I have an Nvidia 770 in my machine, all was absolutely fine until yesterday when games started locking up. Obviously I thought it was a heat issue, so I took the card out and had a look, no dust or other obvious issues, fans are all running fine.

I have now started running MSI Afterburner and keeping the fans on 100& when playing games, so far so good. However they are bloody noisy and it's a pain to have to manually set them to run at such a speed when I fancy playing a game.

So, apart from dust what else could cause this very sudden issue? I have read up on of course and as I suspect drivers are thought to be a common fault so I rolled back my drivers but that made no difference. If it's not heat what else could cause this issue? It seems to lock up at about 80c, which to me seems bloody hot, however I do not know what the temp was before this issue arose. And it quite possibly could have been running at that and hotter for years.

If a card is about to die would this be a sign of that? Can anyone suggest a better application to manage the speed, also any other settings I can try on MSI Afterburner?

At the moment I cannot afford a new card so that's a no until after Xmas at least.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks

How old is your 770 and from which manufacturer?
Sounds more like the thermal paste on the cooler is not good anymore. If you don't have any warranty anymore, just remove the cooler to check it out.

Yeah it is out of warranty, I thought about the paste, but wondered if anything else could cause games to lock up, and as I said I was not sure of the temp before I used the above application. Also, would it suddenly start having issues? Before yesterday no problems at all, so it was not a gradual thing.

Thanks

I doubt it's a software problem. Though maybe your voltage settings got fucked. You should compare your current settings with the factory default ones - including core and memory clocks.

Also how warm gets your CPU? Maybe there is some problem in your whole case, not just the GPU.

Using CPUID to monitor temps. Playing Witcher 3 for a few hours, max CPU temp is 79c. As I said above I have never bothered monitoring temps before, so I have no clue if they have always been that hot. Nothing on my system is over clocked so I assume my card is running at factory spec. To be honest I am not too sure how to change the clock speeds etc.

That CPU is getting too hot man. grinhurt
It really should not go higher than 70°C. Seems like the thermal paste on your CPU cooler isn't good anymore either. Smile
Or your whole case cooling is fucked up. Are the case fans free of dust and working?

And check your GPU clocks/voltage in MSI Afterburner. Compare to the values of your manufacturer.
