I've put that phrase into the search but there were no results. Neither for H.265.

So, my point is, is this codec mature enough for HD releases to be downloaded and watched?

How is the quality compared to H.264 given the same file size? Worse? Better?

You guys have fast internet and are definitely more movie lovers than me; I'm sure plenty of you have already downloaded and tested these.

The study compared HEVC MP with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HP and showed that for HEVC MP the average bitrate reduction based on PSNR was 44.4% while the average bitrate reduction based on subjective video quality was 66.5%.

So basically ~50% better.
But this is based on reference implementation so x265 will probably be better

I'm guessing the fact that there haven't been any releases suggests that it's not mature enough.
It is also not yet supported by most mainstream players.
But if there's one place to stay up to date it's probably here: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=81

You can build the internal ffmpeg for xbmc to support it.

https://github.com/craigcarnell/xbmc/tree/ffmpeg-hevc

Wouldnt touch it myself, but I am reasonably happy with my setup and have no need for it at this point in time.

I'm all for reducing space requirements if there's no compromise in quality (which there doesn't seem to be). But the Raspberry Pi doesn't play h.265/x265, so it's no go for me.

What?

============

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'm asking because I don't know which release of "The Hunger Games Catching Fire" to download - both are around 5.5GB; one is HEVC, one is H.264.

Theoretically HEVC/H.265 should be a lot better; though judging by the screenshots, I'm not that sure.

I also wonder if the latest version of LAV decoders can play it.

Since they are just 5.5GB. Get both and compare.

Yeah. Despite having slow connection, I'll probably do just that. Pure curiosity wins.

Oh, thanks for pointing that post out. Smile

Guess I'll wait half a year before downloading something encoded in HEVC standard. Wink
