Starting to wonder whether I should replay all the essential MGS first. The trailer certainly did a good job of reminding me of MGS 1,2,4... and I realized I have no recollection of 3rd.

3rd was my favorite of the series and many other ppls as well. Almost everything about it was great. I'd give it a crack if you've got some time to kill.
Especially since it's entirely focused on big boss unlike the others.

There should be plenty of play time. About 50h at least if I can remember correctly.

Truth
Snake Eater is the best in the series and one of the best story driven game of all time imho. Everything was top notch , from the characters to voice acting to plot twists to emotional moments , funny codecs conversations , the soundtrack ect. It rivals some of the best hollywood productions.
In order of preference (personal) : MGS 3 , MGS 1 , MGS 2 , Metal Gear (NES) , MGS IV.
And i don't count Snake's Revenge since it wasn't canon.To me , while still a great game , the weakest was IV. Yes i prefered MGS 2 to 4 even with the Raiden factor. Solidus was just a great character and the last hour of the game to the ending was simply mind blowing and made up the game for me. MGS 2 changed my view on things happening in the real world , from control , censorship , control of information , an elite few controlling the world etc. It still apply today
A fantastic series. Now time to end it all with The Phantom Pain

mgs2 is by far the best metal gear imo, i can see why hideo kojima had all those years of depression - most mgs fans simply do not understand what he was doing with raiden. they'd rather have a cyborg ninja slaughtering everybody... christ.
he made mgs4 to appeal to the fans who disliked 2.
