Anyone hoping for a return to glory for AMD procs may well have to temper their expectations a little, because the main guru behind the classic powerhouse procs K7 and K8, as well as Apple's A4 and A5, has left AMD. Um. Again. His last contribution was the upcoming Zen, which is supposed to be pretty damned good, but now he's left again Sad

oh wow... Rolling Eyes

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

R.I.P AMD desktop CPU department, there has been rumours lately that microsoft is interested buying AMD, maybe that is one of the reasons Laughing

Yup, supposedly the design of Zen is completed and they're heading into production next year, so we'll see if Keller managed to recapture some of that old magic and whether Zen can truly be once more a competitive proc compared to nVidia. After that? Well... Sad

About Zen: It seems they are turning away from designs optimized for multicore scalability and back into trying to be actually fast Laughing

That Bulldozer idiocy really cost them I think.

Also, what about that Intel superscalable graphics processing technology, guys? Deader than Micheal Jackson ... weird, I thought parallelism was the future, what happened? Laughing Laughing

Intel knows what's up, half their products are dual cores Very Happy

Zen needs to be as fast as Haswell/Skylake in order to compete, sounds like an mission impossible :/. Desktop CPU´s have been complete shit on AMD side for ages. Personally im hyped about Zen, but im not expecting anything or holding back my purchases (im about to pull trigger on X99 setup, and no its not gaming upgrade, i do more with my PC than just play shit ports).

Why the fuck does everyone make such a big drama of this? Does no one actually know this man's history and style? He pretty much works on a project basis. And that project has seemingly come to some kind of an end. The man is a fucking genius, but this was to be expected. And here's why:

1998: moves from DEC (where he did magical work too) to AMD; K7 is already mostly done at this point, as that launches that year
1999: K7 launches, he reportedly pretty much singlehandedly designs K8 and the amd64 ISA...and then leaves AMD. Yeah, that's right. He left AMD in late 1999 just over 3 years before K8 launched in 2003 and joined SiByte.
2000: Becomes Broadcom's chief architect after SiByte was bought.
2004: Joins a company that I forgot the name of, but they were acquired by Apple in 2008. They didn't design SoCs, they did stuff in networking.
2008: He starts designing A4, then A5
2012: Joins AMD again

He does not work on anything for longer than a few years. Everything he does is more or less on a project basis. When he joined AMD, K7 was already done. His work wasn't in the original Athlon, it was Thunderbird (launched in 2000) that had his work. Every time he also makes a pretty big switch in terms of the kind of products he develops, the one exception being the move from DEC to AMD, which in both cases was to develop high-end desktop and server processors. After that he moves to small processors, then to SoCs, then back to desktop.

Broadcom still produces the best networking chips (you'll find Broadcom modems in most smartphones), Apple's SoCs are still crazy good. Him leaving AMD is a shame, but also 100% predictable and not in any way an indication of whether AMD are going down or not.

I expect him to pop up at Samsung or Qualcomm soon enough. I doubt it'll be Nvidia.

And Larrabee failed. Intel never got it to actually work as well as they wanted and it was quietly abandoned for the most part. Part of what Larrabee was is found in Xeon Phi though Wink

Larrabee failed because the nVidia cartel strong armed Microsoft into removing ray tracing hardware acceleration from the DirectX spec, thus destroyed the only reason Larrabee was made for.

Probably because so many people, yourself included Wink, made a big deal about AMD getting their "dream team" back. Now one of them has left again. That's it. No big drama from me, I'm just posting the news Very Happy

Any more info on that?

Intel was marketing Larrabee as a direct competitor to Nvidia and AMD for the gamers, right? So it would have to have some serious performance in DirectX and OpenGL, regardless of any new ray tracing features.

And there is no way they would be able to compete, they must have been high for a few months straight to even spout out their bullshit performance projections, with those dozens of cores scaling up so well ... I was pulling my hair out at their imaginary graphs.

It was great. And still is, because if anyone could make sure Zen would turn out great, it's him. But it was never likely for him to stay longer than 5 years, if that

And no Leo, there have been interviews about Larrabee. There were other issues. It was said to perform about on par with a GTX 285...in 2010. That put it way behind the 480 and 5870, as those were a massive leap. It kept up in pure GPGPU jobs, but with rendering it was not enough. So, what do Intel do? They put it to use for exactly what it's good at: HPC. And for graphics, they radically change their IGP strategy instead, which resulted in Sandy Bridge (they've been doubling transistor accounts allocating to the GPU since then Wink).

In other words, instead of trying to get into an established market with a mediocre product, they attacked AMD and Nvidia in markets where they could make a dent against the leaders in those field. Same with mobile, they abandoned their ARM chip (yep, they had one) and instead took Atom in a direction to compete.

Phil Rogers, having worked 21 years for AMD, left for nvidia.

Quote:
As one of AMD's high-ranking corporate fellows, Rogers' was instrumental in the development of HSA—a technology that integrates the CPU and GPU on the same bus, with shared memory and task queuing/scheduling—and the software (or lack thereof) behind it. He also helped found the HSA Foundation, a consortium made up of the likes of ARM, Imagination, Mediatek, Qualcomm, and Samsung, with an aim to push HSA mainstream. Prior to his work on HSA, Rogers worked at ATI helping to develop Radeon GPUs from the 2000-series up, before the company was gobbled up by AMD.

And 500 other staff are expected to be let go in the future.
