But he's yet to post anything on his own forums, and this communication is just through an email... it isn't exactly reassuring to his backers - if he found the time to write and email to some journo, he certainly has the time to write a quick 'I'm still here' forum post.

It seems to me the guy has some form of breakdown. I initially though he'd gone to ground to complete for release. But I think now it's more serious. Hope he's ok but I'd be surprised to see a release anytime soon.

Great news, I can relate to what he said in many ways, when your mind takes over, and you finally realise there is a problem, it's very hard to acknowledge and discuss it, let alone on a forum.
Good stuff, hopefully it'll be done before SC

Excellent, but now he is sorted, he really needs to just make the odd post to let us know how things are going. No need for SC over-the-top crap, just a 'Did some stuff on the UI this week' or 'Ship design is almost done', that's it.
I absolutely cannot wait, I'm feeling good things about this project.'

Agree.
No need for lengthy dev updates of the past, just small snippets of info now and then are enough.
I too am excited about this, really looking forward to see how it all pans out.

The guy seemed stable, intelligent, and incredibly together in those video updates years back. Guess he was incredibly good at hiding losing his shit. To be honest, I'd completely forgotten this game even existed up until this thread was brought back up. Shame to see it die, but I don't think anyone ever thought he'd finish it to begin with.
That said, Kickstarter and other crowdfunding campaigns should be forced to have a link on their main page of projects that failed to deliver a finished product, sortable by date and money raised, as a warning to potential backers of any other project on the site. Seems like the honest thing to do - which is exactly why it will never be done.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Sad to see it come to an end but not all that surprised.
From what i have read Josh was a perfectionist who would go back and redo areas several times over. This approach will not work when for the most part it's a solo project.
He's a young guy with little experience and it grinded him down. He's obviously intelligent, will learn from it and move on. Best of luck to him.

i spent some time compiling these, copy pasting every fucking library and header i could into the same directory in true c++ dev skills, and succeeded in getting it to run.
the newest compilation of the game is C++/Lua which is a nice looking and running techdemo, very little functionality beyond being able to move the ship, collide with things, fire the guns but no gameplay/sound or UI or anything going on in the game world. reasonably well laid out engine underneath and I think it would have been quite easy to put a game scenario together with it, just glancing at the lua files. kinda weird he gave up here but i guess he got stuck on some aspect or the monotony of recreating the prototype got to him.
the older prototype version is a much more interesting affair, being an almost functional game. it's baffling why this one was abandoned in favor of the latter, but this one features a custom script language (not great but functional) and the frame rate is maybe not perfect with a lot of ships around, it has sound, collisions, targeting & damage, a warp system with basic trading ai using it, an actual half-working interface, nice map system.
you can see the performance is not the best, i'm pulling 75 fps (maybe running ok with todays hardware, but certainly not back in 2012-2014) and it's no surprise why performance may have not been the best, it's rendering 10 million polygons or more at a time.. although i don't think it's a huge problem with its 700 or so drawcalls.
i think it's possible someone will work on it, i didn't really see much wrong with the game engine, although the all important gameplay loop is not really there yet.

Guy was a terribly obsessed perfectionist. As far as I remember he would go back and rewrite and redo stuff he didn't like something in. I guess most of the time during development he was stomping at the same spot thinking why it's not perfect.
Maybe he could've done it without that and if he scoped down to something like Everspace but he always wanted to make a game like a modern Freelancer mashed with X and Star Wars.

That was the end of him / the project.
That constant aim for perfection will eventually wear you down in ways you cannot even imagine.
And then... one day, you will be finding yourself spent, empty, unhappy with almost everything, facing impossible walls and barriers.
