Modern day (which wave is the newest these days?) feminism is definitely the product of spoiled, upper-middle class bored people.

People with real problems don't have time to make up fake problems. Simple as that.

geez what warped people, so its ok for them to harass a young man and potentially ruin his life but if somebody objects they want them put in jail for 6 months for fictional harassment

This reminds me of the final year project we had for our Media course in high school but without the huge bias. We had to examine the gender representation in all kinds of media: TV, radio, books, music, games etc. - our class was 2/3 girls too.

Guess what the conclusions about games were? "Girls don't care about complex games (read: most console and PC games), don't want to play them, have no interest in them, not even if they had more female-oriented content".

That's what 20 girls pretty much all agreed with and turns out the other classes came to the same conclusion. Sure, that was 15 years ago but even today, I see that nearly all girls stick with horrible shit like Flappy Bird, Candy Crush, etc. having zero interest in anything more complicated. Not because they wouldn't be able to play them - they just don't like those.

Sexism? No, it's called capitalism. Girls don't buy games nearly as much, even when they're geared towards girls so why should devs waste time on them? There's plenty of simple games on phones so girls have their wish. Guys have theirs on consoles. If anything phones are in dire need for more complex games.

Well written article on how certain sites just regurgitate stuff without giving it a second thought:

You could make a dozen sites by writing articles like that because the media is rotten to the core in the way they twist and alter facts to get readers. It's sad but that's capitalism for you.

It's a consequence of capitalism. Look at newspapers 15 years ago before the Internet created enormous competition and the news was a lot more moderated and researched. Nowadays, they have become extremely lazy in research and are eager to print anything which might mean extra readers - there's plenty of cases which have discovered this to be true.

This is also why sites like the BBC and other state-funded news channels (De Redactie in Belgium for example) have a higher standard than the commercial papers and websites.

I am very serious about what I wrote (although not the bad conclusions you both draw from it). It's pretty much common knowledge too that the Internet screwed over the big media corporations causing them to take more desperate measures while making budget cuts and reducing staff - and this pretty much globally -so why are you two acting as if it's news to you?

I work for a printing company that has worked for several media corporations and have worked for a newspaper for 9 years on a freelance basis so I know what I'm talking about - a lot more than you two do, I'm sure.

Right, because the internet created poorly researched journalism so sez u Laughing Maybe in whatever country you're from they have glowing journalism from the world's masterclass journalists, but meanwhile in the rest of the world... we've had shitty journalism from dozens of newspapers and media outlets across every other civilised country ever since newspapers were a thing. But no no, you work for a Printing Company© and if you say the internet is the cause of shitty news reporting, then hey, who am I to disagree? \o/

Because of course it was Teh Internet® that gave rise to;

News of the World. Oh wait.. nope, that's been around since the 1840s.
The Daily Mail. Darn it... this one 1896. I wonder if Edison and Tesla had the internet?
The Sun. Oh wait, again, 1964. Seems to be pre public internet too, but what do I know? Laughing
The Daily Mirror
The Star
Daily Sport
National Enquirer
Weekly World News

... egh, I'll just stop. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about, no such thing as shitty printed journalism before the Teh Internet©, I guess. You know a lot more than everyone else because you work for a printing company.

We used to call them "tabloid rags" or "yellow journalism".. and these were the precursor to the digital age; not the product of it. What we know as "clickbait" now is nothing more than the digital representation of the classic printed sensationalist headlines from shitty rags. If anything, we can blame the printed press for online poorly researched shitty "journalistic" articles

Troll Dad

Satirical comic strip printed in 1888, complaining about the state of "modern daily press" being sensationalist and printing rubbish.

Curse you, internet!

I spent a good part of a year reading through a pile of newspapers (20s and 30s). Educational experience, but I wouldn't do it again, even if I was to be paid.

Language had higher quality (or at least they made an effort) and there were certain lines most of them wouldn't cross regarding private lives - not just refusing to print "sex-tapes of a nobody #23" equivalents.

But appealing to the lowest common denominator? Sensationalism? Mob tactics? Shaming and ridiculing? Servilism towards business or arbitrarily selected authority figures? Partisanship without even an inch of self-awareness?

Compared with that, Internet, global village and better literacy levels pulled many curtains and turns out we can see how sausage is being made, including likes of Denton adding their shit to ingredients. Combine that with ability to instantly and publically call them out and there's no excuse not to know about this anymore.

Not that public at large gives a damn, obviously. The only things that changed are means of distraction - and they didn't even change THAT much.

Well for a long while I held the Belgian (where he's from) and the press from The Netherlands a lot higher in regard than indeed places like the UK and others (these days it's lesser)

I still consider it better than what I see over here, which seems to be very selective... but the past 10 years BE and NL news have suffered a lot. Some blame is their cost cutting and going digital. They sure as shit went into the more sensationalism route ever since they discovered the internet market.

I wouldn't blame the internet for shitty press since every market had it's own identity long before that, but I will say that the internet has influenced some press and made them lose their own identity.

I see that as the normal progression of sensationalist rags moving from costly print to infinitely cheaper digital content. As frobisher said, you notice it more readily online since it's everywhere.. it's always in your face, you can see behind the curtain and see how everything works now, with a constant stream of bullshit. Before you had to buy the papers and the magazines to see it. The digital age may well have heralded cost cutting and job losses from the physical print, this is how everything has worked when moving from physical to virtual goods, but to even remotely come close to blaming it for increased sensationalism or claiming that papers "weren't this bad XX years ago" is absolutely wrong and I disagree with that completely.

I can't speak for Belgian newspapers but I can pretty much make a guess and I wager you guys had your fair share of trash, just like the UK, just like America, even like Norway and Sweden.
