Heh, so it's time I upgrade my mobo and CPU.

Current specs are in my signature. However, having no experience with Skylake, I've been wondering if I could call onto your collective wisdom.

5820k + ASUS X99-S

or

6700k + ASUS Z170-A

I already ordered the RAM, 4 sticks of 4GB's of HyperX Fury DDR4.

why wasting money? you spend a lot of money and get like 5 to max 10% more power

and you cant compare the 6 core cpu with 12 threads with the 4 cores / 8 threads cpu. and btw if you really want to waste your money: the 6700k is better for you cause its higher clocked (and can be higher overclocked). the 5820k is basicly a server cpu, low clock but many cores + threads. for gaming its useless

Go with 5820K. It overclocked very well, and gives you 28 PCI-E lanes. Going forward, it is the better CPU.

I don't really use it for gaming only, otherwise I wouldn't upgrade at all.

If gaming is not your only concern and you have the money, then going with Haswell E is a no brainer. People on this forum tend to only think about the most unoptimized games here, which will use a single core anyway. But we are moving away from those times.

sure we are moving away. but 99% of all games dont even utilize more than 4 cores.

@claude: so what are you doing with it?

Virtualization, for now, mostly. I don't have a test machine at work so I use my personal PC until they can afford to let me buy a proper server.

if its not more than 2 vms at one time the quad core + ht should be enough and will perform better in gaming (cause of clock speeds). the problem might be the ram, 4x4gb for bigger vms are very limiting. in that case you shouldnt even try to run more than 2 vms @ the same time

I honestly wouldn't bother, and just grab an i7 for your current setup, if you have to spend money Wink

Eh, I was approved a budget for a new server at work so this won't take shape anytime soon, heh. Most probably will upgrade to an i7 if and when the current i5 stops meeting my requirements for gaming and whatever else I do that's not virtualization. Doubt that's gonna happen anytime soon.
