So... I really wasn't enjoying myself with the game until yesterday. While the crafting system is very cool in concept, it kinda killed the game for me (and sadly I saw it coming already when it was announced).
Loot felt completely trivial due to it and of all the unique gear you can aquire, 95% of them aren't even truly unique because you can get pretty much most of these effects on random legendary drops.
This whole dilemma made me question why I should even explore and especially loot stuff... but I digress.
The solution was to restart the game and just not spec into the crafting perks (or at least one point in each). Now the fucking game made a whole 180° on me.
Still, this leaves an foul aftertaste in my mouth because it's such an aritificial solution. They should've just locked the mods behind blueprints or something you gotta find or let you "study" newly aquired mods to being able to build them... but that's just me.
I just had little to no sense of character progression before.

This beats any other game in this regard. The building mechanics are polished (even though the UI is shit) and I love how it all functions.
Their mistakes for me, in regards to the building/crafting, was giving us little use for it. We need more attacks, more interesting things to do with it all, and some cause and effect.
|
They need to have a way to have floors or buildings level the ground so it's not floating.
But yeah we need to have things like having more qualities to a settlement based on settler skills. So have settlers have skills like scientist or so and that would somehow impact settlement prestige and have them be the ones who craft weapons for you so it doesn't feel like you're the only one doing anything.
Currently settlements can be fun, but rely too much on imagination. So it quickly loses its gimmick.

Building mechanics are polished? Are we playing the same game?
You can't create fences properly, especially the corners.
Land has to be 100% flat for anything to look good, otherwise it floats a couple of centimetres in the air and doesn't snap properly.
You lack the ability to remove foliage or skeletons so everything looks fugly.
No terramorphing to remove holes or make the terrain flat, which would solve the above mentioned problem.
You can't even create a greenhouse if you wanted, it's not like you can move the ground texture somewhere else so you're forced to put it in a few set places.
Hopefully mods can fix that, alongside with what you already mentioned since settlements serve almost no purpose now.

Yeah foliage and other items are annoying. Doorways are kinda funny. And they need a better way to show aoe of electric pylons when it comes to lights.

Just a few things noted about settlements if others haven't noticed:
1. Water that isn't used by your settlers is placed into the workshop, worth about 6 caps. More if you pump charisma. Same story about crops.
2. If you produce corn+tatos+mutfruit+water you can manufacture adhesive by cooking starch (adhesive is necessary for the majority of crafting)
3. Shopkeepers are good source of ammunition (and fusion cores) and make a bit of money. They provide caps per day placed in the workshop. Shops will only generate money if you have idle settlers or supply caravans running afaik.
4. Idle settlers will scavenge for materials automatically (placed in workshop). I'm not sure if they specifically look for what you have tagged for search. Settlers assigned to the scavenger job will do this also.
5. Brahmin improve overall productivity of your settlement. I'm not sure if there is benefit to having more than one (or if you can even have more than one). Dogs provide +happiness.
6. Some shops increase happiness (and therefore productivity), apparently you need two or three level 3 shops to max happiness.
7. If you get attacked by Synths and the defense quest does not end, use the console, click a synth and type resurrect, then murder it again to complete the quest. Failing a defense is pretty damn harsh.
8. The settler limit is 10+charisma. Companions also count against this limit. You can use drugs to temporarily raise the maximum and send more settlers to one location, but I think it'll revert when you visit it.
Bethesda really need to explain half of this shit in the game.

Not so sure if scavenging stations work. Or if they do, they're just not worth the resources to build from what I've seen so far

I thought I could handle the humongous amount of interesting mods getting released everyday, but now it's getting so overwhelming that I'm contemplating the quit&waitsomemonths procedure for the fixed/perfected experience *
(Either that or I'll just ignore everything - except for the inventory-related ones..those are vital. As for the dialogues, well they should be entirely rewritten so the modding can only do so much xD)
On a side note, as expected, as soon as I touched Diamond City's soil, I started experiencing moments of cinematic framerate. Had to put the shadows distance on medium to fix it, Gamebryionic!
*not that I'll finish the game before the end of 2016 anyway

Yep. Buying ammo for it everytime I visit shop. That and similar pistol, and have not touched any other weapon in a while now.

Hmm. Odd. I have 18 settlers in castle, but I have only +6 charisma.

Silver Shroud question:
Spoiler: | How long do you have to listen to the radio? Been listening it for like 30 minutes, but nothing happens. This is after killing Wayne Delancy.
"So Wayne Delancy is dead. It's time to listen to Kent on radio"..
Nothing happens. |
Second, game stutters badly and has huge fps drop inside small room, while runs smoothly outside (and most of big buildings). Visited Vault xx yesterday, just corridors but the performance was abysmal. Dropped below ~30.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Yeah there's a lot of.. oddity surrounding it.

I think all the vaults run like shit?
There's some kinda effect they're using that is totally butchering the frame rate.
edit: Just had an awesome 3 or 4 way battle in the middle of nowhere.
Ran into a deathclaw while roaming a junk yard (was wearing my power armor thankfully), then while I was fighting that (much backpedal+jet and frag mines), I ran into a raider in power armor with a dog.. and then a legendary razorlurk, and moments later a legendary glowing bloodbug.. and a friendly mr handyman. In hindsight I probably should have called for minuteman assistance, but I never got enough time to actually pull out the flare gun.
At this rate I'm gonna run out of power cores, because I can't survive without my power armor anymore haha..

Alot of the building issues can be solved by building foundations first.

Oh, by the way...did anyone else realize at the time, the the first time in the series history (we don't talk about FO:BOS), it was not Ron Perlman who did the intro narration?

How far am I through the main story?
Spoiler: | I just completed the mission where the detective led me to dude who kidnapped my son's house, and I gave the dog the scent. Tracked down the dude and killed him |

The culmination of that quest will be the end of act 1
(Which will unlock a couple of new events.)

some spoilery questions:
Spoiler: | - I found the railroad, but I'm afraid to take any quests from them because I might become enemies with everyone else. Can I do some missions for them before committing myself?
- Same dilemma with the brotherhood. I stumbled upon palasin Danse following a distress signal, cleared a propulsion research facility together, now a big-ass mothership came in and I should report to him.
Does the game give me any warning before starting a quest that means committment to a faction? |

You're fine.
Spoiler: | I was a member of all 4 factions and it was fine until a certain point, where I was made an enemy of Brotherhood of Steel, but there was a prompt with "By doing this quest, you'll become a permanent enemy of Brotherhood of Steel. Do you want to continue? Yes/no. |
