After ~15 installs of Win7/8.1/10 and about 12 hours wasted...

Turns out Windows 10 doesn't include the AHCI drivers for my chipset. Drivers that both 7 & 8.1 include. Rolling Eyes

Therefore when you upgrade a Win7 install it will fail. But it won't say what is the problem. Oh no! It will just give a cryptic "Safe OS" message. Rolling Eyes

Anyway I fixed it now. Fucking Microsoft.

Give or take.

I tried all combinations possible (eg activating 7 with Daz loader with various keys, activating 8.1 with KMSpico, installing all the 7/8.1 updates first, removing all usb devices, removing all internal HDDs but one, installing with the router switched off and so on) and every time the Win10 setup would fail after the first restart.

Until I thought let's see what it will do if I try a CLEAN install.. (which I didn't want to because my goal was to upgrade from a Win7-daz-loaded install and get a genuine Win10 copy).

..and I see it detects no freaking HDD.

At that moment I know what has been happening is that the stupid setup somehow cannot reuse the already installed 7/8.1 driver, it detects no HDD, and it fails. Silently. With a cryptic "Safe OS" message upon reboot

(Yes, not only it doesn't include the AHCI driver the 7 and 8.1 ISOs do, it doesn't either reuse the already installed 7/8.1 driver if you upgrade a 7/8.1 system. Madness.)

I switch to IDE mode, HDDs do show up, I do a test install just fine.

Finally, I do a clean Win7 install -> Daz loader activation -> Win10 install -> see its activated -> download AHCI drivers put them to USB -> switch back to AHCI in BIOS -> Win10 clean install and load the drivers from the USB.

Success Failed Troll

This shitty OS reminds me of Win98.
My PC froze two times in one week while just working with Word. Never had anything like that happen in all those years on Win7.
Some other programs behave strange from time to time, that i can't remember them doing on Win7.
And those awesome update notification that keeps popping up in fullscreen mode.

Seriously, what a failure of an OS.

Too bad i am too lazy to downgrade to Win7 or even Win8.1. Embarassed

had a SAFEOS erro too, wouldn't upgrade,

at the time nothing came up on google, so had to do trial and error as well.

turns out it would gave me the error if upgrading on x64, no error on x86. X64 clean install worked fine

i didn't mind too much a clean install so i did that, since i just wanted the machine to be activated with the upgrade offer

hell I needed that about 3 hours before you posted it Razz
Went to upgrade my machine yesterday, but I had windows enterprise (it doesn't get the update KB to upgrade).
So formatted HD, installed windows 7 pro, let it spend 3 hours doing windows updates, finally get windows 10 upgrade option, start it and pick "make usb installer", make boot USB for 10, restart PC and let USB boot, format drive again to remove win7 pro, and installed 10.

Well i had enterprise, it cant upgrade. No matter how I tried it either failed saying i cant, or wanted a win10 serial.
So had to install pro so it could see that it was a version that could upgrade.
And i didnt know about the media creation tool. Only way I knew was the inside windows itself with "for another PC" option once the tray icon showed up.

Haha nah, just install win7 and go to the website and download it, no need to run all those updates Razz
Now you know for next time when you need to upgrade a PC on fresh install Razz

but my work laptop and my desktop (I use for work too). Dont want to risk it on. random 'auto windows update' that breaks it, or such. Plus feel cheated using it because I got valid win7 keys falling out of my ass from my old technet account.

I've dug around the net but cant find a clear answer.
Anyone know how to make your current login an 'elevated' admin? Found tons of links about enabling the built in one, but none about changing your current user to one.

There is no admin account on the system?

There is, but it seems windows 10 has 2 types. local admin and 'elevated' admin. You have to show the super admin user if you want to use it.
http://www.intowindows.com/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-in-windows-10/

Not that big a deal, I got my user setup how I want and such and dont want to do it again on that account to switch over to it instead (plus cant change its name from what I can see).

Just annoying that I have to remember to 'run as administrator' on some things, on my normal admin account. Like I cant do straight CMD prompts to regedit. I have to run it as admin to have permissions. Im use to being the only user on the box, and default as the main unrestricted admin user.

You can prevent that from disabling UAC fully (in policy or regedit), but you cannot run any of the "new" windows apps without it. But you do have full access and don't need the run as admin anymore, just the slider down isn't enough to fully disable it. (at least, this is how it was in win8, don't know if they changed it)

Oh nice! Ill try that.
turning down UAC as low as it goes is the first thing I do after install since they added it, and turn the built in firewall off.
And not worried about using any of the new apps, I dug around trying to figure out how to remove them all and found doing:

Get-AppXPackage | Remove-AppxPackage

in powershell removes them all. I dont need any of them.

it annoyed me they decided I need a sports app, an xbox app, and a feed of what the MTV music awards had last night..but gadgets that show me useful shit needed to be removed from windows Razz

Only thing that convinced me to move ahead, you can add them back..
Id be lost without these on my side monitor:

Now my G19 is rip though and the display that I disassembled from it died too not long ago. So I guess I'll go back to those soon Razz

the gadget pack exists since 8 came out Razz using it since then. cant live without my gadgets Razz

and according to your upgrade "problem", freiwald posted something from mydigitallife earlier how to upgrade your key without a real upgrade, but that only works if a win 7 non enterprise is running and activated.

and why do you need elevated admin rights? i dont think you need them every second. if its about some program like aida or miranda for example just set the ntfs rights for the folder right (i.e. make your account the owner with full acces) and it works just fine with a "normal" admin account and uac doenst pop up (it only does because of the program files folder is systemfolder)

Some of my work stuff needs it. Like my remote desktop with /admin argument wont run as console without admin rights and I have to VPN into boxes as the console.

And for some reason I cannot share things over Gotomeeting/GotoAssist without running GTA as administrator.
I mean in the end its a good stopgap incase I do something really stupid. But the amount of times I could do something that stupid is FAR less than the times I need the access by default. Laughing

setting the rights for the folders should do the trick for your work stuff (and maybe change the directory where it stores temp data or sth else -> the temp stuff could be the reason for gotomeeting to malfunction). dunno about the remote desktop stuff
