I just can't get into this game. After 7 Days to Die, it feels like there's a lot more grinding, a lot less to do, and less reason to do it. Having said that, the poor performance even on my high-end system is off-putting. It's bad enough that there's no proper map but when the poor frame rate and stutters makes you get lost it's even less fun.
Also, not being able to train all skills is annoying - I don't like to rely on others. Is there a way that you CAN train everything?
I can't compare really to any other survival game, as this is the first one I have properly played. There is a bit of grinding and a few resources can be really annoying to get. But, if they made it easier then I think you would get things too quickly and then interest in the game would be over much quicker. For me the balance seems about right, but there are a few resources that need a dino added so that they can be harvested much quicker imo.
The performance is simply because the game is running without a supported driver. With it being Unreal Engine 4(new), that probably doesn't help either.
Edit: What is the problem with the training? I heard there will be a way to respec. With the blueprints, engram points aren't much of a problem.

Well let's compare it to 7 Days to Die:
- there's less grinding and more exploring with loot as reward = a lot more fun
- there's a goal to the looting and exploring = finding cool rare gear
- there's a goal to building a solid base = zombie hordes every X days
- there's a goal to keep playing and improving your base = zombie hordes get worse and worse
- skills are not depending on levels but on books you find and read = no grinding required
- there's a lot more variation while building due to many different basic materials and WAY more crafting recipes
- many servers are set so that when you die, you don't lose everything but only what you had in your quick bar
- a nice map where you can see yourself and even friends and see where you died
Now ARK:
- lots and lots of grinding for materials to build even a tiny house = gets tiring
- exploring is not only pretty tedious, it's also very dangerous since you can't see shit and the poor framerate doesn't help.
- there's no actual goal in the game - you could say building a solid base against a random dinosaur is a goal but it's a lot more aimless
- there's no reason to keep playing once you've done a bit of everything
- skills are based on grinding grinding grinding to level up so you can research a few new items to make.
- building is a lot more limited
- dying = losing everything + bad map = nightmare to recover body
- very easy to get lost due to constantly changing forest where even huge boulders change around.
ARK is more "hardcore" you might say, but to me it's just grinding, frustrating, laggy and just not that good. Improve the framerate, reduce the need for grinding, add more crafting recipes, make it so there's a way to track yourself on the map and I'll be interest. Right now, it's like a game for masochists.
@red_avatar Goals in ARK, on PvP, are to build a base to defend yourself and your dinos. Long term goals are to tame every dino.
Loot can be picked up at beacons, like blueprints or already crafted equipment.
You get to know the map after a while, at least the area where you are based. I had a problem with the map at first, it is difficult to know where you are. You can create a GPS device at a higher level and it will tell you exactly where you are. I don't take things out with me that I can't afford to lose when travelling far.
Here is what I made in 20 hours on a new server:
Spoiler:
Oh and I am lvl 28. You level up fast when building lots of stuff.

How can anyone take your comparison seriously?! You're praising 7 days to die on all points, and only writing negative things about ARK. I don't play any of them, but i'm pretty damn sure both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Seems to me you want games that is easy to play. Instant action, zero effort. Getting everything handed to you on a silver plate. Its a choice to make it difficult (but not impossible) to navigate in the beginning. You need to make use of the landscape and large landmarks. This choice also makes the gps and compass a very usefull tool.
You just dont know how the game works. Tame animals to help you gather resource. Ankylo can gather rocks FAST. Also bring a parasaur and while gathering resource, just craft it on the spot and let the dino carry for you. This way you can carry like 5 times more than normal. Also did you reach the level yet where you can craft metal hatchet etc. With these you can gather resource much faster.
There are 6 caves and 1 raid boss you can summon. I bet you didnt even explore 1 of the caves. And today they just announced a second raid boss. A giant King Kong. And more will come.
This game hast the MOST pve content any survival game has seen.
Actually, Ankylo gathers metal and flint. There currently is no dino that helps you with rocks. The best way to get rocks is to run along a beach spamming E, until the Doedicurus is released that is.

The point was to highlight the weaknesses of ARK and where there's room to improve. When there's already a game out for over a year that does many things better, it's a valid criticism to compare the two. 7 Days to Die does have its weaknesses but ARK pretty much shares them as well.

This game is not for COD players
Bullshit - I like my games hard but I hate dying due to crashes and losing all my crap and being unable to find my body again - I died twice like that in ARK already. That's just frustrating. Not to mention all the grinding. That's not hard either - a monkey could do it. It's just boring.
7 Days to Die took me several weeks to get decent stuff and wasn't easy at all - the first week is very daunting with loads of dying by zombie hordes but that felt about right and pushed you to explore and root. I played that game for 200+ hours. But the game didn't force you to grind - that's my main point. The level system in ARK is a giant wall where you can't get better stuff until you grind and that's just not that good a system.
I played ARK for about 13 hours which isn't that long but so far, 10+ of those has been grinding. Do you blame me for not being over the moon with it?
It's one of the reasons I moved from the nfohump server, obviously it didn't have high traffic and I thought about endgame, I eventually want to deal with other players. So I moved to an official.
In a related side note. The game is a fucking grind, I agree with whoever said that. 7D2D is grindy but you can get your self set up and established in a couple of hours, Ark is very very slow to do anything, even building a very very basic shelter can take an excruciatingly long time. They need to work on the grind/fun balance. One thing which would probably help would be to unlock the lowest level engram's (thatch house components and basic tools) from the get go, at least it would give new people a chance. Instead of working on some pathetic shelter and then being
I've met a few people during my travels and surprisingly I've hardly ever been killed, infact one guy on a public server game me a full set of armour and tools and a raptor saddle when i was level 5 and then just ran off. Pretty cool stuff, haven't experienced this in any similar game, usually just KOS
the devs just need to find the fun line.
Additional: I have work and a family life, I don't have time to sit and tame a dino for 4 hours! jesus what on earth were they thinking.
The game IS a grind, this I can't deny. Which is why I run my private game at 3x xp/5x taming and slightly higher gathering rates. No way I'm bothered to sit somewhere taming a t-rex for 6 hours in a private game where balance is not an issue. I got better things to do with my time.
It does have a very present constant feeling of progression for me though. There's always the next dino around the corner, and even when you finally get your rex, there's better ones out there (ones that didn't roll oxygen or food on all their bonus stats ). I like 7D2D as much as the next guy and got a good 70 hours in it, but after reaching a certain point, usually around the point where I can build up concrete walls, I get bored. I start missing the scary feeling, sitting in a house being quiet, waiting for the horde to pass by (I don't play on feral, changes the game completely, not to my liking). With Ark, I don't get that. Nearing 200 hours, and I still haven't experienced everything. I still want a plesio, an army of those new dimorphodons, and there's constant development to look forward to (feeding throughs please! (if implemented in a useful way)).
Well I tried the game... I didn't expect much except that typical DayZ-like gameplay where I know I'll get bored within 30 minutes of running. But I didn't get bored, I surprisingly am enjoying this game even after 4 hours of playing.
I think it's the first survival-fps game (that is like DayZ, Rust etc) that I actually feel a bit addicted to. I guess it's because of these things:
* The leveling/stat progression stuff... Some hate that stuff, which is completely understandable but for me it's great.
* The setting, I love jungles and tropical island settings in games and this combined with the fidelity of the Unreal Engine 4, it looks fucking amazing (although some of the effects are certainly overdone).
* The dino taming appeals much more to me than repairing a truck does.
That said, I really can't play more for now because playing at ~40 fps is just awful in this game, it feels more like 20 fps. I know there's a tweak, I tried it and while the FPS is much better with that tweak on, the game also looks much much worse and the atmosphere is completely gone. I tried an experimental SLI profile, which gave me nearly 60 fps with normal graphics but the profile has geometric flickering so it's a no go.
I'll definitely play this once they fix either SLI (in DX12 according to the devs) or once they get the performance better somehow.
Well, I think they're still lacking the 'big' performance improvement patch they have been mentioning in patch notes (they're always pushing it back to the 'next release')
I have some hopes on that. Though, I'd love to play this on the epic settings. (it looks awesome)

I would love some minecraftion automation features (maybe no automated gathering of any kind) Ie. chest sorting etc. I usually end up with nightmarish set of chests and cabinets and eventually start displacing important items (I'm a squirrel so I don't dare to throw anything away I find)
I think this is probably my most favourite game of all time.
Built a metal building on the PvP server I play on. Wood walls around that with wood spikes, then another stone wall around that with metal spikes. Spikes on the roof and just everywhere, and a nice collection of dinos.
The people on the server seem cool. Some of the low level people are getting raided/killed every now and again. New people coming and going.
Great game. But it would be cool if any humpers wanted to come on the server and join up. My clan name is We Are Legion. Server The-EU-OfficialServer204. I can help you get set up and give you a major boost in getting resources/crafting/taming dinos. Don't make me beg
Edit: Oh, building and dinos are set to personally owned. So if you decided to leave the clan everything you have would still be yours. That also means building your own base though and not being able to build on each others. You would have access to all tribe bases. Settings could be changed if needed, I guess.

I'm on a i7, 12GB, GTX 670 for some basic info of my rig and I can now run the game just fine online and singleplayer. I bought this game the day it came out because I like online survival games like Rust, Reign of Kings and H1Z1. I've played hundreds of hours on these games and I was pretty let down that I couldn't play ARK until recently. I know my PC isn't great or anything, but now I can run the game pretty solid on 1080p with most setting on medium with about 40-45fps.
When this game first launched I was only getting around 5fps and it was completely unplayable for me. Just putting this out there for anyone who is worried about performance being an issue for them on deciding if they want to give this game a try or not. If your rig is on the low end like mine you should be able to run the game without any issues; for Nvidia users at least. I'm not sure how well the game will run on ATI cards.
We felt kind of bad leaving this guy all out in the open so we gave him a a helping hand...
We finished it off with spikes on the front too.
Edit: Although after we had dragged him from his home and built him his safe place we realised he didn't have a bed at his home so he wouldn't be able to respawn near. I hope he made it back ok.

Well, you gotta understand, he only has a 970.. can't expect too much from that, let's be honest now.
Ok, to be fair, it looks better on my 660. Runs at 25fps, but I'd rather take that over those textures.. You should be able to bump that quality up by quite a bit Newty, surely.
