Hi everyone. At long last, I’m very excited to be able to reveal that we will be bringing the Japanese action game and prestigious ‘Famitsu Gold Award’ winner, Way of the Samurai 4, to PC via Steam later this year!

Developed and published in Japan by Acquire and Spike Chunsoft, Way of the Samurai 4 is part of the million+ selling Way of the Samurai series. The series has seen sequels (and even a prequel) released on numerous consoles, including PSP, PS3 and Xbox 360, but to date none of the games have ever been released on PC. Considering that Way of the Samurai 4 has so far been exclusive to PS3, we’re obviously delighted to be working alongside both Acquire and Spike Chunsoft in creating the first ever transition to PC of such a popular series!

This isn’t the first time we’ve stepped out of the RPG world but I think it’s fair to say that this title represents a bit of a departure for us here at Ghostlight. While we’ve always worked hard to bring Japanese games over to our shores, we’ve mainly focused on JRPGs so this will be the first big Japanese action game we’ve ever worked on! Smile

Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect from Way of the Samurai 4:

This 4th entry is set in the mid 19th century, as Japan has begun to open its borders to the Western world. You’ll play as a master-less samurai thrown into a three way conflict between the shogunate pro-governmental forces, the nationalistic isolationists, and the foreign powers who are heavily influenced by the British Navy.

Navigating this new and dangerous world, the missions you select will shape your destiny as you discover multiple endings depending on your loyalty to the three factions.

Way of the Samurai 4 features an awesome dynamic combat system allowing the player to use a wide array of melee and gunpowder weapons to fight enemy samurai. But Way of the Samurai 4 isn’t all about combat as it also offers a vast array of character customization options, weapons and equipment upgrades and a chance to learn a strange new language, English Smile.

We’re already hard at work on the PC conversion and I’m hoping to be able to share more news on the game in the very near future.

Some more gameplay info about the game from some guy on GAFer which got me interested in this
Quote:
You start out as some random ass samurai who arrives in a city that has a strong European influence as it basically goes through that transition period. You have a resistance trying to stop this European influence that you can side with (Both good guys and bad) and a group on the Europeans you can side with (Both good and bad).

The Europeans range from silly caricature of European waifus to a guy who is basically DMC Dante. Resistance force is equally wild hot blooded youth types or the boring ol reasonable waifus. It's weird shit happening left and right. Big bads pulling the strings on both ends. Or you can say fuck it and make your own way!

Meantime you can beat up a dojo leader and become a teacher. You can beat up dudes on the street and force them to become your disciples. You can beat up NPCs and force them to join your dojo. It can become your story if you want to say fuck it to politics and want to just make a badass dojo filled with waifu warriors or strong ass dudes. Whatever man, do what you want.

You can help the town rebuild as well and expand a little bit depending on how you go. You'll start being unable to speak English and depending on what you do can open up an English school you learn at to open up new segments. Things like that IMPACT NEW RUN THROUGHS as the old achievements stick and lead into NEW routes. It's wild stuff.

Also you can literally metal gear your way into lover's home in a minigame. It's the strangest thing in the game. There are "invasions" of sort, but you don't interact directly, it's just saved characters from other players games (Or your own OLD character!) dropping in to say hi. Sometimes they're pissed and challenge you right up on the street. Sometimes they're normal dudes. Other times they'll be a green afro haired samurai with a giant bonnet but otherwise naked who one shots you... people make strange characters.

You can also side with the lawmakers. Even within each of those there are miniroutes as there are factions within factions.
Also here are 10 completely different endings (3 had 22, but they were mostly minor variations).

The series actually has a pretty interesting gameplay premise, in that the story proceeds whether you participate or not, and you're pretty much free to side with any of the factions involved, just observe, or just give up and leave at any time (in order to keep your equipment for a new playthrough).

No idea how the most recent ones play and if that's changed, though, as I've only played 1 and 2 for the PS2 (emulated), but I can already tell the setting's gotten way more goofy. Biggest issue I've had with the first two was unskippable cutscenes. Wouldn't call the combat clunky, though. And they were kinda short, but also pretty replayable.

So I'm a bit hopeful for this.

Awesome concept (Choose Your Own Adventure with samurai!) Last time I played a game in this series was the first game on the PS2.I remember enjoying it quite a lot. I'm definitely looking forward to checking this out.

I know this game, I know it's really fucking weird. Not sure I'll like playing it, but I'll try it when it's out. I'm a bit afraid of how the port will be though...

Thought the concept was nice, but then played nr3 on PS3 and nope, didn't enjoy the game. Too clunky, porting that will make it only clunkier!

Remember playing one of these on ps2. Was a pretty decent open world samurai game with attrociously liear and time limited story gamrplay. People who were bitching about the timed story in Dead Rising 1 know nothing (John Snow...).

Collecting swords was ok though.

Some news from Ghostlight Games.

Quote:
Regarding Way of the Samurai 4:
Moving on to our other upcoming Steam projects now and I’m pleased to say that the PC conversion of Way of the Samurai 4 is coming along really well. We’ve recently started to implement PC controls although these will probably undergo some refinement during testing. Also the required GUI changes (keyboard/mouse controls) are being added for the PC version of the game. With the release growing ever nearer, the PR machine (that’s me) has already started pestering the team for marketing materials for the game and our guys are busily producing some great artwork which you can expect to see in the very near future Smile.

+ some infor regarding Agarest 2:
Of course we’ve also been hard at work on Agarest: Generations Of War 2 which still has quite a way to go but we’re making steady progress. The latest playable that’s currently in test in our office is far more stable than previous builds and from what I’ve seen, the game is looking very good on the PC. This latest instalment in the Agarest saga is quite a departure from the first two as it features a revamped battle system, improved resolution for the character art, movies and environments as well as a totally new Agarest universe to explore. Fans of the first two instalments are going to love this!

Anyway, it was delayed to February.

In other very important news, we’ve continued to make excellent progress on the mighty Way of the Samurai 4, so much so in fact that we’ve now reached the point where we’ve been able to set an internal release date - hurrah! I’m told that we’re currently seeking approval for this release date from our partners in Japan but if all goes well we should be able to update our blog and the Steam Store with all the details very, very soon, so watch this space!

One thing I can confirm is that there will be a weeklong pre-purchase period for Way of the Samurai 4, during which time you’ll be able to pick up this epic game and its DLC with a sizeable discount as a thank you to anyone who pre-orders.

Once again, on behalf of the team here, we’d like to thank you for your patience on this one! Our team have been working incredibly hard on this game and it’s been a long and frustrating wait for us and I’m sure for all of you too. We’re nearly there now though. The main bugs that have been causing our programmers all sorts of headaches have all been fixed and we’re just left with a few smaller issues to sort out - assuming of course, that our hard working beta testers don’t turn anything else up this week! Wink Any of our beta testers reading this should know how much we appreciate what they do… huge thanks to you all… now get back to work! *cracks whip* Smile

Of course with the release of Way of the Samurai 4 nearly upon us, here at Ghostlight we were facing a rather large hole in our schedule. The way the weather has been lately, lazing around in the sun does seem an appealing prospect, but we don’t like to sit idle here at Ghostlight. So, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just signed a new deal to bring another console JRPG to PC! I can’t share the game’s title just yet, but I thought you might be interested in knowing. Also, it’s been far too long since I’ve teased anything and I do have a reputation to maintain. :

Recorded some FullHD + SweetFX footage showing options menu and gameplay - mostly fighting and sex/romancing (which looks kinda strange and creepy from European point of view).

Game is huge, enjoyable, full of choices and stuff to do, but 30FPS limit, lack of graphics options and lack of possibility to turn camera with mouse (don't even try to play using KB+M if you have less than three arms, seriously) is really annoying.
