What kind of non-compete clause is that if it is only valid for like 3 months or so? Don't these things usually last a year or two to make them effective?

Why 3 months? That clause could have been effective for years now, no?

Most of the time it's not really enforceable because if I'm a programmer, and I have to sign a non compete clause for a year, are you really telling me I'm not allowed to earn a living for a year? It won't hold up, unless you ran off to a direct competitor with your former company's latest discovery / tech.
Rant, spoilers to not waste your time.
Spoiler: | Almost all of my former coworkers signed the required non competes, didn't have a problem finding another job in the industry, in the same town. Only me and another guy didn't because at that point I was thinking this was super serious. So HR kept hounding my ass to sign the stupid non compete. I basically just told her that she'd have my resignation on her desk before I signed the non compete. Stopped bothering me.
Left that company eventually (web/software development firm that when we started, didn't have simple things like version control. Only my team has version control because I insisted, I kept bringing it up during meetings, and eventually we had Git as a policy after almost 1,5 years)., because it was shit. Don't work for people who call themselves 'technopreneurs' guys. I didn't go with the equity bs and just went with the pay that I thought I deserved. Others were not too fortunate.
TLDR: Fuck the noncompetes.

Hideo Kojima has now completely left Konami, not just Kojima Productions, and his "non-compete" clause expires in December so he can sign up with another development house or publisher if he wishes. |

There is a gold version which I believe you must S rank every mission to unlock, possibly also complete all objectives for the missions but of that I'm not certain.
