1. Underrail
2. Invisible Inc.
3. Age of Decadence
4. STASIS
5. Dying Light (the dumb AAA game I had the most fun with this year, closely followed by GTA V, Mad Max and Witcher 3)
Honorable mentions:
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (moved it off the list instead of to the 5 spot to have more genre variety)
Dirt Rally
A bunch of small RPGs(Serpent in the Staglands, Voidspire Tactics, AntharioN and Telepath Tactics to mention a few)
The aforementioned dumb AAA games.

Dying Light
Dirt Rally
Witcher 3
MGSV
Can't even think of a 5th and tbh MGSV was very disappointing but the gameplay was good enough to make the list.

1. Witcher 3
2. Life is Strange
3. Technobabylon
4. Dirt Rally
5. Pillars of Eternity
Witcher wins by a huge margin. I honestly wasn't expecting much from it because W2 was such a disappointment for me. And initially I didn't see much in W3 as well, then it all opened up and blew me away.
Played GTA way back on ps3. Great game, but I saw nothing new in it so I barely touched it on PC. Technobabylon and Life is Strange were ok, nothing special. And Dirt Rally is still a bit too new, so I don't know where to put it. While Pillars are here simply for it's combat and rpg mechanics.
Monstrous disappointments: Fallout 4, Project CARS, Age of Decadence, Civilization: Beyond Earth.

This was a good year despite the traditional amount of drama surrounding our poor PCs, and companies betraying us more than in a Game of Thrones episode.
My list started off as a top 5 and ended up being a major clusterfuck as per usual, but I can't help it
1) The Witcher 3 (seven months have passed, and after ridiculous amounts of hours I'm still roaming the Geraltlands, playing Gwent and morbidly savouring the game to the point that I don't want the journey to end. I like it that much, almost like a damn sweet curse)
2) SOMA (the perfect blending of narrative and atmospheric first person immersion, that tickled and indecently aroused my nanomachines)
3) Pillars of Eternity (reaching the same heights as the unforgettable giants of the past was frankly an impossible task, but the game did its homework well. Old-school isometricsauce in this world is always a reason for happiness)
4) Ori and the Blind Forest (the game that gave me bad feels, good feels and angry feels, but more importantly a truckload of undiluted platforming fun)
5) GTA V (if only the narrative were half as good as the thriving, amazing city, we'd be talking about a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it was "just" a solid GTA game, but definitely the one that I enjoyed the most gameplay-wise)
The many honorable mentions (without counting the various remasters/remakes)
- DEX (2D, cyberpunksauce, inspired, witty and fun to play..my body was fully satisfied)
- Dying Light (as someone who already enjoyed the Dead Island games, this was like a dose of adrenaline mixed with happiness)
- The Age of Decadence (the RPGist RPG that you can roleplay, in a completely unconventional yet traditional manner)
- Fallout 4 (what could have been - the game. And despite the paper-thin depth and neverending amount of flaws, I enjoy playing it..and modding it, and waiting, rinse and repeat)
- LISA (the weirdest and most insane RPG that I've ever played, intended as a compliment)
- Stasis (old-school isometric adventure game, with amazing atmosphere and decent puzzles..what year is it!?)
- Mad Max (the game that had everything to amaze, but preferred to play safe and "just" entertain. Which is not a bad thing, on the contrary)
- Hotline Miami 2 (clunky, more convoluted than the first one, and still damn addictive. dat music doe)
- Technobabylon (always count on the Wadjetmen when it comes to proper adventure games)
- Dirt Rally (Codemasters pulled off the best rally game of our generation, one year ago this would have been a headline from The Onion)
- Shadowrun Hong Kong (more Shadowrun is never a good thing, said no one ever. Not as great as Dragonfall, but good enough)
- Cities Skylines (the modern Simcity that we all deserved)
- Rocket League (pretty sure it qualifies as drug, I am now trying to stay away from it since it was ruining my life, but I know that I won't resist).
(Haven't found the time to play Batmen and Metal Gear Solid V yet, I only did a few missions. I'll get there *soon* *ish*)
As for the failures, the list would be overwhelming so maybe it's better to omit it xD

Well, no surprise on my list:
1. Witcher 3 - nothing to add. Right now I feel it is the best game I have ever played overall.
2. Pillars of Eternity - great, great, great RPG
3. meh

1► The Witcher 3 : For all the CDPR advertising lies and bullshit, it was still well made, good looking, fun, HUGE with lots to do and see, well thought out and with interesting stories as well.
2► Life Is Strange : Once you get past the fact its a game about teenage lesbians, its ridiculously engrossing and well told.
3► Soma : Fantastic atmosphere and gripping story, unfortunately tainted somewhat by the bad/cheating monster AI and usage.
4► Sunless Sea : Hard to believe it came out this year, I almost forgot it was a 2015 game. BEAUTIFUL visuals, creative and fantastic stories and characters, dripping in dense and gloomy atmosphere, with a surprising amount to see and do.
5► Dying Light : A genuine surprise for how utterly fun it made zombie murdering again.

1. The Witcher 3
2. GTAV
3. PoE
And, as a honorable mention: The Talos Principle, that came out in december 2014 though.
This thread makes me realize how much I've been playing and replaying classics and older games this year, when I even had the time to play anything.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
