They are only legal when they are fresh. You are right though about the fact that they are stronger when they are dried!

Psilocybin mushrooms are only illegal in the UK if they are dried and prepared for taking. You can pick them yourself (they grow all over the place) and, providing you eat them raw, it's perfectly legal although I think the government are making moves to change this.
I had some really good experiences with them when I was younger but the last few times I took them they had really a weird effect and I ended up having some kind of siezures so I stopped taking them. The problem in my experience (from myself and watching others) is that they can take you to the dizzying heights of heaven or to the lowest depths of hell depending on your subconsious mood and you never know which way it'll be (can you tell what mood you're in, subconsiously?) until it's way too late. My advice is simply this: experiment but be careful, they're not for everyone and the effects can be unpredictable.
BTW, I've never bought them from a shop but if you took 40 grams then they must be very weak indeed. When I used to pick and prepare them myself, I'd take about 2-5 dried grams as a normal dose or 5-7 if I wanted to get really trashed. 40 grams of real hand picked mushrooms would seriously fuck you up.
I find LSD far more enjoyable as a hallucinogen and much easier to deal with than mushrooms. Once you've taken it once, you know pretty much where you stand and it's a lot easier to control if everything goes wrong you just need and experienced tripper around to help get your head in the right place.

The 45 grams I took were mexican or mexicana or something. They aren't the best but they're pretty strong and they weren't dried when I took them. I've also heard about people picking mushrooms but heard they were pretty shit strength/quality.

Picking mushrooms is really dangerous except for the experts, because it's really hard to see the difference and we all know that most mushrooms are poisoned.

It's not dangerous if you know what you're looking for. My friends and I picked and took them every season for over 10 years and never had any problems until recently and that was more to do with my state of mind and other substances I had started using. The problem most people have is getting the Liberty Cap and the Death Cap mixed up due to the fact that they don't know how to tell them apart but it's easy enough if you just look up the differences in a botany book.
The really dangerous stuff is Fly Agaric and it's easy to spot as it looks like a fairy story style red toadstool with a large flat top and white spots. It's supposed to be the best experience but is highly lethal. Basically, the dosage has to be specific or you're dead.
I've never tried the mexican type so I can't really comment on that but if they're legal to buy in the shops then they musn't be that dangerous although I would think 45 grams would still get you well trashed.

45 grams of any kind of shrooms you buy in the shop will get you very trashed!
The most heavy once I ever bought and ate where the so called hawaiian ones.
They are (dried) very small but carry a heavy puch!

I don't like to drink them.
Just simply eating them and getting it over with.
Gotta be carefull with making tea out of it though...you better not put other herbs in that tea with them, because some herbs can greatly enhance the effect!
I know that that sounds good but you don't wanna end up in a bad trip, believe me

You're not wrong there mate. I've only had a couple of bad trips in my time but they rank top among the worst experiences I've ever had.
We always just used standard tea from the shop and it seemed to work fine. Eating them wasn't really an option as I could never get around the horrible taste. The first time I took them I was quite young and didn't know you could brew them up so I just ate about 100 of them and was violently sick from the taste. I don't even like normal mushrooms in food so I'd just make sure I put in plenty of milk and sugar in to get rid of the taste as much as possible. It's impossible to completely get rid of that earthy, fungus taste but it makes them just about bearable for me. Some of my friends don't seem to mind but I'm a fussy eater anyway.

oh cmon, its really not that hard.
i dont know, maybe it is because my parents used to take me out to pick some in the fall, due to living close to the forest, so i have some knowledge about it. but i have a really hard time seeing how hard it can be...
i think most swedes knows at least what can be picked for food and what can not. and it doesnt take an expert to find the right ones for druguse. the psylosibyn (sp?) mushrooms are very easy to see apart from other mushrooms.

Made that mistake once before I knew...the 3 of us ate a whole box of chocolate...that was heavy man!
