I have a (KMSpico-activated) 8.1 Pro installed. I intend to buy an SSD in the coming months, can I somehow install Win 10 on that brand new disk by upgrading my existing 8.1, so I keep my stuff?

you could use one of these Migration-Tools that come with almost any SSD to move everything to said disk, upgrade your copy of 8.1 afterwards and boot at least once into win10.
Your OS should be legit and you can reinstall clean from scratch or just stay on the upgrade

W8 was also tied to hardware, but it still worked with PC upgrades. At worst, you just had to go through phone activation, if the changes were big enough (like new Motherboard + CPU).

even xp had that afaik. so doesnt matter. and its completely different to the hardware hash verification which is done with the 10 upgrade |
I think hardware ID is not that much different when it comes to the function it provides. The main difference now is the lack of an actual unique key to use in addition to that - something one would use to prove he owns a legit version of Windows.
In any case, the license you get is a retail license, and EULA says that license is transferable. I am not sure how exactly they intend to make it work without a key, but it's something that is still supposed to be possible to do.
On the other hand, you get people claiming that MS support is saying that once the "Free Upgrade" period is over in a year, that free retail license will no longer work as such and you will have to buy a proper retail license if you intend to transfer it. This sounds strange to me...
It would nice to have some clarity from MS in that regard. There are no "special cases" like this outlined anywhere officially.

This certainly isn't special case though. People upgrading PCs nowadays? Its not a rare thing at all, and I guess most people want the newest OS on their newly built system...
Just got to know whether OS cost is added to the new hardware each time you decide to upgrade or whether we can be allowed to keep our W10 tied to a microsoft account or whatnot, like an 'app' in their Microsoft store. Man. I don't know. Shits confusing to me.
That they'll take liberties because the upgrade was free initially won't come as shock to me at all.

Well I meant special case as in this free upgrade offer. It doesn't say that the licenses you get are somehow different or that they will be essentially relegated to OEM status after a year, even though they are retail now.

Fuck me Windows 10 theme is bright white. I read about a dark theme but it hasn't been implemented fully yet, or what? I'd rather stare straight into a lightbulb than this. Oh, and my computer is definitely slower as a result of W10. Lovely.
Considering the 'recovery' - go back to Windows 7 option.

Sin did you do a clean install or upgraded from w8? Oh and yes, fuck w8. I'm not happy that I'm feeling a loss in performance. I'm not running a clean install btw.
I'm testing Football Manger 2015 in a window right now and it feels less responsive in menus, sluggier, like it needs a few seconds to process: "did he really click this button right now? oh yes, it appears he did, well, I better load this menu then"...
Tested Killing Floor 2 in fullscreen now, couldn't really tell a difference just from a round of play, so I guess that's a good thing.......

Okay, cool. I'm considering a clean install later, hopefully that's mainly why I feel there's a hit in general performance. Are you able to link me to the image, please?

There is little reason to accomplish a clean install even if going from 7. If you take note on how Windows 'upgrades' to 10 it makes copies of all programs, files, etc. It then installs, and then copies these files back to the new installation. This is why Windows will reboot the machine many times during the 'upgrade' as it first has to install Windows 10, then copy existing drivers, and then finally copy back installed programs.
So if it makes you feel better go ahead and do it, but you are honestly wasting your time. Do the upgrade and save your time. If you feel the upgrade 'failed' and something is not working right you can always clean install anyways. Although i'd imagine most upgrade issues will be those going from 7 that have a device without proper driver support. (The tool will prevent you from upgrading in this case anyways though.)

While I like to hear, that this "upgrade" isn't much of an upgrade and more akin to a new installation...

So it can go wrong after all? Then I'd still do a clean install, just to make sure. The mostly automatic installation process itself isn't what makes it time consuming. The configuration afterwards is.

Yep i feel the same. I went over time from 8 to 8.1 to windows 10 insider and a couple of build after that to the final release and everything is working so fast and flawless. So i really don't see the point to do a clean install. Maybe we are the lucky ones

Windows Defender + Windows Firewall + standard user (for daily usage). You are more than safe from viruses.

There is no silver bullet in security. The more layers you use the better security you have. Windows Defender is definitely light enough to run in background without slowing down your PC so why not keep it enabled.
As soon as we get official version of EMET for Windows 10 it will be very very solid protection without paying a single cent for that high protection.

Oh I didn't mean to disable it. But using common sense is the best AV/AS you can have besides a program. As long as you use your brain, any AV/AS program these days is just fine to detect anything if for some reason you would brain fart.
Though some point in my life, I swore with NOD32, but once that became a hassle to crack (and now with accounts), I started using Windows defender. Though I still recommend simple users to use NOD32/Smart Security.

Sure.
If someone is still looking for good NOD32 deals this is probably the best place to find official deals: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/newegg-com-av-specials.361072/page-27
My suggestion is test Windows Defender combination I said before and buy another AV if you think that Defender is just not enough for you.

Sure anything can go wrong, but the likelihood in this case is very slim. Why bother wasting your time re-configuring windows exactly the way you like it from a clean install when you could have just upgraded?
