what do you guys think about it?, i bought a hd6950 1GB 2 years ago or something like that, now i have the possibility to buy a Nvidia GeForce GT 630 2Gb Gigabyte for 30€ used. should i sell my hd6950 1 GB and buy the Nvidia GeForce GT 630 2Gb Gigabyte?

No chance, you'll lose substantial performance - the 630 is a budget card in every possible way and I'd put it at around half the power of the 6950 Smile Sell your 6950 and get a 7950/R9-280 (or an R9-270/270x if you can find one, not as powerful as the 7950 as they're technically 78xx rebrands but still much more capable than the 6950) and you'll see a hell of a nice leap, or from the nV side a 670/770 if you can manage to find one cheap enough.

please god NO!

the 6950 sux yes but if you want to upgrade cheap try to get a used card like a 770 or 280x or a HD 7950 which is basicly the same. the gtx should go for less than 100 euros, the 280x slightly above

That's a bit on the expensive side, but I don't really know what your markets are like. In America the card goes for $125 (lucky fucking bastards Very Happy) and in the UK it's £104 (which is $160) -- so €140 seems high to me, definitely not what I'd call a "deal" :\ However! Even the 750ti won't really be all that much of an upgrade from a 6950, in fact.. off the top of my head, the 6950 should actually still be faster.

The 750ti will be 5% faster in some and 5% slower in some other games. It uses less than 50% of the power though but 140€ was the price of that card months ago. Total ripoff! Pax wanted to sell me his 750ti for like 60€ or so...

If you want a marked upgrade from your 6950, the best bet is to scour the used market and aim for at least a 7950/R9-280x or higher, and a 770 or higher nVidia.

Why would you buy a used nvydia card, they are shit, stuck with 2gb of memory and shit bandwidth. Get a hd7950 or better amd, better in every way.

It is just facts though. Amd cards last way better than nvidia does. Games these days use over 2GB easily, old nvidia cards dont stand a chanve really. A used 7970 is prolly cheaper and better than some crappy 770 in every way. Even a hd7950 should beat it hands down in modern games thanks to 3GB and proper memory bandwidth. Even 3GB might not be enough these days, atleast not at 1440p, making derpvidia cards even worse.

I only buy my hardware based on what is best value for money, dont care about make or model.

Oddly enough, ALL AMD hardware I've had, kinda had the urge after a year to be replaced. Could be just placebo, but I always regretted doing budget builds with AMD. Now my Intel/Nvidia setup is already alive and kicking for over 3 years and still have no plan to go and upgrade a part. Whereas with my AMD machines, I've would've upgraded 3 times already.
But that could be too because nowadays the performance increase isn't that big anymore, it's not going as fast as it was before.

Well in this case, Stige does have a point. I wouldn't recommend it in a higher price class, but considering speedgear is looking to buy a used card, a 7970 has more going for it. The obvious one is the 3 GB VRAM and a bit more bandwidth, but that's minor. Beyond that though, a 770 is a severely gimped chip. It has far less GPGPU power than a 7970 does, it has much more support for DX12 features and in general is just more suited for DX12 because it can actually do async compute. Considering a lot of stuff DX12 is GPGPU oriented, for a used and cheap card, a 7970 is a better choice than a 770, provided that you find them at equal price points. Outside this they're pretty evenly matched anyway. Unless PHYSX MOST HAPPIER DAMN!

If he had gone a class higher, then Nvidia would still be the better choice. But not in this class Wink

Except we're not talking about the 7970, but rather Stige's "AMD better in every way" attitude that is in this, and every other, thread of late Wink Though discounting DX12, the 770 is still perfectly matched with the 7970.. and even faster in a lot of cases. Regardless, given the money in hand and a choice between 7970 and 770; I'd likely go with the 7970 too, if only for the increased framebuffer, I know only too well how many shit coded games are here now with utter bullshit VRAM requirements and usages.

Doesn't excuse his attitude though
