Thankfully my ignore list still works
I might be limited to exactly £300, no more - which is utterly annoying because the setup I was looking at is about £330.
I COULD look at an i5, but I'm somewhat reluctant to do that.
Or I could do a 4970 locked, with an H97 board. But.. that sounds quite limiting too.
Suggestions please?

What Toni said and why I said earlier to wait it out a bit since I saw you were still doubting.
30£ shouldn't take months. Slim down somewhere, buy a game or a few bundles less.

well, the i7 isn't just about HT, it has more cache as well. so it's not always HT giving the fps and frametime improvements.
it's a tough call, but IMO ultimately a 4.4-4.6 ghz i5 4690K which the z-97 mobo would easily do, would be a better choice than a 3.6ghz 4970, + you also downgrade the mobo to h instead of Z. those aren't exactly gaming durability grade mobos.
or visit a truck stop to earn that 30 pounds in a few hours
So yeah, i'd say wait, but if you can't, don't lose sleep over it. you will be getting 60 fps minimums with an overclocked 4690k in everything that the i7 can as well, and the frametimes are solid, even in witcher 3. most test sites only complain once frametimes go over 33.ms, and you will be below that no doubt.

Well for £30 more, if its the setup you want, wouldn't you be better waiting till you had the extra £30?, rather than just making do, for the sake of that amount? Hell, I'll lend ya the extra, and you can pay me back later, or rip me off, or whatever lol

Heh thanks for the offer, but I hear your interest rates are quite itchy...
I might just do it, I don't want to leave the money laying around as it would only get used for something else - that isn't acceptable
Just gotta wait for the funds to clear... I hate waiting

Assuming I can find the extra £30, I think this is probably the best I can get;
ASUS Z97-K
i7-4790k
£330.

So, as is traditional, here's some before/afters
* I forgot I had Vsync turned on at driver level, so it overrode every test As for SC, I don't know what the high FPS would be - but the fact it reached 60 is impressive in itself. And lets just discount Batman.
