undefined terrain and units and buildings that all looked pretty similar but that was a gripe I always had with it. It was one of the first games where terrain actually played a large role in strategy.
