http://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-1-2-july-4-release-kickoff/

Retroarch 1.2 has been released and it brings a *lot* of new changes, mostly UI related in order to make the whole system a lot more visually appealing and easy to navigate, but most importantly it adds a new "Collection" system. This new system allows you to scan a ROM folder and Retroarch will then categorise this into a system-specific collection, letting you select the right game you want at the right time without having to browse folders. It also remembers what emulator core you select on first run, though this is a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. If you choose a shit emulator core, you're fucked and stuck with it from what I can tell. I simply cannot get the XMB collection to "forget" which core I selected without having to edit the <SYSTEM>.lpl file. This can be a nightmare if you choose a dodgy core that plays badly or doesn't play at all, as RA will either hang or crash if you try to load the ROM via the playlist options on the XMB.

Not to mention that this works from a database so if your game, such as a ROMhack or translation, isn't in the database? It won't get added to the system collection when it's scanned. Not cool. They are "working" on it though, so it's a start Smile Strangely, even though there's a complete database for Gameboy/Gameboy Colour, and I have a byte-perfect dumped set, scanning my ROMs doesn't create a playlist. Odd.

http://libretro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3350

A new function is box art displaying to make viewing your games just that much prettier. Later they'll be working on updates that allow preview videos and game text blurb too Smile

Oh god, just finished Super Mario Galaxy on Dolphin. (for the first time)
They really improved the emulator, one year ago it was unplayable now it works with HLE audio even on midrange systems and music won't cut off.
Holy shit this game, these graphics, the design, the music. That is the Nintendo I grew up with.
Controls great with Xbox360 pad, got "all" 120 stars with Mario without using cheats or savestates. (other than skipping transitions on restarts)

Need one or two days break, then its time for Mario Galaxy 2 Very Happy

Your post has prompted me to download SMG and dolphin Smile

Any tips I should know about setting up dolphin (or which version to use?)

Yeah, use 4.0-1300 or newer, thats where the HLE bugs were fixed.
If you use the xbox pad you map the IR cursor to the right stick, if you want it hidden by default set Hide to "NOT shoulder button". Otherwise set center to 0 and height to 80 so the cursor stays at the bottom.
Jump to A and Right Trigger. Tilt to hold button + right stick.
For the 3 stages where mario is rolling on a ball set the Wiimote to upright.

Some screens but I couldn't use better AA/scaling. (60fps on i7 860 with this, OpenGL plugin)

Substantial progress on Citra as the developers switch to using Vertex Shaders rather than GLSL Shaders, bringing significant speedups to the overall performance (games running at a third, and half, speed rather than running at a tenth Razz) as well as fixing a lot of blockers and issues with the way visuals are rendered.

So to the people that are running an arcade/emulator machine... what frontend are you using?

So far I tried:

Launchbox: pretty open... but it lacks some. Ended up getting a refund from premium since the registry key was an unprotected file with some of my personal data in it (most stuff is free tho).

GameEx: Man they really bloated that one up, plus it still looks rather shabby than it first came out. Config is very cumbersome compared to Launchbox. The amount of options was great... rest: not so much. Tried lifetime thingie... ended up getting a refund after a day since it really is not worth 50€. This one really felt outdated.

So next ones I'm going to try out are:

Maximus Arcade: Never tried it
Mgalaxy: same, never tried
Emulation Station: The manual editing of config xml's is making me hesitant.
Hyperspin: used to have a setup with this, liked it... bit flashy and rather lenghty to set up properly. Bit too strict. Might go back if all others fail to win me over.

I did try Retroarch... in the end I didn't like how it looked. Been using it on the frontend for most emulation (really has some nice cores).

Seeing I am not worthy of a response... I ended up with testing a bunch of them! Mad Razz

Ended up with Maximus Arcade for the short term, twas that easy to set it up and well: free. It will do the job until I have set up a Hyperspin again.

Mgalaxy and Emu Station aren't that bad... but I see them more for small builds of Mame and the popular consoles. Maximus fits that category, but it's just a temp one that was way faster the setup department. Don't want to waste days on something that is temporary nor do I want to type in xml files for it.

The upcoming 'GameEx Revolution' looked to me like Maximus expanded. Still seems like their revolution will end up looking dated by the time they get it out.

Whoa, sorry bud, I didn't see the post Facepalm GEX Revolution looks to be good but it's been "upcoming" for two years now, only recently have they even put minuscule parts of it online - and even that is only some online highscore sharing functionality. Holding your breath for that would result in death quite quickly Razz I haven't tried out Maximus at all but I've put an ungodly amount of time into Hyperspin though I use a MASSIVELY stripped back and stylish theme, none of that garish animated rubbish all over the place Very Happy

Retroarch is really nice on a PC or tablet/HDMI box-stick *if* you've got the hardware for them since RA itself adds a substantial overhead on top of the emulator cores themselves. PCSX-R/ePSXe/SNES9x+ EX and various others all run flawlessly on my MK908ii Android stick yet if I try to run them via RA, the system freezes almost constantly and performance drops when it's not freezing.

Mostly, for arcade stuff, I stick to Hyperspin 1.3 with Hyperlaunch 3.1, I'm not paying for Hyperspin 1.4 and the new Rocketlaunch changes too much.. and with changes comes the breaking of old shit, and I've spent far too much time on this to have it break now Sad For my PC I mostly just use standalone emulators but I am seriously digging RA's cores and shaders, especially the new RA 1.2 with the new UI and game/catalogue sorting.

Hehe no worries. Very Happy

Indeed Revolution is just too long of a wait for me... and its a thing I wanted to do now. Plus the stuff you got for paying from them, that left quite a sour taste. Refund was fast and without a problem tho. Smile

Running it all on my girl's old PC, it handles everything up to the GC. So that is enough for me. Wii games we both play on our main PC's. Forgot the specs now but I thought something like: I3 at 2.6 gigabursts. Along with 8gb ram and my trusty old 560TI.

Using standalone emulators mostly now, think the only ones I'm still using in RA are the Atari (console) ones, N64 and 3DO. It was a pain to clean the full 3DO library to end up with just games worth playing. That system had junk... jeez!

Reason I'm going back to Hyperspin: some familiarity, looks nicer and in a way 'easier' to set up due to its community. Still a pain and strict, so you want it running once and staying off it for the most part. Since updating and a lot of change does have a tendency to break it

If you're gaming on the PC, Retroarch 1.2 might well be one of the better options for you since it contains pretty much the best emulators for the best systems, with a few exceptions. The new UI and sorting really takes a lot of the hassle out and it's even adding boxart functionality too. The only issue right now is that their database stuff is a pain in the arse as to whether it will even read your collection, it's all based on hashes for the files rather than filenames, so if you've got anything that isn't in the official database -- like translations or hacks, or even dumps from a different SET -- then they don't get added to collections when scanned. Oh, that and the last time I checked they hadn't got databases for CD-based systems yet Sad

Hell, even if you DON'T touch anything, HS has a tendency to shit itself and die for no reason. I had everything setup on mine, working perfectly one day, the next day; PCSX2 doesn't work any more. It "works" but it doesn't ESCAPE/RETURN properly, leaving either the main emulator window on display or not loading at all. So yeah, no more PS2 on my cab.

yay...(!)

I bought Maximus Arcade. My main problem is its limited support. Getting stuff like the Amiga emulator to work is a huge pain in the ass though. I use it with my SF4 Fightstick

And it works perfectly with that.

Well it is dead, they started the process of selling their source code a year ago.
So you won't find much support for it nor see any development on it, it's just a good temp solution seeing how easy it is to set up the system it comes with.

No need to pay for it (especially not for a 'dead' product), you can easily find ways to register for free. Smile

I bought it right before they did so imagine how I felt but yeah, that program still should have gotten quite a bit more work to be truly great.

Aye, it can be quite daunting to set up.
Join their forums and read, read and read more.
Your xml's need to be properly setup, kind of what I was on about on the strictness of the whole frontend.

Tho last time I was checking the toobz, there were some good tutorials out there. Didn't save em since I was tinkering with GameEx at the time. Sad
