I'm not a fan of Bethesda games since they've all been the same trash gameplay and nothing's really changed since Morrowind (might just go back and play that).

Anything else out and about I may have missed over the years? I'd like a huge map to explore, unique areas to visit, hidden weapons etc.

Kinda started playing Kingdoms of Amalur and only an hour into it or so but so far there isn't anything open though I've been told different.

Surprisingly few contenders to the throne, and depending on your tolerance of eurojank, not too many can really be recommended. Gothic 1 and 2, to a lesser extent 3 too, and Risen are all solid. Two Worlds wasn't particularly well-received, but IMO they were alright when you're desperate for that open world fix. Divinity 2 you might like, too.

Played it, own 2 physical copies, beat it, loved it but isn't really "open world". It's pretty restricted where you go.

Divine Divinity is a must play imo, very inspired by the mother of all open world RPG's, Ultima 7 (which hasnt aged too well).

Gothic series - Pretty sure I played it.
Risen series - Just installed it.
Witcher series - Only liked the first one, hated the 2nd one haven't bothered with the 3rd.
Borderlands series - own them played them they suck.

Pillars of Eternity - Haven't heard too much as if it was good or not.
Celestian Tales: Old North - Never heard of it.
I Shall Remain - Never heard of it.
Dark Souls 2 - hardley open world and is the biggest clunkiest pile of crap I've ever played
Dragon Age: Origins - played it own it beat it loved it

Baldurs Gate 1+2 Enhanced Editions - Still play BGII every now and then.
Legend of Grimrock 2 - haven't touched it yet, not really an open world RPG as far as I know
Wasteland 2 - didn't bother, heard it was one of those stupid RPGs where you go there to kill 10 chickens and go back for your reward.
Divinity: Original Sin - LOVE IT, sadly I lost my 60 hour game save and haven't been able to get back into it.
Bound by Flame - never heard of it.
Demonicon meh

i remembered i actually enjoyed rift, mmo with exploring, it has fun hidden areas with puzzles that give xp and loot, decent gfx n story and first 50 levels where a blast. nice community and good grouping. U could consider it open world. same for guildwars and guildwars 2

http://aggronaut.com/2013/07/16/rift-puzzles-and-cairns-by-level/

which reminds me i need to use my wildstar key from humble bundle before it gets obselete Smile

DD is better in my opinion but yeah, that's all it is, my opinion. And that is for the simple fact that it's nowhere near as overwhelming (which is my main issue with OS), content is nicely spread out.

Don't really have what else to recommend apart from what's already been recommended, but yeah... PLAY DIVINITY 2!

Fallout 4
 Spoiler:

While we're at it, Risen 3 is immensely better than 2, so if you can get your hands on it, do it. If you like the first one after you played it ofc.

How far back and what type are we talking about? Don't know if you've played all the old big name RPGs.

Divine Divinity is indeed very good.

Dragon's Dogma will be released in a month. Though the world isn't huge or anything.

Might & Magic games. Especially 4, 6 and 7.

Darklands if you can stomach the UI and graphics. It has the best setting in any RPG ever!

Wizardry 6-8. 8 being the easiest to get into.

Ultima 7.

Betrayal at Krondor.

Realms of Arkania series. Don't bother with the HD remake.

Albion is pretty good.

Summoner?

- Risen should keep you busy for a while. It's solid except for the rushed final part (if you liked Gothic, you'll like that one as well). If you want more (be advised!) Like Harry said, you can skip the second one and go straight to Risen 3 which is in fact a Risen 2.5.
- Even if you're not a fan, I'd give TW3 a chance. pls! It's definitely a huge step forward if compared to the 'limited' second game, you'll find plenty of areas to explore, contracts to do, weapons to find, a damn fine writing, naked ladies! and so on.
- You liked Fallout 1&2, so there's a 97% chance that you'll like Underrail too. It's completely open, you don't even have maps/indicators..just try not to get lost looking for nuts.
- Pillars is openworld-ish, as in, you have many accessible areas, but they're disconnected, as per tradition when it comes to this sub-genre. If you like BG, you should give it a try in my opinion.
- The Age of Decadence isn't open world, but it's open when it comes to the interactions with characters/choice->consequence system. I'd suggest you to play the official demo first.

Actually play the demo of each one of these first because one man's gold is another man's manure xD. Then eventually push the buy button #noragrets

edit: great stuff in there Djaoni!

I also disliked Witcherina 2, 3 is a lot better. Still has shit combat, but I'd even recommend it for the baron quest alone. Smile

I loved Witcher 2 (in retrospective it was clunky as hell), but Witcher 3 is a totally different beast. No wonder it will win the Game of the Year award here at nfohump.

Keep in mind that, as with all witcher games, you are Geralt. You can distribute skillpoints etc but mainly your gear determins your power Smile

How come nobody mentioned... wait for it... VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE - BLOODLINES? I know it's not really open world (like some already mentioned times), but still a great game. Also with the new Star Wars movie, I kind of want to replay both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Smile

Darklands is awesome!

And I say it as someone who played it after BG series, not at the time it was released in mid 90ties.

I swear, if you mod Gothic II with L'hiver mods textures (textures only, since the full mod changes the game too much imo) and the DX11 patch, the game feels like almost new, once you readapt to the controls.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I take a ship to Morrowind once a few years. My last playthrough took me about 140 hrs to finish most of it. It should be way more for new players, but after all this time I know where to find required items, places or NPCs Smile

Darklands was the first game i played on PC, together with Prince of Persia, good memories Smile I remember my friends thinking i was nuts selling my Amiga 500 and buying a "boring PC" (i knew it had to be the future for gaming on computers).

The 2 Dark Sun games were awesome too.
