Knock them out using your fists or the slingshot (consumes stones).
Then feed them narcoberries to keep them under, and some normal food to actually tame them. Different creatures like different things. Different berries for herbivores, meat for carnivores.

Watched a few vids. Are characters server bound or universal?

Server bound. But when you reach 45 you can tame a pterodactyl and fly to the ark to get an obelisk or something and with that you can transfer between servers. Even singleplayer.
its pretty vague no one knows exactly how.

the config files on unreal engines have been great with performance gains if tweaked you should try if you are having fps issues in ARK , a fair bit of the performance actually seems to be to do with mouse control as well.

Can't you just push the button in the ark platform? The same one that's used to summon big monsters. There's an option to upload your character and pets there.

Devs are looking into optimization. They said they focused on gameplay features thus far and they haven't even started any optimization work at all. There is hope, to say the least...
IMO it's a fun game, even on 19 fps (1080p, medium).
It seems very unbalanced. As a lv 5 you an kill a lv 18 dodo in 3-4 hits but you can't kill a lv 2 turtle-thingy without ranged weapons. PK's are getting on my nerves as well. Shout "I'm friendly" all you want, they just run you over with 4-5 people, shooting their sling shots and stabbing you with spears just to steal some of the few berries you are carrying... As if the world itself wasn't hard enough to survive in, you get steam rolled any chance they get...
I'm one of those people who finds a pack of dodos, collects 20 meat to make a camp fire and to feed all the level 1's passing by.
Either way, I died at least 5-7 times yesterday during a 2 hour game. It sucks having to restart and having to start building all the tools and clothes again, it's hard to get to the point were fighting/defending becomes feasible but at least you keep the EP and the unlocked schematics (whatever they are called).
With all the griefers, which is normal for a survival game I have to admit, I guess you do have to find some people to play with. Maybe it gets somewhat different once you start crafting a house with respawn point and storage? I don't know, haven't gotten to that point yet....
Either way, I'm enjoying the game albeit its performance problems. Looking for humpers to form a tribe! I'm also willing to host a dedicated server [Germany, 100/100mbit, 24/7] if we get enough players together. Anyone interested?

New to survival games? (Regarding PlayerKilling)
PK is constant in all of these survival games, as there is no penalty for it in any way, only chance for loot
And if you build your character to have a lot of +melee damage, they'll punch you down in seconds. Especially if you don't upgrade fortitude level of the character (increases resistance against knockouts)
About killing turtles... you can kill them early if you're careful. Just punch them in face they'll get knocked out quite fast.
Or find the 1st mount dino... Pila/pilo something (half pig half anteater ) I've managed to punch those down quite easily and you can tame them and build them into awesome tanks. They get 60 hp for each health upgrade and if you put a saddle on them they can tank like crazy.
Regarding sheltering up... it's not that easy The thatch house is WEAK. I could get through the doors in around 30 seconds with just a hatchet. And then the bed is destroyed really fast. Wooden houses are already a lot more durable.
Best thing to do early is to just level up. learn the schematics (if you play alone this is painful, as you can't split the needed schematics to different people. Ie one makes clothes, another weapons, one the building stuff etc.
The performance is quite bad indeed.
With my machine, I cannot play it on high perfectly (on the sig) it runs very well at times but then, if I happen to look at wrong direction, the fps drops to single digits for a while.
On epic I get around 20-30 fps, but did not try combat or anything as it was not really enjoyable.

Early Access Survival Game #3,274 released in an unplayable state by a no-name amateur developer promising the moon? You don't say?!?!
Sorry, but if people haven't learned their lesson by now with regards to this kinda stuff, they deserve everything they're getting with this, and more (or less, if you prefer).

Oh, I wasn't picking on you specifically - just the general, seemingly somehow surprised consensus, that performance was crap. Check out the Steam forums for some great laughs on this, as well as the equally disturbing "it's Alpha guys, 25 fps is just fine!" posts.
People either just never learn, or are gluttons for punishment like you wouldn't believe heh.

If you're playing SP, delete your local profile. My FPS doubled after doing that.

So how much do you miss out on when playing alone? I want to try it, but it seems VERY generic from my point of view. Same as every other game like this, just with dinosaurs and not zombies etc. I bet when i download this and enter the game, all i can do is build some stuff, tame a dinosaur and walk around with my fingers in my ass with nothing to do.

lol what are you all doing to make the game look like crap and have shitty fps and such
been playing non stop for last few days now, performance never below 30fps, and uncapping it in files I get up to 45 fps. Needs sorting sure but its not unplayable at all. If the game is running smooth and fine why worry about the 60fps mark in a 5 day old game release thats only been in development for 7mnths.. :O
Such great fun so far. fucking slider for scale sausje at 50% lmao and that fucking resolution setting you got, wtf!!!

I do hope the fps stays the same when you increase settings back to normal resolution. I keep hearing it's pretty much limited to around 30, so no matter how low you put it, it won't really go over unless you edit some ini file.

Mmh, overall I like the game. It still has the new game smell to it and I have not yet detected any cheaters.
However, I'm afraid the official servers will eventually give in to people who complain it's too difficult to do anything. Ie. currently in the end game you can make guns and modern weapons just fine... but the ammunition requires a lot of resources.
I can make a pistol / rifle after maybe 20 minutes of gathering + another 20 of refining the resources (could parallelize the refining process but I'm lazy), but with same amount of gathering + refining, I could get maybe 20 ammunition or less.
I'm afraid it'll eventually go so that you'll make 100s of ammunition with few metal scraps and can run around with assaultrifle on autofire
There are also a lot of cheesy ways to level up currently (Which I also use after me and my friends restarted on EU server)
Ie. crafting 'notes' in the beginning. Takes 3 thatch and 1 fiber. -> 1 experience. You'll get maybe 6-15 thatch / tree and 2 - 18 fiber / plant -> free exp very very fast, + you only 'waste' 3 engrams to learn the notes.
We grinded to level 25 in the first few hours and then started playing properly.
Built a massive wooden gated camp in one of the starter areas. We have a private lake and everything
tldr; I like dinos.
