It's too obviously weird for my taste. It's like it tries too hard.

It tries to look like Twin Peaks crossed with Lost crossed with Wallander, but what it really comes off as is more like Under the Dome crossed with Haven crossed with CSI: Weirdtown Very Happy

Might give it an episode or two more, but so far I'm not into it.

It's not weird at all.
It's quite base.

it's more LoM and TW than TW and Lost.

I watched the first episode. They squandered away some of the mystery by showing it way too early. Half-way into the series is one thing... but to show most of them in the pilot episode? Neutral

1 and 2 are still amazing.

The twist is supposed to be revealed in Ep5, called "The Truth".. The final episode (Ep 10) is titled "Cycle". Food for thought.

Yea, the episode was all about the reveal, though the fact that they explained a while bunch of things so early in the season makes me think that maybe it could just be a cover.

I just read an interview with the showrunner where he basically says "I didn't change anything from the book." So that's probably it.

I knew nothing of the show or the source material, and just watched the five episodes over the weekend...
I have to say that was one of the best setups for a reveal I have seen on TV in a while. After watching the first episode, I really didn't expect it to go in the direction it did.

On the show overall... on one hand I like that they didn't drag the whole mystery out for too long, but on the other hand, now that they have done the reveals, I am concerned that it's just going to "devolve" into a small-town drama with a twist. I don't think the characters by themselves are all that interesting to carry the show with the mystery as a backdrop.

Loving every minute of it, the pacing is excellent, I was very pleased to see that they didn't waste too much of the screen time on the love triangle drama as I was afraid they would.

Well, there's no time for it to "devolve"; there are only 4 episodes left. Razz
The characters are indeed uninteresting and veeeeeery 2D. Ep6 does shed light to some of the characters background but it's too little too late. Still I am somewhat enjoying it.

Exactly. I've also really enjoyed the show thus far but I really don't want it to devolve into family drama shit. The only character I actually care about right now is Ethan. Everyone else, not so much.

But considering they're keeping it fairly close to the books (which I haven't read), I'm hoping the rest of the books are similar in tone to what they've adapted thus far.

There are three books and the miniseries adapts them all. We're already in the events of the third book and the final episode will end where the third and final book ends.

Quote:
Book 1 premise:

Quote:
Secret service agent Ethan Burke arrives in Wayward Pines, Idaho, with a clear mission: locate and recover two federal agents who went missing in the bucolic town one month earlier. But within minutes of his arrival, Ethan is involved in a violent accident. He comes to in a hospital, with no ID, no cell phone, and no briefcase. The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels...off. As the days pass, Ethan's investigation into the disappearance of his colleagues turns up more questions than answers. Why can't he get any phone calls through to his wife and son in the outside world? Why doesn't anyone believe he is who he says he is? And what is the purpose of the electrified fences surrounding the town? Are they meant to keep the residents in? Or something else out? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the world he thought he knew, from the man he thought he was, until he must face a horrifying fact—he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive. Intense and gripping, Pines is another masterful thriller from the mind of bestselling novelist Blake Crouch.

Book 2 premise:

Quote:
Welcome to Wayward Pines, population 461. Nestled amidst picture-perfect mountains, the idyllic town is a modern-day Eden...except for the electrified fence and razor wire, snipers scoping everything 24/7, and the relentless surveillance tracking each word and gesture.

None of the residents know how they got here. They are told where to work, how to live, and who to marry. Some believe they are dead. Others think they're trapped in an unfathomable experiment. Everyone secretly dreams of leaving, but those who dare face a terrifying surprise.

Ethan Burke has seen the world beyond. He's sheriff, and one of the few who knows the truth—Wayward Pines isn't just a town. And what lies on the other side of the fence is a nightmare beyond anyone's imagining.

Book 3 premise - we are here:

Quote:
Welcome to Wayward Pines, the last town.

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrived in Wayward Pines, Idaho, three weeks ago. In this town, people are told who to marry, where to live, where to work. Their children are taught that David Pilcher, the town's creator, is god. No one is allowed to leave; even asking questions can get you killed.

But Ethan has discovered the astonishing secret of what lies beyond the electrified fence that surrounds Wayward Pines and protects it from the terrifying world beyond. It is a secret that has the entire population completely under the control of a madman and his army of followers, a secret that is about to come storming through the fence to wipe out this last, fragile remnant of humanity.

Blake Crouch's electrifying conclusion to the Wayward Pines Series—now a Major Television Event Series debuting 2015 on FOX—will have you glued to the page right down to the very last word.

While a Season 2 based on brand new material is a possibility, the show was conceived first and foremost as a 10 episode standalone miniseries adaptation of the 3 books.

"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."

BTW 2nd spin-off-y season is in very early talks because of strong DVR ratings.

http://deadline.com/2015/06/wayward-pines-high-dvr-lift-record-season-2-renewal-1201452683/

Quote:
The somewhat surprisingly solid and consistent ratings performance by Wayward Pines has not gone unnoticed. I hear there is interest in another season of the mystery series. Because of the long time frame between the project’s pickup/production and its airdate, the options on all actors lapsed long ago. (Wayward Pines’ cast also includes Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino and Melissa Leo.) I hear the idea is to explore a potential second installment with different characters and cast but in the same world, which would not be a straight anthology format. I hear talks are preliminary, and Fox brass are expected to meet with the Wayward Pines creative team soon to discuss the possibilities.
