software to copy windows install from old harddrive to new harddrive.
in a few hours im getting up and got like an hour to set it all up by then.

long story short it took me ages to install win7 in a new PC with low power celeron setup on an older 250gb sata laptop HD. windows update took 90 mins ....
i checked with hdtune and it started with 11mb/s then dipped to 0.9mb/s.
So in case harddrive is broken(?) ill try to copy it to another older harddrive i got laying around (i know not perfect solution atm).

Could there be any settings that i forgot about in bios? i have it set to AHCI and disabled the intel C state power saving stuff thats about it.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Q1900M/?cat=Manual manual shows all the possible bios settings.

Should i try other sata cables? anything else i could do?

thanks! *stressed*

For cloning / backup on Windows, I still use Acronis True Image Home.

old 250gb laptop hd is just slow as fuck and windows update process is very cpu demanding. its not unsual that a fresh w7 sp1 install takes about 90-120min for updates on those systems. dont think the hardware is broken, but u can use the clonezilla boot disc / stick to copy it (and expand the partition later if the new disc is bigger than 250gb).

BUT if you really think the hdd is broken use the oem tool to do a complete scan (will take a few hours). even copying in one hour will not work though

So if I buy an SSD I can boot from a clonezilla flash disk and clone the whole goddamn disk to the SSD and boot from that afterwards? Will Windows work correctly then?

yea, it should work normally.
just burn the clonezilla live cd, boot with it, use the option device to device,
that way you can clone from your old hdd to new ssd if you have them both hooked up.
it will take 20-40 minutes.

you can also create an image of the drive and save it on an external drive as backup.
last time i did a fresh re-format and re-install of windows, after installing all the necessary drivers and basic apps i need, i created a clonezilla image, so the next time i will just load up the image instead of re-formatting again.

hdd to sdd is a bit different but should work fine, atleast with windows 8.1 and 10. 7 doenst set the needed values by itself, there you need some handwork. in that case i would always prefer a clean install
