Fast travel (you could call it editing/jump-cutting) makes the game appear bigger than it is. The more you go on foot, the more you connect the dots. If you have played Skyrim with a no-fast travel mod you'll know the world is a fair size, though not as big as it appears if you fast travel a lot. If you run across the map from one end to the other, the world shrinks in your perception.
There was a guy on Reddit, (not sure if its posted here) that analyzed the official footage to draw up the map. Not sure how that went, but the side-effect was that you saw that the vault, the old town, the gas station and where you met Preston Garvey are all in the same spot.
