Quote: | I'm happy to confirm that the rumors about an upcoming GOG release of the original System Shock are indeed true, and you can now purchase System Shock Enhanced Edition on GOG. This is the CD version of the game, now running through a custom windows loader that has been created by Malba Tahan - basically, enhancing and incorporating his already released mods like SHLINK and the mouselook/hires mod into one complete package, featuring;
- the game runs natively under windows, no (slow) dosbox emulation
- toggle able mouselook mode (smart, auto-disables itself when the player is interacting with objects)
- higher resolution support, up to 1024*768 (able to set custom ones as well, even widescreen)
- windowed mode
- scaling smoothing/filtering
- remappable keys
- no resolution changing when entering full map
- resolution and other settings now stored outside the savegames, eliminating the need to always set them anew once a game is started
- storing the settings externally also allows the log audio to be enabled by default
- can make screenshots by hitting printscreen (stored in \res\gen)
- couple of fixes to scaling, brightness and onscreen text
This is pretty much as good as it gets without a source port or an engine clone - I have to say that I'm quite impressed what a little cooperation between the IP owners and the community can accomplish. That reminds me, the Night Dive team says hello, and thanks everyone for all the support and mods - and as a token of appreciation, five free keys have been provided, first five (registered) users posting here (asking for a key) will receive one via pm. //keys are now gone.
So, what are you waiting for? The smoothest Citadel ever awaits. |

damn them to hell. Just a few month back I played the dosbox "slow as fuck" edition
Oh well, the inevitable future playthrough once my memory synapses decay will be glorious and noot dosbox emulated.

The widescreen implementation is not good.
The 2D interface around the screen is stressed (I can deal with this) and the (pseudo-)3D action in the center is cropped ("zoomed in"). I'd rather play in 4:3 with the whole image rather than the 16:9 cropped one. Thankfully I can do just that so it's not a problem.

Yeah in the screenshots it's obvious that it is not hor+ widescreen. I hope after ppl whine about it, it will get patched.

Due to its not-really-3D nature I'm inclined to believe this is the best that the modder could and can do.
edit important to note as of today we have confirmation Night Dive Studios owns 100% of the SS IP, not just distribution rights etc. Someone needs to step up as an interested dev team and coordinate with NDS for a SS3 Kickstarter.

Wow, nice. Are the 2 games strongly related story wise?

Not strongly related, and SS2's introduction and the game itself basically tell you the backstory and everything that you need to know to enjoy if there's no knowledge of the first game. Though even if not necessary, I would recommend to play them in sequence, especially now that the SS1 veteran has received an overdose of sexy pixels and mouse love xD

Images don't do it justice, as the game already looked like this. its basically the fluidity of native windows rendering that's the biggest difference+ the smart mouse look toggling and music that now works with the native windows version.
the rest was all possible with the abandonware system shock portable.

Finally, bought. I remember finishing this on my puny 386 DX40 (low res of course) with the sound not working for some reason. I want to replay it to see what I've missed and the mouse emulation will certainly help. Still one of the best games I've played.
Having said that, I refuse to buy the System Shock 2. While the engine and art is pretty great and all (huge improvement over the first game), I can't feel being extremely disappointed with the shallow and flat story and how it all pans out. Ken Levine's writing skills are pretty overrated IMHO.
