just stay away.
phones may be good, but you get a smartphone for apps. |
dafuq are u talking about? what is missing on the wp store? sure it hasnt 1000000 zillion games, but who needs that? you must be one of those who never had a windows phone but just hatin cause is ms, right?
btw every phone which has wp 8.1 (so every wp8 phone, think htc users dont have it officially but can use the dev preview option) will get win10. its gonna be an awesome ecosystem with the desktop win10 |
i had a lumia top of the line.
few months later, win 8 launched, no upgrade for my top phone. just because.
if you are not in a well estabilish country, you canot buy apps. i had to make a fake account putting my location to uk. people which release game dont release for less suported country's i officially got angry birds after like 6 months. oficial pathces on their oficial fucking top of the line phone were 1-2-3 months old.
when in the end they decided to somehow suport my country, could not change country in account, no matter what i trowed at them, id, passports/whatever... for example blizzard changed my country without issues, they just asked for an id. took like 15 minutes.
no voip suport on win 7. none whats so ever.
i had a payed (mine) developer account. microsoft just convinced me to stop trying to make software/apps for them.
and apps ? i had to use 2-3 apps to get the same functionality like one apps on ios/andriod. maybe now there are more mature, but 1 year ago was still crap.
and i can tell you more and more about how crap is microsoft store and support and some insider info from a developer hell life, but i doubt you really care.

tbh every big missing features where fixed in the last year, and even before it was really fast and stable mobile os. period. theres nothing against it. ok it has a few "flaws", but most of them are because of the os' restrictions for apps (all are run in a sandbox) which is good for security reasons. i never felt i needed some kind of jailbreak (other to android, i wouldnt use any android phone without root). ms has done a great job and is still improving wp8.1, and that besides the wp10 incoming next year. just have a look at cortana, even in beta (or here in germany in alpha) status it has more really helping features as siri (and please dont talk about the google thing, its hilarious)
so please, before bashing wp -> try one
@frogster: ok its bad for you to buy a wp7.5 flagship phone close to launch of wp8 cause it wasnt clear at first if the old ones could run 8. bad luck, nothing else. same with every other mobile os, most of them dont get the new os versions. such things as change store region is possible now, has nothing to do with your live account, you can just change the region in your phone, reboot, and use us store for example. they did a few bad things with the first iteration of wp7. but with the crossplattform apps now (windows store and windows phone store) and the upcoming win10 store its much more convenient. im glad the rumors that ms is working on a android app emulator for wps were not true, that would have made the store dead. but in the past month many major apps were released or updated to a proper state

Well she ended up with the Xperia Z3 compact.
Nifty little device, had to do a transfer of data from her old to the new phone and got jelly trying that one It's about the right size, not too small and not overly big.
I ended up with her Xperia Ray, my first 'smart'phone. Kinda miss the keyboard on my old Samsung, but that phone was dieing so had to replace it.
Just spend 3 hours rooting, flashing and putting Jellybean on it. Mostly time wasted due to retards not having a coherent or detailed guide going on *rage*. Ah well, in the end it worked out. But I feel I could have done it in an hour if the guides weren't all over the place and skipping steps.
Anywho, thanks for the suggestions and the advice (even if she was deaf to it at times), twas much appreciated!

I'm currently on the fence between S5 Active and Z3.
S5 is the same as my current S3 and has better protection, Z3 has a better camera, but I'll have to change the sim card from mini to micro..

Why not go down the iPhone route? I was also bent on using android until a year ago or so when I noticed how much better iOS is on my gfs iphone. It's faster and more stable even compared to the s6. I had s5 before this. Plus the build quality on them is way better.
Main PC : I7 12700, MSI Ventus RTX 4090 24gb, Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED

Derpsole : Playstation 5 disc edition, Ninty Switcherino
TV+audio: LG CX 65" / Sonos ARC + SL ones + Sonos sub 3

price, 5s costs 100eur more than s5a/z3 here, 200 with 6
and I don't like flashy stuff that other people buy for social status
also I have the impression that apple have the habit of locking their stuff, using only certain apps, itunes and so on

Lol faster and more stable?! What a load of bullshit, maybe compared to stock, but even than I would say that both are equal.
Build quality is just as good as the rest these days, plus you had a shitty plastic Samsung, no wonder you find the iPhone build so "good"

Build quality of a Z3 is just fine, and nowhere in the realms of a Samsung (if you are basing on that).
I found it more responsive and less bloated than the Iphone's we tried in the store. +You pay less for the brand name and you are less restricted from the get go.
I'm not really into the whole smart phones and pads tho. I'm mostly PC orientated so the only time I see a use for it is: travelling with public transportation or boring social gatherings so... not really worthwhile for me.
The very little times I used her z3, was nice and less frustrating than what I experienced before with smart phones. That being said: go to shops and try the things out yourself. You put more time into it, but in the end you get what you like the most.

Yes, faster and more stable. I've had both for a lot of time in which i got to compare, most people who diss apple's products do so from ignorance.
And only recently samsung improved their design, don't you find it funny how they used plastic for their top of the line phones for so long? Should say a lot by itself.

More responsive and less bloated i find quite hard to believe. The responsive time because everything is instant on my / my gfs iphone and less bloated well.. because iOS is as simple as it gets.
But not gonna argue, just thought you hadn't considered this. Good luck with your future phone

I'm not here to argue either, just sharing what I experienced that day with the models being next to each other and having used them within seconds from each other. Besides everyone has different sensitivities to begin with.
But that being said: He should try the different models himself... because at the end of the day: it's always better to judge yourself when it comes to how things perform. He can always have a different experience than me.
And no matter your prejudice give them all a chance to experience the differences.

So without knowing anything, you are already making assumptions?
I've had Apple devices, I've had Windows mobile devices, I've had Android devices and so fucking on, I've tried most devices out there already for extended times, better yet, in the early days, I even developed for a few devices, so yes. I know what the fuck I'm talking about when I say that Android (when tweaked) is FAR superior to IOS. While at stock, both are quite equal now.
As for the build quality, twice you only talk about Samsung, so Android phones =/= Samsung for you?!
I've had always HTC devices as my main phone, the quality in builds of other manufacturers is picking up due to HTC their commitment for their build and thus opening others their eyes that the cheap plastic shit or glass shit phones are basically a ripoff compared to the build quality HTC put out.
So idk why you keep mentioning Samsung here? I'm talking about your whole Apple vs Android phones argument, not specific Samsung.
So my point still stands, these days, the differences between both are very little, with Android (phones) having an edge over IOS/Apple.
But hey, most people justify their overpriced shit with ANYTHING they can come up with

I'm sorry sausje i only consider Apple and Samsung when talking about phones just like NVIDIA / AMD.. intel/amd.. rest are not worth it if you have money imo.
Also spec-wise/performance almost every phone should be shitting on apple's products but that isn't happening. Funny innit? iOS is great like that even though it's not even close to being as flexible as Android.
PS: i know my comparison to the other brands doesn't make sense cause there's no other options in those cases however that's how i see it and most people i know share the same view.

And they are, the biggest difference factor here is that for Android, it has to work on god knows how many different hw types, while Apple knows what hardware they have to design the software for, so ofc they can squeeze every single last drip out of the old phones.
That said tho, if you look at those "realworld benchmarks" video's, you can see that Apple is starting to fall behind in performance and multitasking. But yeah, designing an OS for a known type of hardware or for virtually ALL hardware is a big difference. The old consoles showed that.

Damn. I need a new phone and I want the best one, but I don't know shit about phones. I do want an android one though that's about it. I don't care about budget because I carry a phone around everywhere and I want it to be good.
Anyone bought a phone recently that's done research on the newest phones to make a relatively qualified choice between all of the supposed "premium" phones?
I've been thinking about Nexus 6P or Sony Xperia Z5 Premium...
The new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ has that curved screen which doesn't impress me at all.

maybe look into the lumia 950 xl if you want a big phone? coming out next week afaik and in most markets you get the continuum dock free with it (sadly only with the xl version) if you purchase this year (it has a app pre installed to claim it and they send it directly to you)

Honestly, the only real premium phones are HTC's, rest still feel rather cheapish IMO.
Anyway, without your needs, we cannot really advice you unless you name a few features that are a MUST for you to have on a new phone.

A bit on the large side, but means that it should serve great in the car as a GPS, providing you have a mount and such for it. And yeah, it's "chinese crap", but so are all of the other brands. Everything is manufactured in China these days and are just as good. If anything, the other crap brands like Samsung are full of bloatware.

as i said, they are not crap. but the problem with the imported phones (besides the extra import tax you have to pay) is: if something is wrong with them, good luck contacting the chinese oems. even if you will get a repair service or replacement device yuo will most likely have to wait ages for it
