I've cancelled my XBOX One Windows Receiver pre-order and just (pre)ordered Steam Controller for total 55€ including shipping, Portal 2 & Rocket League. Smile

The way how I got this is buying some crappy CS:GO weapon skin (StatTrak™ AK-47 | Vulcan) and selling it for Steam funds. Smile

I'm not selling my pair of XBOX 360 pads so let's wait and see how good or bad this controller will be.

Really looking forward to read people feedback on the new controller after they get more used to it. I'd like to replace my aging, twice repaired, 360 pad.

Nah I'm not cancelling my order. As every other controller this one shares opinion too. I wouldn't make any final decisions before testing it properly by myself.

I really don't understand the use of this controller. The problem for people that have their pc plugged on their big TV is the absence of UI Scale and Font Settings in 90% of the games. If I want to play Civ 5 I can use my wireless mouse. The fucking problem is that the game doesn't scale, the fonts are not big enough and we rely everytime on mods to fix the damn thing.
Also good luck playing Total War games or any Paradox game on TV using the Steam Controller. The font is so tiny it's ridiculous! I wish I'm wrong but I don't think they fixed all these games to scale correctly and provide a bigger font size.
That said, there is already perfect software like Controller Companion and Pinnacle Game Profiler that does exactly the same thing as the Steam Controller by using the more ergonomic IMO X360 controller.
Am I missing something? Confused

Valve developer showing a cool idea:

Motion controlled aiming enabled only well.. when you are aiming. Thus you can have very fast movement controls and switch to more precise aiming controls on the fly.

This controller is really kind of a multitool and the community will have to come up with cool ideas like that for every single game.

@SpykeZ the streaming is nice but only real good with tbs, you will notice latency with action orientated stuff. Another cool thing is u can stream anything add to library as well, Iadd third party game and stream.

I am presuming the streaming box is just rasp pi type device with the existing streaming service right?

Ok that was the first and only interesting video about the controller.
Unfortunately everything else is false advertising by Valve. So much for " Enjoy this game on your big TV using the Steam Controller". They haven't done any change to the games to actually work on a big TV screen. The thing just emulates the mouse cursor! They're selling a "non ergonomic hardware mouse emulator" for 39.99 pounds while you can have the same results with your own controller and 1.99 pounds software. Do they think we are stupid? I guess so...

That was never going to happen. Changes to games would have to be done by the game developer/publisher, not Valve.

That's what I said. The games haven't been updated to work on HDTVs. If you go to Steam main page you'll see "Enjoy Total War: Atilla on your TV using Steam Controller". Wut?? The game is unplayable on HDTVs, the same applies to Crusader Kings and Civ 5 without font mod. Valve tries to sell a controller for couch gaming without mouse and advertises strategy games which are unplayable on HDTVs.
CA's response was that there are engine limits and for that reason they can't implement UI Scale!
Paradox's response was that they too have problems with the engine...
When I spoke to SI about the font problem in Football Manager 4 years ago they told me that they're trying to implement a font size option. They finally included the option just 1.5 years ago!

So it's basically what I predicted - a nice idea that doesn't work properly for real gaming. I think I compared it to a Wiimote and it seems that's pretty accurate. Having just bought a Wii U, I got reminded how the wiimote is good for certain games but proper playing is pretty exhausting and from the sound of it, your fingers sure are being strained while using this ...

They just emulate the mouse movement (as many software products already do) and instead of a Right Stick they have a laptop touchpad. I don't see how is that a good and innovative idea.

well for me so far I use it much more than i use the classic gamepad(which is pretty much twinstick/fighter exclusive device for me) , but that just me ....

The touchpad is much better for camera control and the mouse emulatio than the stick for me. Stick is just bad for than even with glorious awesomesauce software

What is your setup? Monitor or TV? What's the point using the controller if you're playing strategy games in front of your monitor? You will still use the k+m combination.
I played half of the DoS game using X360 controller+PGC and it was nearly perfect. It's only me maybe because I hate laptop style touchpads. After extensive use they cause more pain in the fingers than the controller sticks.

For the gabepad its mostly Laptop connected to TV on the wall above the bed and sometimes even monitor (as explained below) Very Happy Its fine for builders, turbased and even shooters after but of tweaking and getting used to (stick is unusable for camera for me) - its much better than the laptop touch-pad and its nice change after the extensive use of a mouse after work (yeah i prefer M+K but after 8 hours of extensive work i want to relax and not induce carpal tunnel)

One review I read last week mentioned your right thumb may end up being sore when you use the right pad after awhile. I'd have to borrow someone's to try out before I pick one up.

22-Way Comparison Of NVIDIA & AMD Graphics Cards On SteamOS For Steam Linux Gaming
Quote:
When it comes to the best performance-per-Watt, the GeForce GTX 970~980 was generally leading the pact.
If I were to build a SteamOS/Linux living room gaming PC today, I would likely settle for the GeForce GTX 960 or GeForce GTX 970 for a 1080p display.

If you are a devout AMD user, you'll be best off waiting.... Either for the RadeonSI+AMDGPU open-source driver stack to support enough of OpenGL 4 to support all interesting Steam Linux games at decent frame-rates, a miracle to happen for the Catalyst OpenGL Linux driver, or if AMD is able to deliver a competitive Vulkan driver in a timely manner and game developers are quick to jump on this next-generation graphics API.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=steamos-22-gpus&num=1

One example:

They only had half as many AMD cards, but damn, a 950 beats the AMD Fury on SteamOS. Embarassed

I have been messing around with the Steam Controller for a couple of days now, so here are some of my thoughts for those who want another opinion.

I was not sure what to make of it at first, but now I am really liking it.

Reason for this I think is that as a "default" controller, it's not really good, or at least it's not as good as DS4, for example. For controlling the camera I find the trackpad working as a stick worse than a proper stick (and I hate the stick for this!). Its obvious advantage is using the trackpad as a mouse, and ideally you would want do just that and keep the rest of the controls as they are for the gamepad, but unfortunately, so far, for games that are not specifically designed for steam controller with that option in mind that is not possible. You can't have both mouse and gamepad inputs active at the same time - one will block out the other, meaning you can't be moving and looking around at the same time, for example (it has a mouse "emulation" option, for trying to emulate mouse-like behavior using stick output, but it sucks and I find it largely unusable). If you take that away, it just becomes a "different" controller, with nothing really special to offer other than the grip buttons (which you can put to good use even with a standard control schemes).

However if you are willing to put some time into working out a good control scheme (or finding a good community profile), you will get a lot more out of it. The main trade-off for getting the mouse-look to work properly will be losing the analog movement option, and so far that wasn't really a huge deal.

I have been mainly using Batman as my guinea pig for various control tests and worked out a hybrid control scheme combining keyboard/mouse and gamepad inputs to pretty great effect. It makes it possible not only to have the mouse-look option, but also improve on some aspects of the default gamepad controls. I can also get back the analog controls by holding one of the grip buttons, which is useful for driving, for example.

Generally speaking, mouse-look is not bad at all, especially with gyro assist. On that note, somewhat unexpectedly, gyros are really good, and they are used for precision aiming in many profiles. In many situations I find that they actually work better than the trackpad, with "Trackpad + gyro" combo being surprisingly intuitive to use. It will never be able to compete with a proper mouse, but between that and sticks it sits much closer to the mouse leaving analog sticks far behind.

For some general negative feedback, I would agree with the A/B/X/Y button criticism in that they are a bit on the small side and mainly that they are too close together. You could probably get used to it, and often it's the muscle memory that throws you off, but it's fairly routine for me to hit the wrong button when doing it on a reflex.

On the comfort side, I don't notice any obvious issues, but I do get that feeling when I pick up the DS4 after prolonged use, so I guess that is saying something.

TL;DR
Not so great "out of the box". Really good if you are willing to work with it.
