So was thinking of upgrading my laptop... but.... As far as I could see, you cannot upgrade 8.0 to 10? I HAVE to upgrade to 8.1 first?!

Yeah 7 to 10, just like 8.1 to 10 is documented, but nowhere can I find proper info about 8.0 to 10...

I would think if you just ran the iso for Windows 10 it should work. What error is it giving or is it just telling you to update to 8.1?

It should notify you when you can upgrade iirc...

Well first I was specifically looking for the update that contains the upgrade exe, but the update never came on 8.1.
So now I've tried the media creation tool and thus far it did download, going to continue soon and see if that worked.

backup your files from your account! many people reported they lost files from the desktop or other directories of c:\users\%USERNAME%\
even the whole profie can be corrupted during the upgrade process. as always: better safe than sorry -> backup is always recommended

True, a backup of any important data on the system disk before an upgrade is wise. Windows 10 is still littered with bugs where some are unnoticeable to most and other bugs are disastrous to a minority.
Been there, lost that, and that too. So yes, backup your userfolder and any other stuff on your drive that you want to keep before you upgrade.

Fuck!
I'm at the "Schedule Your Upgrade" screen. I wanted an option to just toggle out of it at this point, but it wants me to set a specific date and time for the upgrade to start.
Is it possible to just reboot at this point and -not- have Windows 10 installing itself?
I read I had to venture a bit into the install process in order to do a clean install of W10 via iso later because of some hardware recog system thing cuz upgraders from W7 aren't given a cd-key.

Have you read any of this thread?
Upgrade to win 10 will authorise your install to the ms server data base/hw id etc.
Then you can.
Install fresh, no need for key with an iso, usb delivery or whatever means you wish.
Holding off on the install would of been done before you downoaded it... I cancelled mine initially by going into the win10 taskbar icon tool thing and cancelling.
If its too late, why worry about it just upgrade. If you wish to not have it at all I am guessing here you might be able to just delete the download folder on root C $windows etc that contains the install files. I would though check that your boot is still all pointing fine and dandy to your original windows install etc just incase it already fucked about with it waiting for you to restart/install win10

Yeah okay If I have to let W7 be upgraded to W10 to be able to do a clean install later I might as well just let it have its way.
I'm wondering though, if the W10 is registered somehow to to this specific hardware, what happens if say I built a new computer tomorrow? How would I be able to get my W10 registered to the newly built pc? Surely, they're not intending people to buy a new windows per machine or?
I'd just stick with my w7 in that case for a new pc.

This is something I have not found out about or not sure if its been mentioned here at all. If you find out, post it.
How the heck they would verifiy its your pc after you wish to do a complete wipe with new hardware is something that seems beyond possible unless they will expect you to make some kind of backup on a usb stick with HW ID etc from previous build, that you will have to insert while installing at some point in future.

"Once the upgrade is done and activated, Windows 10 is free on that device for life."
I knew there was a plan behind not assigning us a key for re-installs to new pcs. Bastards want us to buy a new copy and register it again. Better hold on to my Windows 7 key, unless that becomes vapor now that its been 'upgraded' to W10.

(I don't think you can be on multiple devices though, maybe it's a bit of both these methods then?) |
It isnt bound to MS account. I upgraded my KMS Win8.1 without ever logging to MS account and it still activated itself, even after clean reinstall install.

I guess that answers that then, must go solely by the unique hardware ID.

yep, isnt tied to the ms acc. after the upgrade before reboot or on initial w10 boot it generates a unique hardware id hash of yours.
think its possible to override that -> i.e. new pc -> install old win 7 or 8.1 again, upgrade to 10 -
> new hardwarehash for that key will be created. clean install w10 -> checks the hardware hash, activated

No wonder they're throwing around "Free upgrade - free w10 for life!" when they're sure you'll upgrade your machine within a couple of weeks/months and have to fork out for a new license anyways...
I was planning on upgrading soonish and I feel I've wasted a W7 license upgrade opportunity right now: I guess I could buy a new W7 license within the year and apply a free update to that. It won't be "free" but tons more free than purchasing a new W10.

W8 was also tied to hardware, but it still worked with PC upgrades. At worst, you just had to go through phone activation, if the changes were big enough (like new Motherboard + CPU).
Win 10 FAQ says something similar, so I don't think anything has changed in that regard:
Quote: | Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?
Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need a product key for re-activations on the same hardware. If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation. You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded. To learn more, click here. |

"If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation."
But how in the daddy bags will 'customer support' know you had a legit W10 license prior to upgrading your hardware? Your old hardware is gone, you know, the stuff they registered.

"Support" knows nothing - activation is automated: you give a bunch of numbers and receive a bunch of numbers back.
As I said, it worked before just fine, so it's nothing new.
I think it's more about having just one activation at a time as opposed to having multiples, and phone activation makes it possible to verify it (perhaps online activation is considered less reliable and easier to circumvent).
EDIT: OK, I got the issue now - there is no key to use, like with W8
Yes, that is a bit interesting. Perhaps there is still something tied to your account?
I don't know how they made it work, but from what it says, it clearly works somehow

Are live tiles broken in Win10? In Win8.1 I had Flipboard and the live tile worked, not on Win10 however. And after upgrading my calendar app worked but now it simply says "Calendar" and nothing else. Same with the Store app. Maybe I need a fresh install for it to work properly?
The system seems to work very well otherwise. I do get the occational "video driver crashed" message, usually happens when I do a search and apparently hit enter too fast? That's when it usually pops up and then the message that it restarted again.

even xp had that afaik. so doesnt matter. and its completely different to the hardware hash verification which is done with the 10 upgrade
