I purchased a 2TB HDD from Amazon but it was shipped in a sissy plastic bag lined with bubblewrap. Laughing Sadly I wasn't around or else I would have refused the delivery.

Anyway, it is dented on one corner but it got detected when I connected it and ran a WDdiag extended test which it passed. It took 3.5 hours.

I copied some data onto it (around 80gb) and ran a video which played back fine but am not sure what to think about this right now.

Should I return it because of the corner dent? I have 10 days to make a decision before I can't get a refund or replacement.

Another thing which concerns me is that if the drive fails within the 2 years will I be able to get RMA from WD or not?

1 and 2 are still amazing.

normal packing of hard drives. doenst matter if bubblewrap or the other slim plastic cases. you bought a oem modell most likely so no useless plastic case Wink as the drive (the head) is in parking position the chance to damage it in the transport is low

can you make a picture? check smart values, and a complete scan of a 2tb hard disc would take alot more than 3,5hrs. and upload a picture of the smart values too plz. waranty isnt affected by a dent a the edge

If S.M.A.R.T. values are ok and diagnostic tests show it as ok and you copy/move/delete etc something and isn't terribly slow, I'd keep it.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Here is the SMART info:

And here is the album of the dent plus a corner where I found there to be some odd scratches/markings:

the dent is on the edge where just the electronics are, so i wouldnt worry about that. but the whole case looks scratched, you most likely got a hard disc someone returned? what about the power on time? the smart results dont show that value on your post

I am using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and don't see any column like that there. Sad
Will install Crystaldisk from Toni's link and post again.

Laughing @ Wankh. Just saw your post.

crystialdisk shows the values yes, if its higher than the time u used it -> send it back. just because you can, not that it is necessary. you paid for a new product, and not a used one

I generally replace any disks with re-allocated or pending sectors asap, its a clear sign the disk is failing or close to complete failure. With new HDD's run a smart test, do multiple write passes across the entire disk, re-check with another smart test for errors is a good way to weed out a dodgy disk on purchase.

in the case above i would backup what you can and replace that disk.

So it's a new disk but I should get it replaced because of the re-allocated sectors?

If you decide to keep the HDD, name it "Harvey". You know, for old times sake.

Anyway, I will keep the HDD for a few days to see if everything is alright. Which tests should I run that can run all night?

You should be very careful now with which files you copy to/from the HDD.

Simply not true.

Reallocated Sectors Count S.M.A.R.T. parameter indicates the count of reallocated sectors (512 bytes). When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on a modern hard disks, you will not see "bad blocks" while testing the surface - all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors.

However, the more sectors that are reallocated, the more a sudden decrease (up to 10% and more) can be noticed in the disk read/write speed.

Recommendations

This is a critical parameter. Degradation of this parameter may indicate imminent drive failure. Urgent data backup and hardware replacement is recommended

So to put it simple, observe this attribute. If it starts to rise signifcantly the drive will no longer be safe to keep your data on as it will indicate its slowly "dying". But if it stays like that and wont rise then its more or less safe but I would still have back up of any urgent data from that hdd.
