Do a search with HitmanPro, when it finds the shit, activate the free trial and clean it.

its only bad if ur a fresh installer. still going fine this one here with everything turned off thats shit and no update.
I have not found or looked really for a better alternative. Is there one? most torrent clients have become pretty shit tbh.

I got one too last year. I removed it using CCleaner and Combofix.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

I got one once - used OTL scanning (or something similar, newer) and common sense + a little bit of googling when trying to choose from the logs things to be removed.

Seriously though, how exactly does one become infected with this? You guys seem pretty tech savvy so it's a bit worrying when one of you reports this.

Hard to say - either a website contains it (since it usually lands in temp or temporary internet files) or a bad crack-ish thing.

Mostly torrented games with a setup.exe that is infected and drops and runs malware. If you have a firewall it's no big deal, you just get rid of it. If it actually connected then you can't be sure, sometimes these can successfull leak your browser's saved passwords and forms etc.
I think most people, even techsavvy ones, are conditioned to accept UAC prompts on installers. Others, like me, have UAC disabled.

^ That, probably some fking game with a crack or something brought it in. Also i never have the antivirus enabled so when one of the trusty torrents brings something in... well.... its in.

Shouldnt take you that long to back up your info. Just backup the whole users folder. YOu can also do an in place "upgrade" install and it will keep all your files and programs/games and just replace the main system files.
